Communion
On Sunday, November 15th we will be distributing Holy Communion to people who are unable to attend Mass. This
will be done in 5 minute increments and will begin at Noon, after the 11:00 am Mass has ended. To reserve your time slot, please email Darlene in the office at [email protected] or call her at (509) 358-4290 ext. 3#.
There are elements of the afterlife that have suffered some PR problems since the Second Vatican Council. Everyone today seems to accept Heaven as the wonderful place everyone goes after death – even fluffy the cat. Heaven is very popular and evidently very full. However, Heaven’s cousins (Hell and Purgatory) haven’t fared as well. Hell may exist, but no one is there and Purgatory was made up in the middle ages and probably doesn’t exist at all. Mistaken Catholics and others unfortunately perpetuate these beliefs in the afterlife.
These opinions are unfortunate precisely because they contradict God’s revelation as found in scripture and tradition. This becomes all the more important for us during the month of November when we remember the dead and pray for the souls in Purgatory. Purgatory makes perfect sense to me. We cannot enter into the glory of heaven with any hint of sinful inclinations. Its like wearing muddy shoes into the living room – they need to be taken off or cleaned first. Its also like surgery to remove a diseased tumor so that we can be whole again. Our loved ones are in the waiting room praying for a successful surgery. The same is true for us. We are in the “waiting room” of earth praying for our loved ones who have gone before us. They are in a state of purification while preparing to enter into the glory of Heaven. This state is beyond time, space, and the comprehension of our feeble minds, but Purgatory exists nonetheless. Vigil candles will be sold at Masses this weekend which will be lit and placed on the Cathedral steps for All Souls Day. On Monday, November 2nd, I will offer the All Souls Mass at 12 Noon. At 5:15 p.m. that day, I will offer the Holy Rosary on the steps of the Cathedral for all the dead. Please plan on attending this important event at which we will remember our loves ones who have died. We will honor them and pray for the repose of their souls. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Darrin Connall, VG Rector

Souls being released from Purgatory
First Friday
This Friday, November 6th, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners for this Mass!.
There should always be at least two people in the Cathedral at all times during Adoration. If you would like to volunteer to be present at this time, please call Debbie at (509) 808-9946.

SNAP is recruiting volunteers for a new program called Neighbors on the Go. SNAP’s Neighbors on the Go program is designed to serve Spokane County residents 65+ years of age and/or persons living with disabilities, who otherwise would not qualify or be able to utilize public transportation options. Riders are able to request rides for medical related transportation needs such as attending an appointment with a Primary Care Physician or picking up a prescription at their local pharmacy. SNAP is looking for exceptional individuals in the Spokane area to commit to improving medical access to the most vulnerable members of our community by volunteering to be a driver. Follow this link to find out more about being a volunteer driver for Neighbors on the Go! https://www.snapwa.org/neighbors-on-the-go-i-want-to-be-a-driver/ If you have any additional questions about the program feel free to email Garrett at [email protected].

Virtual Liturgical Minister Workshop
“Presence and Participation in Time of Pandemic: How Christ’s Personal Presence Enables Participation at Mass”
Presentation by Fr. Michael Witczak
The bishops at the Second Vatican Council taught that Christ is present in the liturgy in various ways (most importantly in the Eucharistic species, in the person of the priest, in the word proclaimed, and “where two or three are gathered together in my name.” When we participate in the liturgy as members of Christ’s body, we deepen his presence in ourselves, in the Church, and in the world. How can we overcome the imposed pandemic social distancing to fully engage Christ in the liturgy?
Fr. Michael Witczak was ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in 1977. He earned the Doctorate in Sacred Liturgy at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome and taught at St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee. Since 2007 he has been on the faculty of liturgical studies and sacramental theology at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
Breakouts will follow for Lectors, Sacristans, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Adult Altar Servers and Server Trainers, and Musicians, on your role within the liturgy. Sessions will be recorded so you if serve in more than one ministry, you may go back and watch another ministry breakout after the workshop.
