AN INSIDE LOOK

ACMEAbout ACMEEstabl ished in 1985 in Taiwan, ACME is a leading manufacturer of entertainment and stage l ight ing f ixtures. The company puts the development of scient i f ic and technological innovat ion as i ts pr ior i ty ( in accordance with i ts customers’ design requirements) and commits i tsel f to the manufactur ing of advanced but safe, energy-eff ic ient l ight ing f ixtures and sound systems.

The current management is made up of a young team – spearheaded by ACME’s President Mr Leon Huang – with a strong focus on social media market ing and a branding strategy that not only focuses on product innovat ion but customer service as wel l . The team is also working towards expanding i ts presence across the market worldwide.

LAVA magazine was recently invited to visit the ACME factory in Foshan City, Guangzhou, China.

The TourI t was on 26 February that LAVA went on an hour-long tr ip from Guangzhou to the city of Foshan for a comprehensive tour of ACME’s factory. Bui l t in 2011, the factory covers 100,000 square meters of land and, according to ACME, is one of the largest factor ies for manufactur ing/producing entertainment and stage l ight ing f ixtures in Asia. This is where the company is now off ic ia l ly stat ioned.

The sprawl ing faci l i ty consists of four dormitory bui ldings, two hardware bui ldings, an assembl ing bui lding, a PCBA bui lding, and a management (administrat ion) bui lding.

ACME’s state-of-the-art manufactur ing plant boasts a wide range of advanced automatic and semi-automatic solut ions, including SMT placement equipment, SALVAGNINi LIXE CNC laser machines, TAIWAN Tai l i f t CNC punch press machines, England Taylor welding machines and more.

By invest ing in such high-tech machinery, ACME is able to produce qual i ty products that meet the requirements

of i ts cl ients. To further ensure the qual i ty of al l i ts l ight ing products, the ent ire manufactur ing process undergoes cont inual qual i ty and eff ic iency controls. ACME has ISO9001:2008 and QC080000 (RoHS) cert i f icat ions. Further more, al l ACME products are CE compl iant.

On to the tour: after a quick lunch with a few fr iendly ACME employees, including the designated “tour guide” and market ing head of the company, Carol Chiu, we headed out to recce the vic ini ty. What was easy to not ice upon arr ival was the expansiveness and cleanl iness of the area. Another interest ing observat ion was the presence of a large green f ie ld si tuated r ight next to the factory bui ldings, with locals digging and ploughing at the ground. I t fe l t very much l ike a farm.

Walking past the dormitory bui ldings, we not iced a basketbal l court, with a large gather ing of ACME’s employees playing a game. Carol informed us that there was up to 1,000 factory workers residing in the dormitory, which was also equipped with a modest-looking grocery store, a shared entertainment lounge, a gym, as wel l as a chi ldcare centre.

Show RoomOne of the more impressive highl ights of the tour would have to be the factory’s l ight ing show room, which ACME’s engineers use to test out and run i ts wide range of equipment in an environment simi lar to entertainment and concert venues.

Upon enter ing the room, we not iced a giant truss set up with an array of ACME’s l ight ing f ixtures instal led, one of which was cal led the Spider ser ies, due to i ts two movement heads that contained 8W quad-colour LEDs to del iver long throw mult i-beam effects in var ious colours.

We were treated to a v isual ly arrest ing l ight ing demonstrat ion – an impressive showcase of ACME’s investment in manufactur ing innovat ive entertainment l ight ing products of rel iable qual i ty.

Production & AssemblyThe next part of the tour was al l about the assembl ing of ACME’s products and parts, which was done both by hand and by automation.

One of the rooms we entered was the sect ion in which var ious parts of the l ight ing f ixtures were put together. There was row upon row of product l ines where factory workers performed smal l , metal parts assembl ing and dr i l l ing. Each employee workstat ion came equipped with a display monitor, which would provide the worker with instruct ions.

In a separate sect ion cal led the Burning Room for Finished Products, which was l ined with several rows of ACME’s completed l ight ing f ixtures, workers were also test ing each product and checking for discrepancies and faults. The room l i t up in f lashes of red, yel low and green as workers cont inual ly ran “burn-ins”.

