Question to think about:
• What are some other materials that could be used to make straws or plastic water bottles?
• How has plastic become a problem for our environment?
• How do products we use on land affect our oceans?
• What are the trade-offs between using plastic straws or bottles and not using plastic straws or water bottles?
• How can you creatively and effectively spread the message to reduce plastic use?

Celebrate Earth Day
Real Instruments vs. Found Sounds
Watch the video – PERCUSSION BATTLE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BCPoMjQGRY&feature=youtu.be
Things to think about while you watch the video:
• Which “real” instruments do you see playing in the video?
• What objects did they use to make a “found sound” instrument in the video?
Create and perform your “found sound” instruments:
• Pick and create “found sound” instruments from the video (optional: 1 per family member)
• Practice your instrument(s) with the video (9:30) and then perform them along with your family (14:00)

The following 2 slides include the lyrics to the song: “Recycle Rap!”
1 – listen to the song while following the lyrics (click on speaker if doesn’t start automatically)
2 – read and speak the lyrics in the REFRAIN
3 – play song again and rap along during the REFRAIN and clap each time you
see an asterisk * (this represents a rest in the rhythm)
4 – read and speak the lyrics for the 2 different verses
5 – play song again and rap along throughout
6 – use some of your “found sound” instruments to play the beat or rhythm patterns along with the song – try rapping, playing, or challenge yourself to do both

P.E. 3-5Trash Balls and Plastic Bottle Target Activity
Are you ready for a game of throwing practice?
You will need some old plastic bags, rubber bands or twist-ties, styrofoam packing or newspapers, duct tape, and plastic bottles for targets. Fill a plastic bag with styrofoampacking or wadded-up newspapers. Tie the bag closed with a rubber band or twist-tie. Tape around the ball so that it forms a shape that suits you. Do not feel limited to round balls. A not-so-perfectly-round ball can add a challenge! If you want, make balls in a variety of sizes and densities for an extra workout. Set up your recycled bottles or cans in a design of your choice. Try shooting from different distances too! How many bottles can you knock down in one throw?
What a great way to REUSE things you might be throwing away!
