Uses

To produce air entrained concrete for increased durability andresistance to damage by frost and deicing salts. Typicalapplications include concrete roads and bridge decks, airportrunways and taxiways and other extensive areas of concreteexposed to potential frost damage.

To improve cohesion and workability of concrete mixes wherepoorly graded aggregates must be used and bleeding,segregation or sand runs occur.

As part of a combined admixture system for the production ofready mixed retarded mortar.

Advantages

Air entrainment increases the resistance of concrete to attackby frost and de-icing salts, reducing problems of surfacescaling and concrete failure.

Entrained air bubbles assist in the formation of a stablecohesive mix, reducing segregation and bleeding.

Air entrainment improves workability and helps produce adense, uniform, close textured surface free from gravel nestsand sand runs, so further enhancing durability.

Excellent air bubble stability allows use with a wide rangeof aggregate qualities and mix conditions.

Standards compliance

Conplast AEA complies with BS 5075 Part 2, BS 4887 Part 1,ASTM C260 and with the Department of Transport Specificationfor Highway Works.

Description

Conplast AEA is a chloride free air entraining admixture basedon neutralised vinson resin. It is supplied as a translucentwater white coloured solution which instantly disperses inwater.

Conplast AEA acts at the interface between the mixing waterand cement/aggregate particles to produce microscopic airbubbles, which are evenly distributed throughout the concrete.The entrained air enhances durability by providing protectionagainst the rapid temperature changes found in freezing andthawing conditions and with the use of de-icing salts.

Properties

Appearance : Translucent coloured liquid

Chloride content : Nil to BS 5075

Specific gravity : 1.01 at 270C

Alkali content : Typically less than 14.0g Na2O equivalent /litre of admixture.

pH : 7

Factors affecting air entrainment :

Sand content : The quantity of air entrained will increase withincreasing sand content - typically an increase in sand contentfrom 35 to 45% will raise the air content from 4.5 to 6.0%.

Cement fineness and content : The amount of air entrainedreduces with an increase in cement fineness or content.

Aggregate quality : Silt content variations can adversely affectthe degree of air entrainment. This is particularly relevant tothe use of crushed aggregate during inclement weather.Excessive silt content may render Conplast AEA ineffective.

Organic impurities : Carbon can reduce the effectiveness ofConplast AEA. This does not normally create a problem, butcaution should be exercised when using PFA or somepigments. Where this type of material is to be used alternativeadmixtures are available.

Concrete temperature : A temperature increase will reduceair content. In practice, daily fluctuations are much smallerand do not cause significant variation.

Mixing and pumping : Air content will increase with increasedtime of mixing up to about two minutes in stationary mixers andabout 15 minutes in transit mixers. Thereafter, the air contentgenerally remains constant for a considerable period. Smalllosses of air may occur during pumping. With long pipelines,air content in excess of 5% may seriously reduce the efficiencyof the pump.

Compaction of concrete : Prolonged vibration should beavoided.

Setting time : Negligible effect at normal dosage rate.

Compatibility : Conplast AEA can be used with all types ofPortland cements and is generally compatible with otheradmixtures. It is recommended that all admixtures be addedto concrete separately.

Reduced permeability : The microscopic air bubblesintroduced by use of Conplast AEA break up the capillarystructure within concrete and hence reduce waterpermeability.

Durability : Reducing the water permeability of concrete offersincreased resistance to weather exposure and attack inaggressive environments.

Frost resistance : The addition of Conplast AEA producescontrolled air space.

Compressive strength : A 15% free water reduction is oftenpossible with Conplast AEA. This resultant increasedcompressive strength normally offsets the anticipatedstrength loss associated with air entrainment, thus producingair entrained concrete with no increase in cement content.

Resistance to salts : Air entrainment increases theresistance of concrete to surface scaling, which is an adverseeffect associated with repeated exposure to marine salts orapplication of de-icing salts to the concrete surface.

Application instructions

Typical dosage

The optimum dosage of Conplast AEA to meet specificrequirements must always be determined by trials using thematerials and conditions that will be experienced in use. Thisallows the optimisation of admixture dosage and mix designand provides a complete assessment of the concrete mix.