We also ventured into other rooms, including the area for solder ing of pr inted circuit boards (PCBs) and the SMT (or Surface Mount Technology) Workshop, which housed several s izeable machines for the placement of surface-mount devices – l ike the JUKI KE-2080M Flexible Mounter. This machine achieves high-speed placement by laser s ight ing from reels that are slotted into receptacles at the front.

The area was div ided into two sect ions: architectural and entertainment l ight ing. Al l employees inside were wearing special ly designed coats and hats for safety and to prevent contaminat ion. I t was also worth not ing that the ent ire area was incredibly spacious and spot less, meaning there was a lot of room for the workers to roam.

Research & Development (R&D) We then vis i ted the much quieter R&D div is ion. i t was an off ice space with a number of ACME’s R&D designers si t t ing at their workstat ions.

I t has to be noted that ACME places a lot of importance in researching and developing al l of i ts products; the brand’s R&D efforts are concentrated on i ts current projects. This is a key element in the company’s overal l business strategy.

“R&D has been the cornerstone of ACME for over a decade. We have approximately 150 technicians working across our global business and headquarter research centres at the intersect ion of technology and industry to solve product problems and enhance future products,” Carol explained.

MetalworkThe last stop of our tour was located in a separate warehouse, and i t was here that we had the opportunity to see the faci l i ty’s large and complex machinery, including the SALVAGNINi LIXE f iber laser cutter, which accurately cuts var ious metals through the use of a laser source with a f iber resonator, and the Tai l i f t punch press.

There was also a smal ler sect ion in the warehouse cal led the Paint ing Room where certain parts are lacquered and painted. Quite expectedly, there was a strong smel l of glue in the room.

This part of the factory was quite impressive and showed that ACME is committed to doing much of the manufactur ing and product ion work in-house. I t was where much of the heavy work takes place, as can be seen from the number of men and women who operated al l of these big machines cutt ing, bending and punching metal.

LAVA magazine also spoke with the current management team at ACME to find out more about the company and where it intends to go within the industry.

Leon Huang, President of ACME:

Tell us more about ACME. What are its goals and objectives with regard to the entertainment l ighting industry?

Goal: To be able to move forward and face chal lenges with a posit ive att i tude and to cont inual ly incorporate innovat ion in the manufactur ing of our products, which is a part of ACME’s phi losophy.

Object ive: Innovat ion is key in dr iv ing the growth of the economy. Therefore, ACME is wi l l ing to work together with other enterpr ises to improve China’s abi l i ty to produce innovat ive qual i ty products for the industry!

How wil l ACME continue to build its brand?

ACME wi l l cont inue i ts emphasis on product innovat ion, the use of state-of-the-art technology and qual i ty processes to ensure that our products are f lexible, var ied and capable of showing mult iple l ight ing effects. ACME’s integrat ion of science and technology into l ight ing effects has made waves in the entertainment l ight ing industry.

Current ly, ACME is undergoing a consol idat ion phase where we wi l l combine components of entertainment l ight ing, professional l ight ing, consoles, stereo systems and ampl i f iers into one complete and cohesive solut ion. This wi l l help with ACME’s cost-management and maximise our resources. Hopeful ly, this would cement ACME as a one-stop solut ions provider for professionals in the industry. This wi l l be benef ic ia l for potent ia l buyers as i t saves them t ime, money and would ease after-sales support. ACME wi l l a lso bui ld a sol id service network that wi l l cater to the specif ic needs of our customers.

Kevin Chung, Head of Sales:

How do you think ACME’s products stand out from its competit ion? What do you think are ACME’s strengths?

There are 3 main strengths:

Product rel iabi l i ty, durabi l i ty and serviceabi l i ty: The market v iews the performance of product consistency or service in a broad manner. Durabi l i ty refers to the l i fespan of the product; serviceabi l i ty refers to the ease of servic ing the product i f i t needs help. This percept ion of ACME’s product performance is impacted by factors such as speed, accuracy and care of product del ivery and instal lat ion, the promptness, courtesy and helpfulness of customer service, as wel l as improving the qual i ty of repair services, the t ime involved and so on.

