Teacher InstructionsThis is a task designed to give students practical use of both Lewin’s force field analysis model,and Kotter and Schlesinger’s model for overcoming resistance to change.
TimingsThe full task would take approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
Teaching and Learning strategy1 Students are organised into 5 groups, with each group being given one of the business
research packs to focus on (Blockbuster, Kodak, Nokia, Borders, Comet)
2 Using the research packs (and perhaps their own research), each group needs to completewhat they think were the driving forces for change, and the restraining forces for change fortheir business, using the A3 Lewin grids
3 At this point, the groups share their research with the rest of the class as they then build up a broad picture of the types of driving and restraining forces that can occur in changemanagement scenarios

4 The groups are then advised that they are now consultants for change, and will imagine theyhad been brought in to advise the business at the time when they were facing the pressuresof change. Each group will be given a copy of Kotter and Schlesinger’s ‘model for overcomingresistance to change’ to use as a framework for their recommendations.
5 Each group will use the six ways as a framework for their consultant report, where they willadvise their given business on how they could have successfully introduced changes to theirbusiness, making clear recommendations of how they could have overcome the forces forchange, and successfully adapted their business
Strategies for differentiationAs there are 5 research packs, groups that are more able could be given the businesses or articles that are more complex. There is an opportunity to use mixed ability groups where students with stronger research skills can guide the others.
