CONSTRUCTING MY ENVIRONMENT

Callum Deighton

Starting My Environment

I started my environment with first building the cockpit and adding the first part of the hallway. The reason I decided to use that design for the front of the ship is that I thought it looked very unique which I thought would greatly benefit my environment.

Corridors/Window TexturesHere I started work on was the corridors that would lead all around the station. I also added some windows to my corridors and to the cockpit via extruding the surfaces in and adding a glass texture so it would allow the camera to look out during my video. When it came to extending the corridors I simply duplicated the existing model of the corridor I had and used the duplications to make it longer, which is a much simpler solution then recreating the corridor each time.

Creating Rooms

At this point I extended the hallways for the right side of the ship and created the computer room as well as the bedroom for the ship. Originally the bedroom was the same size as the computer room but I extended it so when it came time to eventually adding the objects such as the beds and drawers I had enough space to add some more of them to make an accurate number for the crew that would work on the ship.

Bathrooms

The next part I worked on was the left side of the space ship where the bathrooms would be located. Firstly I created a small room which would lead to where the bathrooms would be located. After that I used the Boolean tool on each of the parallel walls to make a hallway that would lead to the bathrooms. After that I created a small room for one of the bathrooms then duplicated it and placed it on the other side.

Engine Rooms

After creating the bathrooms the next part I worked on was making the engine rooms. I started by adding a very wide room in which it would lead to the engine rooms on each side but also the entrance to the ship. Once I made the hallway I used the Boolean tool on each end of the hallway so I could create a doorway for the engine rooms and entrance. Once I had done that I created two large rooms which would stand as the engine rooms. I made them quite large so I could make sure to have enough space to fit the engines.

Entrance

Once I finished designing the engine rooms the next part I started to create the entrance of my ship. I started by creating another wide hallway similar to the one I had already made, this is so I could fit multiple doorways for my next part. I also used the Boolean tool to create a giant hole in the middle of the wall. This is going to be where my camera goes through at the start of my video so I made sure to make it wide enough.

Off-Limit Rooms

The next part I started to create were the off-limit areas. I started by making some small corridors from the entrance that would curve around to the rooms. I managed to do this easily by using the multishift tool to create a hallway out of the end of the hallway, creating a giant room which would be the off-limit room, then using the mirror tool to duplicate what I had created onto the opposite side, thus getting rid of the need to do the process all over again. After creating these rooms I could now add the objects I had created to my environment.

Adding The Objects

The first objects I added to my spaceship were the chairs that would be put into the cockpit. I placed 3 in there with one in the front and two behind it which I made sure to be parallel as it would look a lot more neat, this is so it would look like that’s where the captain of the spaceship and two of his crew would sit.

Adding The Objects

The next objects I would add into my spaceship would be the computers for the computer room. I placed one of the computer objects at the corner of the room then duplicated the object and put the duplicated next to each other until they would fit across the entire wall. I did this because I thought it would look like a nice design having them that way.

Adding The Objects

The next room I worked on was the bedroom of my spaceship. I added the bed objects but made sure to place enough to fit the room but I also made them parallel from each other as it made it look coordinated which was the look I wanted for my spaceship.

Adding The ObjectsWhen it came to making the bathroom I wanted to be very precise with adding the objects. First I extended the hallway into the room so then I could place the toilets around each side of the walls of the hallway. Once I had done that and added the toilet objects I created two doors for the toilets by making two cube objects and having them placed at the corners of the end of the hallway. Finally I added two taps parallel from each other just outside the doors for my bathroom. After this I selected all the objects in the room and mirrored them so they would appear in the other room.

Adding The ObjectsNext came adding the engines onto my spaceship. Originally I had decided to just place two of the engines into each room but then looking at the size of the ship I decided to change the amount of engines on each room from two to four as I believe it was a much more realistic amount for a ship that size. I also placed the engines carefully so that the opposite end could be seen by the camera as it enters the room.

Adding The ObjectsThe final objects I added to my spaceship where the shutter doors for the off limit. I wanted to make them look very noticeable and have the camera notice the textures so I made sure to make the object very large to fit the room walls. Once I had done this I mirrored it to make sure it would appear on the other side as well.

Final ChangesBefore I went to film my finished environment I added a few more changes to the ship. The first change I did was I made sure all the walls had a bright white texture so it would give off that futuristic “clean” look as that was the look I intended for the ship to give off. The other change I did was I changed all the textures of the roofs to a mirror texture, similar to the windows in the corridors. This was so when filming the environment some light could get into the rooms so the camera could properly see what was inside.