As a starting point for trials a dosage of 0.08 litres/100kg ofcement will typically give an air content of 5% + 1.5% in amedium workability concrete of 300 - 350 kg/m3 cementitiouscontent. Where cement replacement materials are used theyshould be included in the cementitious content for purposesof calculating admixture dosage. The presence of PFA ormicrosilica may increase the dosage required to obtain aparticular air content.

Use at other dosages

Dosages outside the typical ranges suggested on this sheetmay be used if necessary and suitable to meet particular mixrequirements, provided that adequate supervision isavailable. Compliance with requirements must be assessedthrough trial mixes. Contact Fosroc for advice in these cases.

Compatibility

Conplast AEA is compatible with other Fosroc admixturesused in the same concrete mix. All admixtures should beadded to the concrete separately and must not be mixedtogether prior to addition. The resultant properties of concretecontaining more than one admixture should be assessed bythe trial mix.

Conplast AEA is suitable for use with all types of ordinaryportland cement. Contact Fosroc for use with specialcements and blends containing cement replacementmaterials.

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast AEA should be measured bymeans of a recommended dispenser. The admixture shouldthen be added to the concrete with the mixing water to obtainthe best results. Contact Fosroc for advice regarding suitableequipment and its installation.

Curing

As with all structural concrete, good curing practice shouldbe maintained. Water spray, wet hessian or a Concure*spray applied curing membranes should be used.

Overdosing

An overdose of double the recommended measure ofConplast AEA will increase workability and air content andcan result in slight set retardation of the concrete. Theultimate strength of the concrete should not be impaired ifadvantage is taken of the water reduction and the concrete isadequately cured.

Conplast AEA is supplied in 5, 20 and 200 litre drums.

Storage

Conplast AEA has a minimum shelf life of 12 months inunopened containers under normal warehouse conditions.

Uses

Conplast M1 disperses the fine particles in the concrete mix,enabling the water content of the concrete to perform moreeffectively. The very high levels of water reduction possibleallow major increases in strength to be obtained.

Instructions for use

Mix design

Where the primary intention is to improve strengths, initialtrials should be made with normal concrete mix designs.The addition of the admixture will allow the removal of waterfrom the mix whilst maintaining the workability at the levelsobtained before the use of the admixture.

Where the primary intention is to provide high workabilityconcrete, the starting mix design should be one suitable foruse as a pump mix. Such mixes have higher fines contentsfor increased cohesion. Advice on mix design for flowingconcrete is available from Fosroc.

After initial trials, minor modifications to the mix design maybe made to optimise performance.

Compatibility

Conplast M1 is compatible with other Fosroc admixtures usedin the same concrete mix. All admixtures should be added tothe concrete separately and must not be mixed together priorto addition.

Full blending of the admixture and the concreteshould be ensured by mixing in the truck drum at high speedfor at least two minutes.

Effects of overdosing

Uses

Dispensing and mixing

Conplast MS should always be added in the early stages ofthe mixing process. It is recommended that Conplast MS beweight batched to the required quantity prior to addition to themix.

In dry batching operations, Conplast MS should be dryblended with aggregates and cement prior to the addition ofwater to the mixer. In wet batching operations Conplast MSshould be added to the mixer at the same time as the cement.Conplast MS can if required, be added to the mixer in slurryform.

In order to achieve a low water cement ratio, the use of highrange water reducing admixtures such as Conplast SP430,Conplast SP423 are highly recommended.

Placing

When producing concrete with Conplast MS we suggest atarget slump in the range of 25 to 35 mm in excess of thenormal slump requirement, this will accomodate the additionalcohesion promoted by the use of Conplast MS.

Concrete produced with Conplast MS will have greatlyimproved cohesive qualities.

Uses

To accelerate the setting and early strength gain of Portlandcement concrete and mortar mixes without the introductionof chloride. Acts as a plasticiser, so gives significantincreases in both ultimate and early strengths. Typicalapplications include precast concrete, concrete placed in coldweather, concrete for repairs, mortars for brickwork.

