STEEL TANKS

PART 1: GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. The selection of factory-coated welded steel tank

construction for this facility is based upon the design

drawings and this specification. Deviations from thespecified design are not permitted.

B. Drawings and Specifications

1. Supply and install steel tanks at the location shown

on the drawings and as specified herein.

2. Shop drawings shall be submitted for approval as

specified elsewhere.

C. Qualifications of Tank manufacturer

1. The Tank manufacturer shall be a specialist in the

design, fabrication, and erection of factory-coated

welded steel tanks. The manufacturer shall bequality certified, have an active American

Petroleum Institute (API-QI) and an International

Organization for Standardization (ISO 9001)registration.

D. Processing pipe, instrumentation, and controls is included

as part of the steel tank installation. The tank contractor is

responsible for installation of these systems in accordancewith manufacturer’s specifications.

E. Design Criteria

Product to be Stored: Water incident to site runoff,

dewatering, and decontaminationactivities.

Specific Gravity: 1.0

 pH of Product: 6.7 to 7.8Temperature of Product: Ambient

PART 2: PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Tank Structure

The materials, design, fabrication, and erection of thewelded steel tank shall conform to the standards of industry

from the American Petroleum Institute, which are derived

from Engineering principles, industry experiences, and

standards and specifications.

1. Steel

a. Sheet. Steel sheets shall conform to or shall be at

least equal to hot-rolled quality per ASTM

A36M/A36 with a minimum yield strength of36,000 psi.

 b. Plate. Steel plates shall conform to or at least beequal to the requirements of ASTM A36M/A 36,

with minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi.

c. Rolled Structural Shapes. Rolled structural shapesshall conform to ASTM A36.

2. Bolts

a. Bolts shall conform to or at least be equal to the

latest revision of ASTM A307 or A 193M/A 193.

 b. Fastener bolts in flanges and structural steel

members shall be friction type, A325.

3. Welding Electrodes

a. Manual arc-welding electrodes, for weldingmaterials with a minimum tensile strength less than

550 MPa (80 ksi), shall conform to the E60 and E70

classification series in AWS A5.1 and shall conformto the E8015-B8 classification series in AWS A5.5.

 b.  Welding materials with a minimum tensile strength

of 550 through 585 MPa (80 through 85 ksi), the

manual arc-welding electrodes shall conform to theE8015-B8 classification series in AWS A5.5.

c. Inspections of joints shall be either radiographic or

ultrasonic methods as described in API 650, Section

6 – Methods of Inspecting Joints.

4. Joints

a. All welded joints shall conform to API 650, Section

3 – Design.

5. Coating

a. All metal plates, supports, members, andmiscellaneous parts, except bolts, certainaccessories, and appurtenances, shall be factory

coated in accordance with the provisions of these

specifications. Field coating, is required for weldsand to repair damage caused by welding.

Interior: Thermally cured epoxy Epicon 925, or

equal.

Exterior: Amine Epoxy primer with baked acrylic

finish coat or equal.

2.2 ACCEPTED TANK SUPPLIER

The steel tank and accessories furnished under this section shall besupplied by Pasadena Tank Corporation, 1591 Jacinto Port

Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77015 (281-457-3996), or approved

alternate.

g. Liquid Level Indicator. Install a liquid level

indicator with stainless steel float and target board as detailed on the drawings and as

specified by the tank manufacturer.

h. Internal Nozzle with Overflow Weir Cone.The internal nozzle with overflow weir shallconform to the size and location specified on

the drawings.

i. Flush Cleanout Door. The flush cleanoutdoor (shell manway) shall conform to the

sizes and location specified on the drawings.

 j. Processing pipe, instrumentation, and

controls is included as part of the steel tankinstallation. The tank contractor is

responsible for installation of these systemsin accordance with manufacturer’sspecifications.

D. Tank Foundation

1. The tank foundation is specified elsewhere.

2. Steel Bottom Tanks. The foundation shall be

installed per API 650.

3. The foundations shall be level with differential notexceeding +/- 1/8 inch in any 30-foot circumference

under the shell. The grade on the circumference

shall not vary more than +/- ¼ inch from anestablished plane.

4. Concrete used for foundations shall be 4000 psi

compressive strength (Type I Portland Cement).

5. Soil reports are required for foundation designs.

E. Shipping

1. Package all plates, supports, members, andmiscellaneous parts for shipment in such manner to

 prevent abrasion or scratching of the finished

coating.
