Abstract.

The purposes of this research was to

gather economic, social, and culturalknowledge on the cultivation of indigenousupland rice varieties in Phluthuean area, asthere was very little upland rice incultivation, and therefore to tried to findways to conserve the cultivation to

maintain the identity of the area. Data wascollected in the field by interviewing,observation and photograph analysis. Theresearch findings were summarized asfollows: The history of local upland ricecultivation of Phluthuean was not evident.

The varieties that were commonly grownincluded Daeng Yod, Dok Pa-yom, HoneySticky Rice and Black Sticky Rice betweenSeptember and March depending on theweather of each year. Most were grown atMoo 1 of Banbenja. There were traditionalknowledge and equipment used in the

making seed holes, carved bamboo polesfor placing rice seeds and rice reapers. Thelocals believed in binding rice to worship ofthe goddess of rice. Apart from growing ricefor consumption purpose, there were alsoprocessing groups formed to process riceproducts to distribute additional incomes

among the members of the groups.Conservation of the rice cultivation neededboth contributions from the local partiesand local administrative organisations.