Design: The market is also concerned with a product that goes beyond i ts funct ional aspects into more aesthet ic considerat ions, such as i ts s ize, shape, mater ia ls and colour. ACME wi l l cont inual ly make improvements in this regard based on market feedback.

Competit ive pr ic ing: The pr ic ing strategy adopted by ACME can dictate how consumers wi l l categorise the

pr ice of the brand and how f i rm or f lexible that pr ice is perceived to be.

Carol Chiu, Head of Marketing:

Tell us more about ACME’s marketing strategy.

Market ing is obviously necessary to push the product into the publ ic eye and attract as many customers as possible. There are numerous ways to promote a product or service.

ACME’s market ing strategy consists of many di fferent aspects, such as ads, sales incent ives, co-op funds, brand promotional gi f ts, customer appreciat ion events. We are also working hard to enhance our social media presence; this is key in rais ing ACME’s brand, products and services. A strong set of promotional strategies can help posit ion ACME in a favourable l ight with current customers as wel l as new ones.

Malaysia’s Iskandar Investment began construction of a 21.5-acre Sports Complex in February 2010, which forms part of the development of an integrated education hub housing universit ies and institutes of higher education, academia industry action and R&D centres, as well as student accommodations.

The sports complex has a seating capacity of 14,000 and wil l house sporting faci l i t ies catering to students and staff of EduCity Iskandar as well as Nusajaya’s community.

The EduCity Stadium & Sports Complex comprises a world-class footbal l cum rugby f ield, a 400-metre athletic track, an aquatic centre complete with Olympic-size swimming and diving pool, and an Indoor Arena with mult i-courts for badminton, basketbal l and futsal. Other recreational options include outdoor courts for tennis, vol leybal l and futsal.

The ult imate goal is to provide a world-class infrastructure that would be able to host various sporting events; in order to achieve this, the developers had to look out for a suitable l ighting solution.

One main chal lenge in sett ing up the r ight l ighting system at the faci l i ty was the fact that each individual sport had precise l ighting requirements to be met

( l ighting levels, uniformit ies, etc.). Aside from specif ic sport requirements, the l ighting also had to offer excel lent colour rendit ion and glare control with minimum spil l l ight to avoid l ight pol lution.

In the footbal l stadium, a r ight balance had to be achieved with l ighting from high masts on one side and the curved stadium roof structure on the other. Hence, special attention to detai l and other considerations had to be taken into account for the choice of l ighting, depending on the type of sport being played in addit ion to their specif ic l ighting and physical requirements.

Taking into account the technical requirements for stadium l ighting, the Phil ips team suggested the use of ArenaVision for the footbal l and indoor stadium, OptiVision for the indoor Stadium, ConTempo and Landmark for the swimming stadium.

The luminaires were careful ly chosen to achieve the desired atmosphere, not only for the players, but also to the spectators, off icials and other stakeholders. The right combination of Phi l ips l ighting solutions used in the stadiums was able to offer good visibi l i ty, excel lent visual comfort and minimum glare.

The l ighting solutions offered an excel lent l ighting quality, which improved the performance of the players and offered exceptional viewing experience. Adequate l ighting levels, good uniformity and freedom from glare were achieved as it was designed with the well-being of players, off icials and spectators in mind.

The set up of the l ighting system was well-received. Muhammad Suhail i Azid, Assistant Vice President of EDUCITY Development, said: “The new l ighting solutions have fulf i l led our expectations of providing a world-class sports complex with a favourable sporting environment, be it day or night, for both competit ive and recreational sporting events.”

Estádio do Maracanã – Rio de Janeiro

The WSDG team in Brazi l a lso coordinated further audio and v ideo upgrades for Brazi l ’s largest sports venue: the Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro.