Acceleration : The addition of Conplast NC to Portlandcement concrete mixes accelerates both the setting and rateof strength gain. The strength improvements are mostsignificant during the first 18 hours.

Long term effects : Accelerated corrosion testing of steel inconcrete has shown that Conplast NC does not affect theprotection of steel afforded by cement against corrosion evenat four times the normal dose level.


Dosage

The recommended dosage range for standard concrete andmortar mixes with all grades of Portland cement is 2.0 to 3.0litres per 100 kg cement (see table).

Over dosage

An overdose of double the recommended amount of ConplastNC will result in a slight increase in initial acceleration, butwill not materially alter the ultimate strength or characteristicsof the cured concrete or mortar.

Mixing

Conplast NC should be stirred before use.

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast NC should be measured bymeans of a recommended dispenser.

The company's technical department should be consultedregarding suitable equipment and its installation.

Conplast NC should be added direct into the mixer. Bestresults are obtained when added at the same time as themixing water.

Curing

Concure WB, curing membrane or alternative methods suchas polythene, water spray or wet hessian should be used.

Conplast P211 conforms to IS:9103-1999. It also complieswith IS : 2645 : 2003 as an integral waterproofing compoundand ASTM C494 Type A as a normal water reducing admixture.

Conplast® P211

Reducing water permeability ('Waterproofing')

One of the most effective means by which the water permeabilityof a concrete mix can be reduced is to make a large reductionin water-cement ratio. Conplast P211 can be used to providesuch a reduction and to produce a concrete with the benefitsof low permeability.

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast P211 should be measured bymeans of a recommended dispenser. The admixture shouldthen be added to the concrete with the mixing water to obtain thebest results.


An overdose of double the intended amount of Conplast P211will result in an increase in retardation as compared to thatnormally obtained at the intended dosage. This effect is foundwith most water reducing admixtures although the degree mayvary. Retardation is affected by factors other than the admixturedepending on the mix details and conditions involved. Trials toassess the effects in a particular mix are strongly recommendedif this aspect is of particular importance, provided that adequatecuring is maintained. The ultimate strength of the concrete willnot be impaired by increased retardation and will generally beincreased. The effects of overdosing will be further increasedif sulphate resisting cement or cement replacement materialsare used.

Overdosage may also cause increased air entrainment, whichwill tend to reduce strength. The degree of this effect will dependon the particular mix design and overdose level.

An overdose will tend to increase the plasticising effect of theadmixture. As concrete is normally batched to a target workability,increased plasticising will allow an increasing ultimate strengthand partially or fully offsetting the effect of any increased airentrainment. If no increase in water reduction is taken and asignificant rise in workability is allowed the chance ofsegregation may be higher. Increased initial workability willtend to extend the working life of the concrete, which will delayfinishing and stiffening time to some extent.

Curing

As with all structural concrete, good curing practice shouldbe maintained, particularly in situations where an overdosehas occurred. Water spray, wet hessian or a Concure sprayapplied curing membrane should be used.

Uses

Conplast P509 is a high performance plasticiser whichallows large water reductions resulting in significant increasein early and ultimate strengths. Increased workability can beachieved without loss in strength. Conplast P509 can beused as a retarding water-reducing admixture at higherdosages.

Conplast P509 complies with the requirements of BS:5075part 1 and ASTM C494 types A & D as well as IS 9103 1999.

Description

Conplast P509 is a formulated blend of polymeric materialsbased on hydrolysed carbohydrate derivatives. It is designedto give maximum cement particle dispersion withoutproducing unwanted side effects. This results in good, denseconcrete having exceptionally high strength.

Conplast P509 acts as a normal water reducing admixture atlow to medium dosage rates. At higher dosages, it acts as aretarding plasticiser. The amount of retardation will alsodepend on chemical composition of the cement and concretetemperature.

Compatibility : Can be used with all types of portland andslag cements except high alumina cements. ConplastP509 is compatible with other Fosroc admixtures providedthey are added separately.

