● Oil Cooled Disc Brakes — Provide retarding,service, parking, and secondary braking in a sin-gle sealed, fade-resistant, maintenance-free unit.Standard on the 770 through 775F and 777D,front brakes are caliper disc and can be switchedout of the service system when not needed butactivate as part of the secondary system. Standardon the 777F through 797F, front brakes are oil-cooled disc, providing excellent control in slipperyconditions.

● Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) This optionis standard on 770-797F — Electron ically controlsbraking on grade to maintain optimal engine RPMand oil cooling. ARC benefits include engine over-speed protection, ease of opera tion, faster down-hill speeds, smoother ride and better control inslippery conditions, and fuel efficiency.

● Traction Control System (TCS) (option) —Electronically monitors and controls rear wheelslippage for greater traction and enhanced truckperformance in poor underfoot conditions. If slip-page exceeds a set limit, the oil-cooled disc brakesengage to slow the spinning wheel. Torque is thenautomatically transferred to the wheel with bet-ter traction. Available on the 770 through 797F.

● Full Hydraulic Steering — Functions with frontsuspension cylinders serving as kingpins.

● Suspension Cylinders — Four independent,self-contained, nitrogen/oil-pneumatic suspensioncylinders absorb loading and road shocks. Widespacing for stability.

● Truck Bodies — A variety of truck bodies areavailable to meet your application specific require -ments. Those options include MSDII (mine spe-cific design), X, flat floor, dual slope and gateless coalbodies. The Caterpillar body program ensures thetruck is configured for an optimal haulage solution.

● Integral Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS)— Integral Four-Post ROPS cab standard on allmodels. Resiliently mounted to the main frame toreduce vibration and sound, the integral ROPSstructure is designed as an extension of the truckframe. The ROPS/FOPS structure provides “fivesided protection” for the operator and trainer.

● Separate Hydraulic Systems — Prevent crosscontamination.

● Safety — Caterpillar continues to be proactivein developing construction and mining trucks thatmeet or exceed safety standards. Safety is an inte-gral part of the machine design.

An example of enhanced safety through the devel-op ment of products, processes and solutionsincludes Cat® Integrated Object Detection System™which is an integrated camera and radar tech-nology. More information on Object Detection isavailable in the technology section.

NOTE: Not all features are available on all models at this time. But considerationwill be made to include on next generation trucks if applicable.

Sustainability:A variety of features improve sustainability in

areas of decreasing waste, extending component lifeand lowering emissions levels. The 777F, 785D and797F trucks offer Oil Renewal systems. The 785D,793F, 797F trucks offer Continuous Rear Axle Filtra -tion, Extended Life Filters and Extended mainte-nance intervals which aid in decreasing the amountof waste contributed to our environment.● Engines with advanced technology contribute

less emissions to the environment while main-taining fuel efficiency.

● Advanced Surface Technology (AST) is areplace ment for hard chrome coatings on some steelparts, including Suspension and hoist Cylinder Rods.

● Other features on 793F, 797F Mining trucksinclude rear axle oil savers, front wheel sightglass, two piece cover on the final drive, ecologydrains and brake wear indicators all of which helpto maximize component life.

NOTE: Not all features are available on all models at this time. But considerationwill be made to include on next generation trucks if applicable.

Non-Dumper Offerings:For certain applications the Caterpillar OEM

Solu tion Group offers non-dumper arrangementsfor the 773F, 775F, 777F and 785D.

USE OF BRAKE PERFORMANCE CURVESThe speed that can be maintained when the

machine is descending a grade with retarder appliedcan be determined from the retarder curves in thissection when gross machine weight and total effec-tive grade are known.

Select appropriate grade distance chart that coverstotal downhill haul; don’t break haul into individ-ual segments.

To determine brake performance: Read from grossweight down to the percent effective grade. (Effec -tive grade equals actual % grade minus 1% for each10 kg/metric ton (20 lb./U.S. ton) of rolling resis-tance.) From this weight-effective grade point, readhorizontally to the curve with the highest obtain ablespeed range, then down to maximum descent speedbrakes can safely handle without exceeding coolingcapacity. When braking, engine RPM should bemaintained at the highest possible level withoutoverspeeding. If cooling oil overheats, reduce groundspeed to allow transmission to shift to next lowerspeed range.

train efficiency is an important consideration. Tobetter illustrate the advantages of mechanical driveperformance, grade horsepower, power train effi-ciency, and retarding horsepower should be com-pared to electric drive trucks.

Most electric drive trucks runat constant maximum horsepower while under load.Mechanical drive trucks, however, lug the engineand may produce somewhat less than maximumhorsepower. Engine power curves must be utilizedto determine exact horsepower produced.

This exercise illustrates the effect of an efficientmechanical drive power train and should yieldresults in the 80-85% efficiency range. The samecalculation for electric drive trucks would be lower(70-78% range) with a maximum efficiency of about78% for the most common systems.