WSDG’s purv iew covered the sound system for a l l spaces, including the play ing f ie ld, audience, as wel l as internal spaces, such as VIP rooms, access, and off ices; v ideo systems, including two large LED video wal ls and more than 400 v ideo displays a l l around the stadium; and audio- and v ideo-control rooms. The electro-acoust ical design was done using s imulat ion software.

The biggest chal lenge dur ing the design phase was to def ine the f inal quant i t ies and locat ion of the PA cluster, to achieve the required speech-transmission index (STI ) and sound-pressure level (SPL) coverage as required by FIFA, according to Cipr iano.

“We ident i f ied extensive sound ref lect ions throughout the arena and concluded that acoust ical absorpt ion needed to be insta l led at the inner r ing of the audience sector to achieve the required STI values, as given to us by FIFA,” Cipr iano expla ined, indicat ing those values as .5 STI (STI values range from 0 to 1) at 110 dB peak SPL. “Speaker posit ioning was def ined for the internal and external areas and for numerous zoning maps, which can now be indiv idual ly control led for increased f lex ib i l i ty and secur i ty purposes.”

The designers had or ig inal ly speci f ied Community Sound PA l ine-array components, but an Electro-Voice PA l ine array was eventual ly insta l led. Cipr iano noted that the system met a l l the cr i ter ia establ ished by the design and model ing process.

Other chal lenges included the changing architecture of the stadium, part icular ly the new roof. “The locat ion of the c lusters had to change to accommodate the catwalk for the roof, and, in turn, we had to th ink about how the posit ion of the speakers affected the l ight ing,” he expla ined. “We had to run and then rerun a lot of s imulat ions.”

An Al len & Heath GLD mixer has also been insta l led in the stadium. The GLD-80 is f i t ted with a Dante network card and controls audio distr ibut ion around the ent i re stadium through f ibre opt ic cables.

“The main reason we chose GLD was because of Al len & Heath’s fantast ic sound qual i ty, re l iabi l i ty and ease of use,” said Augusto Bergamim, Sound Manager and System Programmer at the Maracanã. ■

Epson, the world’s top projector maker for 13 years, transported audiences into a mult i-media l i terary world with a dazzl ing display of l ight and dance, as part of the Singapore Arts House 10th Anniversary celebrations. As the off icial Projector Partner for the Arts House’s 10th Anniversary programmes, an outdoor mult imedia projection showcase was held as part of the anchor show The Next Page.

The showcase featured projections on the façade of the Arts House bui lding while theatrical talents recited l ines from l iterary novels and authors to commemorate the occasion.

The outdoor mult imedia projection show was developed in col laboration with CAKE Theatrical Productions, a contemporary theatre company in Singapore, and local mult imedia art ist Brian Gothong Tan, known for his cutt ing-edge and highly engaging works in theatre, f i lm and instal lat ion art.

The projections were special ly developed to work seamlessly with the performance, creating an extraordinary experience for the audience as the whole Arts House façade transformed, transporting everyone into an alternative l i terary world. The result was an immersive integration of visual imagery and dance, backed by 16 Epson high-lumens commercial projectors.

No major project is without its diff icult ies and this particular projection showcase was no different. Brian, the mult imedia art ist behind it, noted that it was a chal lenge to work within the small outdoor area, as well as the different façade depths of the Arts House.

He explained: “Due to the space l imitation and different depths, we have to careful ly determine the location to place each projector, as well as the type of lens used for the façade mapping process. In terms of technical capabil i t ies, Epson helped to determine suitable high-lumens 3LCD projectors for the project, and roped in their partner, Active Visual, to assist in wet weather provisions. We were therefore confident that the show would go on to amaze the viewers – rain or shine.”

It also helped that Brian was famil iar with Epson’s technology, having worked with Singapore’s number one projector brand (2012-2013) before. “I am famil iar with Epson’s projectors and technology, having col laborated with them on outdoor and large-scale projections, such as Al iwal Arts Centre’s Arts Night Crawl and I l logic play held in 2013. Based on my past col laboration experiences with Epson, I was confident that Epson projectors had the capabil i ty and technology to ensure that this large-scale and complicated project went smoothly. That was why I col laborated with Epson again on this signif icant national project.

