“I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome direction, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power” --Thomas Jefferson

It is essential that schools and communities foster a reasoned commitment to the founding principles of the U.S. Constitution and the values that bind us together as a people. How can public schools prepare the next generation to commit to democratic principles, engage in civic service, and sustain our Constitutional republic? Speakers include:

• Juan Arambula, former Assemblyman, attorney, school board member • Esmeralda Z. Soria, Fresno City Council • Honorable Rosendo Peña, Jr., Justice on the California Fifth District Court of Appeal • Lorenzo Rios, Chief Executive Officer, Clovis Veterans Memorial District • Ismail Ali, Fresno State Alum and UC Berkeley Law Student

Speakers will be followed by a Community Dialogue on these questions: 1. What is working now with K-12 civic education and engagement? 2. What improvements would revitalize civic education? Facilitated by John Minkler, Civic Educator, and Deborah Nankivell, Director of the Fresno Business Council