Workability : The addition of Conplast P509 without reductionin the water content, increases the slump and significantlyimproves concrete flow characteristics without decrease inconcrete strength.

Setting time : Initial and final setting times will relate to cementtype and ambient temperature. But typically the initial settingis extended between 1 to 4 hours depending upon dosageand temperature at constant workability.

Compressive strength : Table 1 shows typical results whereincreased workability is obtained at original water cementratio and increase in strength where workability is maintainedand water cement ratio reduced.

Durability : Where the water reducing properties of ConplastP509 are utilised, there is increase in density, durability andthe resistance of concrete to attack by aggressive agents.The reduced water cement ratio makes concrete lesspermeable.


Dosage

The optimum dosage determined by site trials with a specificconcrete mix which enables the effects of workability, strengthgain and setting time to be measured. The rate of addition ofConplast P509 is typical between 160ml to 500ml per 100kgcement. At dosages beyond 400ml per 100 kg of cement, itmay act as a retarding plasticiser.

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast P509 should be measuredby means of a suitable dispenser. The measured quantity ofConplast P509 should be added directly to the mixerpreferably by dispensing to the mixing water. If the mixingwater is added in more than one stage, Conplast P509 shouldbe added at the last stage.

Overdosing

Any overdosing of Conplast P509 can result in increasedretardation of the initial set of the concrete. The ultimatestrength of the concrete will not be affected and could beincreased if advantage is taken of the increased workabilityby reducing water.

Uses

To Improve the quality and long term durability of concreteexposed to severe weathering conditions. It Increases theresistance of concrete to damage by sea water, frost and de-icing salts and also makes concrete structures less prone tocracking.

Reduces the permeability of low cement content concrete formass pours such as dams and breakwaters.

Improves the cohesion and workability of concrete wherepoorly graded or harsh sands and aggregates have to be usedand minimises bleeding.

As an ideal pumping aid to maintain cohesiveness and tominimise segregation where concrete is placed mechanically.

Advantages

Improved quality : Increased workability and cohesionassist in producing a dense, uniform, close - texuredsurface, free from segregation, sand runs and surfacewater and improves impermeability of concrete structuresand also makes it less prone to cracking.

Description

Conplast PA21(S) is supplied as a dark brown liquid basedon selected sugar reduced lignosulphonates in combinationwith compatible surface active agents.

Conplast PA21(S) is a chloride free admixture used to entraina controlled volume of air in a concrete mix whilst permitting,through its plasticising action, significant reduction in the freewater content of the mix.

Conplast PA21(S) acts at the interface of the cement aggregateparticles and mixing water to be distributed throughout theconcrete. The entrained air bubbles are of the optimum

diameter and spacing to give durability under freeze-thaw orsalt attack conditions whilst enhancing lubrication duringplacing and produce impervious concrete.

Sand content : The quantity of air entrained will increase withincreasing sand content - typically an increase in sand contentfrom 35 to 45% will raise the air content from 4.5 to 6.0%.

Cement fineness and content : The amount of air entrainedreduces with an increase in cement fineness or content.

Aggregate quality : Silt content variations can adversely affectthe degree of air entrainment. This is particularly relevant tothe use of crushed aggregate during inclement weather.Excessive silt content may render Conplast PA21(S) ineffective.

Conplast PA21(S) dosage (Ltr/50 kg. cement\)

Conplast® PA21(S)

Organic impurities : Carbon can reduce the effectiveness ofConplast PA21(S). This does not normally create a blem, butcaution should be exercised when using PFA or somepigments, where this type of material is to be used alternativeadmixtures are available.

Concrete temperature : A temperature increase will reduceair content. In practice, daily fluctuations are much smallerand do not cause significant variation.

Mixing and pumping : Air content will increase with increasedtime of mixing up to about two minutes in stationary mixers andabout 15 minutes in transit mixers. Thereafter, the air contentgenerally remains constant for a considerable period. Smalllosses of air may occur during pumping. With long pipelines,air content in excess of 5% may seriously reduce the efficiencyof the pump.

