Oak Wood Place, a premier senior living community in Athens, Texas, is pleased to announce that Debra Cremers has joined the Oak Wood Place team as Director. Debra will directly oversee the operations of Oak Wood Place Assisted Living and the new senior living community.

Debra joins Oak Wood Place with almost 30 years of health care experience with much of that experience in health care management, training, and senior living. Debra’s nursing experience includes 15 years as a clinical cardiology nurse at Baylor, a background in brain disorders and dementia, and 3 years as a nurse at Oak Wood Place.

Debra’s nursing background and business acumen opened doors in the field of medical management where her responsibilities included the opening of various physician offices and training of staff. As a community education nurse, she also traveled the state promoting senior education and proactive health care. Debra is civic minded and believes strongly in volunteering in your community. As a mother, she volunteered in parent organizations, library boards, and chaired many philanthropic events. For a time, she served on the city council and as Mayor Pro Tem of Gun Barrel City. For the past three years, Debra served as the director for an assisted living facility in Tyler, Texas.

Debra has one son, Jerad, and a step son, William, who both proudly serve our nation in the United States Air Force. Jerad is part of a readiness logistics squadron, and William is now a civilian working with the Department of Defense in California.

Family is important to Debra and caring for others comes naturally. One of the biggest assets Debra brings to Oak Wood is her ability to help families transition. When asked her thoughts about coming back to Oak Wood Place, Debra simply said, “Home is good. I believe in the whole concept of assisted living…safety …security…socialization.”

“We are very excited to have Debra leading the Oak Wood team,” says Blake Daniels of Daniels Partners. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our community. We look forward to working with her as we unveil Oak Wood Place Senior Living, a community unlike any other in Henderson County,” says Daniels. Debra is eager for the new facility to open in January 2013 and extends an invitation to all to stop by and see the extraordinary lifestyle that is uniquely Oak Wood Place.

The Red Hat Ladies of Oak Wood Place have two large boxed filled for needy children with gifts for Toys-for-Tots in conjunction with the Athens Fire Department.

This year the Men’s Club participated in the Cowboy Church- Project Christmas Box, and raised $55.00 to make 7 boxes filled with toys for children!

Employee of the MonthA note from our Employee of the Month, Carolyn Richardson:

I am originally from a small town of 2,000 plus in Northern Oklahoma named Newkirk. My parents were Oscar and Ruby Matney, and they were hardworking, God fearing people that raised me right. I was an only child, and my parents taught me patience, acceptance, tolerance, and blessed me with their wisdom.

I graduated in 1965 and went to work for the local farmer’s CoOp. I was engaged to be married, and when the engagement ended, I came to Texas to go to college in Athens. I chose Athens because the minister at the First Christian Church had formerly been in Newkirk as the minister of my church, and he and his family and I were very close. After graduating from Henderson County Junior College, I married Truitt Richardson and made East Texas my home. We had two children, Genia and Andrew. Truitt and I were married for over 25 years and lived in the Baxter area outside of Athens. Truitt passed away in 2003 after battling cancer.

I first became involved in the health care industry through my work in accounting. I worked for a small firm who kept books for nursing homes all throughout East Texas and Houston. I even assisted in the development of an accounting program for nursing homes. In 1972, the owner of this accounting service and her husband opened their own nursing home in Athens, and I was fortunate to go to work there in the front office. That was the beginning of my career in health care.

Happy Birthday

Resident of the MonthOriginally from the Dallas area, Matt has called Oak Wood Place home for the past ten years. He grew up in a household of boys. As the oldest of five, Matt and his brothers kept their parents quite busy! Matt, Michael, Adam, Anthony, and Daniel remain close even though miles now separate them. Raised in a Roman Catholic home, the boys attended Catholic schools from the time they entered elementary school. Matt worked for United Artists Theaters for many years in the Prestonwood and Plano areas of North Dallas. He also has experience in the fast food industry and Tom Thumb grocery. Matt’s customer service experience shines brightly as he is always quick to offer assistance to the Oak Wood staff and residents. Because of Matt’s extra effort, the bus steps are always in place, Friday horse race names are called, and bingo cards are organized and ready for next time. Shena, the Oak Wood Place social director, is thankful to have such a dependable volunteer assist her with these activities. Matt is always willing to help and never misses an Oak Wood event. He was a winning participant in the Senior Olympics where only inches kept him from winning first place in the “hoop it up” contest. He is proud of that hard-earned third place ribbon and intends to bring home first place in 2013! Years ago, one of Matt’s school friends, Gabby, invited him to a KISS concert. That event just solidified his love of rock and roll music! Living in the Dallas area made it easy for Matt to zip down to the Coca Cola Starplex to hear rock and roll legends live in the amphitheater. The impressive list of concerts includes Alice Cooper, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Chicago, Tina Turner, Aerosmith, Pat Benatar, and many more. Now Matt has an extensive collection of CDs and a decent selection of DVDs. He never tires of rocking to his favorites—Led Zeppelin, Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimmy Hendrix, and Todd Rundgren. Matt’s love of music has even rocked over to his Internet presence. Even though he claims to be a computer novice, he has mastered www.rockabilia.com where he does a little shopping every now and then!Christmas is right around the corner, and Matt is prepared. He has put lots of thought into special gifts for his family and has them wrapped and ready to go. Matt is looking forward to spending the holiday with one of his brothers and his family. “Giving just the right gift is such a big part of Christmas,” Matt said, “and getting gifts is good, too!”

It has been quite an adventure working all these years with the very special people I have been blessed to serve. I have truly enjoyed the last ten years at Oak Wood Place and hope I have been at least half the blessing to them that they have been to me!

In my leisure time, I enjoy reading and watching sports, but the best times for me are when I get to be with my children. Family is very important to me, and I am looking forward to spending time with them during this holiday season.