A lot of planning was required, and we had a very t ight t imeline of less than a month. So speed was of the essence. We worked closely to cal ibrate the projectors and ensure that sharp vibrant projections can be enjoyed from al l angles. Fortunately, the teams have worked together previously, and we knew exactly what to expect. From identifying the type of projectors to the sheer number of projectors needed, we worked closely with the Epson team and the Arts House to jointly del iver the desired effects outdoors.”

At the same time, the show was in l ine with Epson’s twin efforts to chal lenge tradit ional boundaries with the latest technology and support Singapore’s arts and design scenes. Projectors used range from 8,000 – 10,000 lumens, including the EB-Z10000, Epson’s f irst ultra-bright 10,000 lumens projectors, as well as the EB-Z8150, EB-Z8450WU and EB-Z8350W. In addit ion to equipment loan, Epson worked closely with the partners behind-the-scenes to cal ibrate the projections for the surfaces, as well as to changing weather condit ions.

“Façade projections in the Singapore arts scene are a r ising trend and they are very well-received by Singaporeans,” said Wil l iam Phuan, Director of The Arts House. “Epson is renowned for its projection technology and has been very supportive of the arts. They have worked closely with our operations team and the art ists to perfect the projections on our façade. The use of technology offers audiences a new and novel experience for them to interact with the arts, and we hope that this mult imedia l ight instal lat ion wil l engage and excite the Singapore audiences in l i terature by presenting this genre in new l ight.”

Joujou-Ours by Uno Lai To Light Up Our Memories Most people would remember owning and playing with toy bears at one point in their l ives, hence the image of a toy bear remains a memory close to their hearts. Rekindl ing this memory, the Joujou-Ours l ight art instal lat ion comprised of giant toy bear heads l i t up using energy-eff icient LED l ights.

Joujou-Ours means “toy bears” in French. Each toy bear had its own personality, not just through the colour and effect of their l ights, but also through accents and accessories, such as hats, glasses and moustaches. Different toy bears displayed unique l ighting effects, and reacted to motion and touch through the use of motion sensors. Walking closer to different bears would tr igger l ighting effects, while touching their heads would tr igger alternate l ighting effects. With the help of Traxon Dot XL and e:cue Butler XT solutions, Uno Bear created a dynamic experience that was both nostalgic and heart-warming for visitors.

Uno Lai Design Group owner, Uno Lai, said: “We are honoured to be a part of i Light Marina Bay 2014. As a company that bel ieves in the power of good design, we support the festival’s message of sustainabil i ty through intel l igent and innovative l ighting designs. We are glad to have the opportunity to share our perspective on l ighting innovation, and Joujou-Ours is our take on how l ights can evoke emotion and warmth amongst people. The use of Traxon’s LED l ighting solutions within Joujou-Ours have helped us convey this message on a deeper level.”

Bedazzled by Meinhardt Light Studio – Starry Starry NightsThe sight of thousands of vividly sparkl ing stars in the night sky is something almost impossible to witness for people l iv ing in densely-populated cit ies l ike Singapore, as a result of the presence of bright l ights emitted from buildings. Bedazzled aimed to bring people closer to the natural starry night sky that has been gradually lost due to l ight pol lution. Visitors were able to experience the wonder of being under a blanket of stars against a dark sky that also featured animated constel lat ions.

To re-create the starry night sky, two large umbrel las were equipped with Traxon Dot XL and String RGB system to form a bedazzl ing RGB LED screen that i l luminated twelve animated constel lat ions. For pre-programmed effects of the individual star signs, e:cue Butler XT2 and Butler S2 were combined and connected via a network switch to provide DMX control signals to the RGB LED screen. This resulted in a visual ly-arresting display of twinkl ing l ights – a simple, yet creative, way of mimicking nature’s beauty.

i Light Marina Bay 2014Besides l ight art instal lat ions, visitors to i Light Marina Bay 2014 also enjoyed an array of complementary events, public programmes and fun activit ies that were l ined up over the four weekends. These included free guided tours, outdoor movie screenings and entertaining performances, outdoor food spaces, educational talks and workshops, and created for visitors a dazzl ing, diverse and enriching experience.

