This year we have welcomed two new teachers into the TAS Faculty. John Kama is job sharing with Kylie Parker in Agriculture and Timothy Roberts is our new Timber/Design and Technology Teacher. Both teachers are enjoying teaching at Canowindra High School and have already developed strong student/teacher relationships with their students.

Year 7 and 8 Technology (Mandatory) Rotations

All students in Year 7 and 8 completed the core unit in Technology (Mandatory) at the beginning of this term. Students have learnt how to use the design process to meet people’s needs and wants. Year 7, have developed a title page for their core unit and have used statistics and graphs to determine which title page their peers liked best. Year 8 have used the design process to develop an Application Software Tool, known as an App. Students have developed some very creative ideas for apps aimed at teenagers and produced outstanding logos to help promote their products. Year 7 and 8 have now commenced their rotations for 2018. Year 7 will be rotating through Timber, Technology Ready, Textiles and Metal this year, doing one subject per term. Year 8 will be rotating through Agriculture, STEM, Food Technology and Electronics. This gives students the ability to try each of these subject areas before choosing their electives for Stage 5 towards the end of Year 8. The STEM class is using the Lego robots in the school and learning how to use coding to program the robots to perform simple functions such as moving forwards, backwards, turning 180 degrees, turning 360 degrees, turning right and turning left. Students will be set challenging obstacle courses over the term and taught how

to program the robots to complete the courses. Students will then start looking at the sensors and using them to measure distance of objects and light in a range of environments. STEM is built around project-based learning and involves teaching core content from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics syllabus.

Year 11 Hospitality The Year 11 Hospitality class have already been working on two units towards their VET qualification. They have been working on completing ‘Working effectively with others’ and ‘Use food preparation equipment’. In practical classes, students have been learning how to use each piece of equipment in the Commercial Kitchen safely and to clean it using the appropriate procedure. They have also been learning the precision cuts in class and need to practice their knife skills at home. The best way to achieve this is to ask the students to prepare your vegetables ready for you or your child to cook dinner. The more they practice, the better they become.

Thank you, to both the Year 11 Hospitality class and Year 8 Technology (Mandatory) Food class that have assisted with two catering functions that we have completed already this year. We have catered for the Year 7 Afternoon Tea and the Central West Secondary Principals Council in Canowindra. Well done to each of the students

Course Fees Just a reminder that all elective course fees are now overdue. The fees for elective courses are mandatory and were outlined in the Subject Selection booklets issued in 2017. Could you please ensure that all of these fees are paid as soon as possible? Classroom teachers will be reminding students in class this week if they have any fees still outstanding. Mrs Pickering, Head Teacher TAS

Year 12 Industry Visit On Thursday 8th March, Canowindra High School’s Year 12 Metals and Engineering students travelled to Hort Engineering in Orange for an Industry Visit. The Industry Visit is a mandatory part of the Industrial Technology – Metals course of study. The students were required to ask a series of questions related to the management structure of the industry through to the day-to-day running of the plant, and then compile the information into an Industry Study Report.

We arrived at 10:00am and started with a brief safety talk. After signing in, the Hort Engineering representatives decided to sit down and answer all of the student’s questions first. It took about one and a half hours of questioning but the students managed to acquire enough information to complete their report.

The next stage of the tour was an interesting walk through Hort Engineering’s production facilities, where the students had the opportunity to see how a real fabrication workshop runs. Although Hort’s were very busy on the day, the students received valuable insights into the production processes required of a heavy metals industry. The students were allowed to take as many

photos as they liked and these can be used to enhance their final report.

A special thank you goes to the management of Hort Engineering for allowing us to visit their facilities during such a busy time and especially to Mrs Lisa Besedic for driving some of the students. Mr Steve Wilson, IT-Metal Teacher

Principal’s News Congratulations to our Open Boys soccer team on their win against Grenfell last Friday. We look forward to hearing how they go in their next round later this term. This Friday our school will join hundreds of other schools across NSW in acknowledging the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. As in previous years we will be holding a mufti day with students being asked to wear orange in support of this very important day and message. During morning assembly throughout the week we will reinforce the message that bullying in any form is not okay in our school and on Friday we will ask all students to write their support of, and commitment to, “Bullying, no way”. We ask that you please discuss this important issue with your children and, if they are being bullied or know of someone being bullied, encourage them to report it so as the action can be taken and support offered. This Thursday is photo day, please don’t forget to bring your envelopes and money along - it is amazing the memories and stories an old school photo can create in years to come. Last week we reviewed the findings from the school self-assessment undertaken against the elements of the School

Excellence Framework in Learning, Teaching and Leading. Conducted earlier this term, it was pleasing to see that in most areas the school has shown improved performance with at least 90% of areas now identified to be “sustaining and growing”. The staff will now prioritise those areas requiring additional focus and include them in our annual school plan. The findings from this self-assessment will also be reported in our Annual School Report which is due for release at the end of the term. Congratulations goes to Alex Mitchell for being this week’s winner of our weekly merit draw.