Compaction of concrete : Prolonged vibration should beavoided.

Setting time : Negligible effect at normal dosage rate.

Compatibility : Conplast PA21(S) can be used with all typesof Portland cements and is generally compatible with otheradmixtures. It is recommended that all admixtures be addedto concrete separately.

Reduced permeability : The microscopic air bubblesintroduced by use of Conplast PA21(S) break up the capillarystructure within concrete and hence reduce water permeability.

Durability : Reducing the water permeability of concrete offersincreased resistance to weather exposure and attack inaggressive environments.

Frost resistance : The addition of Conplast PA21(S)produces controlled air space.

Compressive strength : A 15% free water reduction is oftenpossible with Conplast PA21(S). This resultant increasedcompressive strength normally offsets the anticipated strengthloss associated with air entrainment, thus producing airentrained concrete with no increase in cement content.

Resistance to salts : Air entrainment increases the resistanceof concrete to surface scaling, which is an adverse effectassociated with repeated exposure to marine salts orapplication of de-icing salts to the concrete surface.


Dosage

The optimum dosage is best determined by site trials with theactual concrete mix which enables the effect of workability andair content to be measured. The rate of addition is generallywithin the range of 0.10 - 0.20 litres of Conplast PA21(S) per50 kg cement according to the air content required. A dosageof 0.15 litres for 50Kg cement is normally sufficient to obtain5% air entrainment.

Dispensing

The use of dispensing equipment is strongly recommendedand wherever possible Conplast PA21(S) should be added tothe gauging water as it enters the mixer. Fosroc should beconsulted regarding suitable equipment and installation. Anumber of factors previously mentioned will affect the degreeof air entrainment and once the rate of application has beenestablished, care should be taken to ensure consistency ofraw material supplied, mixing and delivery procedures.

Conplast® PA21(S)

Mix design

Where Conplast PA21(S) is used in an existing mix design, thecement and aggregate proportions should be adjusted to takeinto account the increase in yield. The sand content cannormally be reduced by about 20kg/m2 for each additional 1%of air entrained.

Curing

Efficient concrete curing is essential and is best achieved byuse of Concure WB spray applied curing compound. Iftraditional methods such as water spray or wet hessian areused, they must be carried out thoroughly.

Bleeding / segregation :

The addition of Conplast PA21(S) produces a more cohesivemix, and with good mix design reduces bleeding andsegregation allowing even harsh mixes to be placed andcompacted easily. The following table illustrates the reductionof bleeding by using Conplast PA21(S) and the sample mix aspreviously described. Overdosing

An overdose of double the recommended measure of ConplastPA21(S) will increase workability and air content and canresult in slight set retardation of the concrete. Description

Conplast R a brown chloride free liquid is based on ahydroxycarboxylic acid derivative which instantly dispersesin water.

Conplast R disperses the fine particles in the concrete mix,enabling the water content of the concrete to perform moreeffectively. This effect can be used to improve workability, toincrease ultimate strengths or to facilitate a reduction in thecement content.

The retarding properties of Conplast R can also be beneficialin concrete where high cement content or high temperaturesare involved. Cold joints in continuous pours may be avoidedand the use of lower cement contents will reduce heat ofhydration.

Conplast R is particularly suitable for cohesive and cementrich mixes. For lean mixes which are prone to segregationConplast RP264*† may prove more suitable.

Dosage

The optimum dosage of Conplast R to meet specificrequirements should always be determined by trials usingthe materials and conditions that will be experienced in use.The normal dosage range is 0.3 to 0.6 litres/100 kg ofcementitious material, including PFA, GGBFS or microsilica.




An overdose of double the intended amount Conplast R willresult in a significant increase in retardation as compared tothat normally obtained at the intended dosage. Provided thatadequate curing is maintained, the ultimate strength of theconcrete will not be impaired by increased retardation andwill generally be increased.

The effects of overdosing will be further increased if sulphateresisting cement or cement replacement materials are used.