Throughout the month of March, visitors at the Singapore ArtScience Museum were treated to a beautiful visual display of pop-art, entit led Celebration of Life, as part of the i Light Marina Bay 2014 event – Asia’s only sustainable l ight art festival. Singaporean art ist, Justin Lee, col laborated with Marina Bay Sands and Panasonic Systems Asia Pacif ic to bring this 3D projection-mapping showcase to l i fe.

The instal lat ion was a playful, tongue-in-cheek commentary on the role and values of tradit ional Asian culture in contemporary society. Through the use of pop-art as a playful medium, this instal lat ion was a celebration of Asian values in the context of a modern society. In this 3D projection showcase for the ArtScience Museum, Justin playful ly blended tradit ional Eastern iconography with modern-day symbols of our global capital ist culture. This approach suggested cultural resi l ience – the abi l i ty of Asian culture to survive, to withstand, to endure and to adapt to the changing ways of contemporary society.

“Singapore is a young nation that has a blend of Eastern and Western culture – sort of l ike a marriage,” explained Justin, who has been an art ist for the past 12 to 13 years. “This embodiment forms much of the inspiration behind my art. So I think my work is suited for this project because it involves our country and its culture – from the way we talk to the way we dress. I think it’s good to play a part in this celebration of l i fe.

This is also a chal lenge for me as an art ist because this would be the f irst t ime I’m using my motifs and icons and transforming them into moving images. It helps to extend my body of work to another level.”

Anyone who has ever seen the ArtScience Museum would know of how unusual this bui lding is – its façade has a unique shape fashioned after lotus petals. In addit ion, the Marina Bay is located directly in front of it. These two factors posed quite a chal lenge for the creative team because both the shape and location of the museum somewhat l imited the space for projector instal lat ion. The instal lers had to f igure out how and where to place the projectors in order to ensure optimal projection onto the museum’s unusual façade.

Such a chal lenging requirement meant the technical/system engineers from Dorier Asia Pacif ic Pte Ltd had to use the strongest possible projectors to ensure the moving images projected were clean, crisp and accurate – in came Panasonic’s PT-DZ21K 3-Chip DLPTM f lagship projectors. Boasting a brightness of 20,000 lumens, the PT-DZ21K ensured high brightness and picture qual ity, while also enabling a host of creative capabil i t ies for the project organisers. In addit ion, the wide range of avai lable lenses al lowed the PT-DZ21K to project over a variety of distances, which was ideal for this instal lat ion considering the museum’s location – r ight next to the bay – and unusual shape.

There were 16 projectors in total, which were grouped and strategical ly placed in three specif ic locations so as to project the moving images perfectly onto each of the three odd-shaped petals that were used in the instal lat ion. Seven of the projectors were mounted on the other side of the Marina Bay to enable long-distance projection across the body of water.

“This projector is l ight-eff icient and consists of a unique quad-lamp system, which results in lower power consumption and longer l i fespan,” explained Hirotatsu Asai, Manager of the Professional Audio Video Department at Panasonic. And it was this l ight-eff icient qual ity, he continued, that proved suitable for the theme of the i Light Marina Bay 2014 festival, which cal led for sustainable l ight art instal lat ions.

Another technical feature to this projector is its abi l i ty to project images in portrait mode. Typical projections are often on a landscape orientation, but this was not the case for the instal lat ion as the petals of the museum are long. This particular function was one of the reasons the PT-DZ21K was chosen for this project as it made it possible to cover the entire area of each petal. Prior to the off icial launch of the instal lat ion, the technical/system engineers had to acquire the layout of the museum from Marina Bay Sands and perform grid al ignment work by using lasers to project onto the museum’s outer surface. This was to al low them to better estimate the curvature of the façade. It was then that they could decide how many projectors were required and where to place them to ensure good quality images and high brightness. For this showcase, Panasonic also used