Our School

BYOD POLICY - SUMMARY (A copy of the full document can be obtained from the school website)

Purpose The increasing availability of personal mobile devices has accelerated the demand for new models of learning. For our students the connection to their own personal mobile device is primarily for the purpose of developing 21st century learning skills and for fostering digital literacy, fluency and citizenship in a safe environment. The use of personal mobile devices at school will deepen learning, be personalised and student centred, and meet the expectations of teachers, students, parents and caregivers. Access to the school’s and the Department of Education network, including the internet, will be made available to students primarily for their learning activities where appropriate. The term personal device refers to any approved technology device brought into the school and owned by students.

Student Canowindra High School aims to promote educational excellence by facilitating resource collaboration, innovation and communication. The students are expected to use all digital tools, online services and digital resources in a responsible, ethical and legal manner, demonstrating respect for others and an appreciation of the right to learn of all students. When at school students will only use the “nswdet” wireless network, any other network used eg 3G/4G will be deemed inappropriate. Any action that disrupts, or is likely to disrupt, the learning Environment, or interfere with the operation of the School, is also deemed inappropriate.

Teacher Teachers will use a range of technologies to complement teaching and learning programs in the classroom. They will facilitate student access to information on their device in support of and to enrich the curriculum while taking into account the varied instructional needs, learning styles, abilities and developmental levels of students. The use of the students own device in class is at the direction of the teacher.

What do I do when…..

I AM BEING BULLIED OR HARASSED BY ANOTHER STUDENT? Canowindra High School aims to be a bully free zone supported by a comprehensive Anti-bullying policy and procedures. Everyone has the right to feel safe at school. Everyone has the right and responsibility to speak out if they are being

bullied or harassed by another student. If you are being bullied or harassed speak to your class teacher, the playground

teacher, your Year Adviser or the student mentors. Reports can also be made via email or the Anti-bullying boxes around

the school. Please see the full policy included in the information package.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence

The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence will be held this Friday 16 March. As bullying is an ongoing issue in schools and society we believe such a day provides an opportunity to highlight anti-bullying procedures. To spread this very important message that bullying is never okay, the school will be focusing on informing students on the impact of bullying and what they should do if they, or someone they know, is a victim to such behaviour. Throughout the week we will be holding a variety of activities. Student leaders will give a brief anti-bullying message to students at the morning assemblies, and the schools Anti-Bullying Policy will be reiterated through year meetings and regular classes. On Friday a mufti day will be held and students are encouraged to wear orange. The usual requirements of no singlet tops, shirts with inappropriate slogans, revealing clothes or non WHS compliant footwear will be enforced If you require any further information regarding the above activities please contact the school on 63441305.

Open Boys Soccer Last Friday, in hot sunny conditions, Canowindra Open Boys soccer team played Henry Lawson High at the Canowindra Sports Trust Oval. In the first half both teams were evenly matched. It was the backs of Alex, Will , Gus and Mitch Clark that made it difficult for the opposition to capitalize on their strong midfield play. With some changes at half time to man up in the middle and to look to cross the ball with more angles up front, the game opened up. It wasn't long before Wade slotted one for Canowindra. With confidence building Canowindra's midfield and forwards started combining with beautiful touch passes and a ripper of a thru ball by Elih to put Wade into a gap for another scoring opportunity. Our second goal was a classic header from Hayden Cummings from an Elih corner kick. This put the game in no doubt and Henry Lawson began to tire. In a enjoyable contest it was Canowindra's second half that opened the game up allowing them to convert their attacking opportunities. Well done team. Mr McKenzie.

Student Representative Council (SRC) for 2018 Congratulations to the following students who have been elected onto the SRC for 2018. Tell Them From Me student feedback survey (Term 1, 2018) This term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 19 March and 29 March. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 16th March. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

BYOD update The school year has started well with many students Bringing Their Own Device to school. Our BYOD Head Teacher, Andrew Hetherington, has been busy building the capacity of staff and giving a range of options for enhanced learning in the classroom. There have been a few issues with devices that have installed Windows 10S. This is a shorter version of Windows 10. All applications have to come through the Microsoft app store before they can be used. This problem can be fixed by a Product code being entered. Students will need to provide their laptop to our Technical Support Officer, Bob Gill, for a day to fix the problem. Parents should be aware of this issue when purchasing a device in the future. We have recommended 32GB of storage on device hard drives in line with the Department of Educations BYOD policy.

This may, in time, be a little short of what is needed, however most of our school work is conducted in the cloud where

storage isn’t an issue. As an added precaution external hard drives and USB devices can be used for extra storage but only

if necessary.