Retardation

The level of retardation obtained may be varied by alteringthe dosage of Conplast R used, this will also alter the level ofwater reduction obtained. Retardation is also affected byfactors other than the admixture, depending on the mix detailsand conditions involved. Major factors include the following:

a) Cement replacement materials and SRC cements willusually give greater levels of retardation than concretemixes made with ordinary Portland cement at the sameadmixture dosage. Trials need to be conducted toestablish the required dosage.

b) High temperatures will require increased dosages toobtain the same change in stiffening time compared to acontrol mix.

c) Changes in cement content, source or chemistry maylead to variations in the retardation obtained. Theamount of tri-calcium aluminate in the cement has beenidentified as being one of the main contributory factors inthis respect, with a lower level leading to greaterretardation.

d) The use of a combination of admixtures in the sameconcrete mix and or cement replacements may alter thesetting time. Trials should always be conducted todetermine such setting times.

Compatibility

Conplast R is compatible with other Fosroc admixtures usedin the same concrete mix. All admixtures should be added tothe concrete separately and must not be premixed togetherprior to addition. The resultant properties of concretecontaining more than one admixture should be assessed bytrial mixes.

Conplast R is suitable for use with all types of Portlandcements and cement replacement materials such as PFA,GGBFS and microsilica.

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast R should be measured bymeans of a recommended dispenser. The admixture shouldthen be added to the concrete with the mixing water to obtainthe best results. Contact Fosroc for advice regarding suitableequipment and its installation.

Conplast R is available in 210 litre drums and bulk supply.For larger users, storage tanks can be supplied.

Storage

Health and safety

Conplast R does not fall into the hazard classifications ofcurrent regulations. However, it should not be swallowed orallowed to come into contact with skin and eyes.

Description

Conplast RP264 is a dark brown liquid based on selectedlignosulphonates. When added to concrete mixes theadmixture is absorbed onto the cement particles. It then actsas a dispersing agent which breaks down agglomerates ofcement particles and enables the water in the mix to performmore efficiently.

Conplast RP264 delays the initial hydration of the cementwhich results in retardation of the setting time. However, oncethe concrete has undergone initial set, the hardening processcontinues normally.

Conplast RP264 will normally be added at a rate between0.1 and 0.30 litres /50 kg cement depending on the slumpand retardation required. Site trials should be carried out todetermine optimum dosage. If used for cement reductionwithout loss in strength the dosage is normally 0.15 litres /50 kg cement.

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast RP264 should be measuredby means of an accurate and recommended dispenser. Themeasured quantity of the admixture should be added directlyto the mixer at the same time as the mixing water. Under nocircumstances should Conplast RP264 be added to the drymix. If mixing water is added in more than one stage, addConplast RP264 in the last stage.

Conplast SP337 is based on a blend of specially selectedorganic polymers. It is supplied as a dark brown liquid,instantly dispersible in water.

Conplast SP337 disperses the cement particles effectivelyin the concrete mix and hence exposes a larger surface areato the hydration process. This effect is used either to increasethe strength or to produce high workability concrete or reducecement content of concrete or to retard the setting time ofconcrete.

Conplast SP337 is compatible with other Fosroc admixturesbut it is recommended that admixtures if used in combinationare added separately.

Workability : Conplast SP337 can be used to producecollapse slump concrete without reducing the water content.However, minor adjustments to mix design may be requiredto produce flowing concrete to prevent bleeding andsegregation.

Compressive strength : Substantial reduction in the watercontent (10-20%) can result in high early compressivestrength for a constant slump.

Permeability : Reduced water/cement ratio increases densityand improves impermeability. Improved workability facilitateseasy placing and good compaction.

Cohesion/segregation : The possibility of bleeding andsegregation will be reduced because of increase in cohesion.A uniform close textured surface without sand runs or voidscan be produced.

Pumpability : Conplast SP337 will aid pumping of concreteby providing lubrication to cement particles and reducing linefriction.


The optimum dosage of Conplast SP337 should bedetermined by site trials with a specific concrete mix to facilitatemeasurement of effects of workability and strength gain.

As a guide, the rate of addition should be in the range of500ml to 1.5 litres /100 kg cement for high workability concrete.

