Why do we vote the way we vote… or not?

● Liberal, Conservative● What shapes our political beliefs?● How does that translate to voting behavior???
Party Identification - some more review
● Most people identify with one of the major political parties early in life○ Republican v. Democrat
● Loyalty to a party is the single most significant predictor of how a person will vote. A “shortcut” for ideology and positions on specific issues○ Conservatives tend to vote Republican○ Liberals tend to vote Democratic○ A growing % of the population identifies now as “Independent”○ Many independents “lean” left or right
Remember the factors that influence political affiliation… think to Four Corners activity!● Age● Gender● Region● Education● Income● Race ● Occupation

Voter Turnout
Factors that influence voter turnout:
● Demographics!
PLUS…
● Election Interest (candidates, issues, etc)● Election type (president, state, local)● Efficacy (the belief that your vote actually matters)● Attitudes towards government
Why don’t people vote? We can categorize them:
● Cannot Voters○ Aliens○ Mentally/physically handicapped○ Some people in prison
● Nonvoters○ People who do NOT vote
● Political Efficacy○ The belief that your individual vote counts/matters/makes a difference○ So if people don’t vote do they have high or low political efficacy?
Some more factors affecting turnout...
● Off Year Elections - Congressional elections that don’t take place during a Presidential Election year
● Ballot Fatigue - as a vote ballot increases in length, voters tend to run out of patience and may not be sure what they are voting on
● Inconvenient registration● “Time Zone Fallout” - East coast time zone can ruin the vote for the west
coast