Dispensing : The correct quantity of Conplast SP337 shouldbe used by means of a dispenser. The measured quantity ofConplast SP337 should be added along with the gaugingwater in the case of batching plants.

Mix design

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast SP432MS should bemeasured by means of a recommended dispenser. Normally,the admixture should then be added to the concrete with themixing water to obtain the best results.


An overdose of double the amount of Conplast SP432MS willresult in an increase in retardation as compared to thatnormally obtained. Provided that adequate curing ismaintained, the ultimate strength of the concrete will not beimpaired by increased retardation and will generally beincreased. The effects of overdosing will be further increasedif sulphate resisting cement or cement replacement materialsare used.

Over dosage may also cause increased air entrainment,which will tend to reduce strength. The degree of this effectwill depend on the particular mix design and overdose level.

For microsilica concrete where a high amountof water reduction and slump retention are required, trialsneed to be carried out to arrive at the correct dosage, as thedosage may increase upto 2.0% or even upto 2.5% by weightof cement depending on mix design and performancerequired.

Description

Depending on the rate of application the depth of exposurecan be 4 to 10mm on the concrete surface.

Timber formwork should be sealed with Reebol Formcote,shutter paint, to avoid absorption of Conplast SR. Formworksand moulds must be clean and dry before application.Alternatively 2 coats of Conplast SR on absorbing surfacesshould be given for effective performance.

Conplast SR must be applied in one even coat using a spray,brush or roller. Coverage rate is 8 - 12 m2 / litre.

The material should be stirred well before use.

Before concrete is placed in moulds, the surface retardershould be dry. This typically takes 15 to 60 minutes dependingon ambient conditions. Immediately after the concrete mouldsare stripped, the retarded surface of the concrete can beexposed either by brushing and / or water washing.

Water washing should be carried out using a high pressurewater jet at 5 - 10 N/mm2 pressure. A wire brush shall beused to brush off the loose material.

To bring out the full colour of the aggregate for decorativefinishes, the concrete face shall be washed with diluteReebaklens, multipurpose cleaning agent.

Cleaning

All tools and equipment shall be cleaned with waterimmediately after use.

Description

Conplast UW is a chloride free water soluble polymersupplied as a fine off-white powder. Conplast UW producesa gel in the water paste which surrounds cement particles andprotects them from washout.

Properties


Compacted bulk densityof the powder : 0.55 - 0.65

Compatibility with cements : Conplast UW can be usedwith all types of Portland cements and pozzolans. Foradvice on special cements, consult Fosroc.

Compatibility with other admixtures: Conplast UW is notgenerally compatible with other types of admixture. It has beenformulated to give good workability and the additional use ofa plasticising admixture is not normally recommended. Incaseit is found necessary to use a plasticiser or other type ofadmixture, Fosroc should be contacted for advice.

Setting times : Stiffening time of concrete using Conplast UWis retarded by approximately 3 to 5 hours at normal dosages,depending on cement and mix characteristics.

Cement washout : Typically, ordinary concrete can exhibit awashout of up to 30% of the fines content. Using Conplast UWin the same mix, this can be reduced to less than 5%.


Dosage : The normal dosage of Conplast UW is 0.6 to 1.0%by weight of cement, but will depend on the cement and sandcontent. Site trials should be carried out to establish theoptimum dosage for the mix to be used.

Overdosing : An overdose of double the recommendedmeasure of Conplast UW will result in an increase in the anti-washout properties, significantly increased retardation andstrength loss of the concrete.

Mix design : Mix proportions should be designed as for acohesive pump mix. A slump of atleast 180mm is typical. Asand content of 40-50% of the total aggregate weight isrecommended. A normal minimum cement content forunderwater placing is 400kg/m3. Site /plant trials should becarried out to determine the optimum mix design and workabilityrequirements.

Mixing : When concrete is made using a forced action ( Powerpaddle ) mixer Conplast UW should be added towards the endof the mixing cycle. It should be added slowly and with care,mixing should continue for a further 1 - 2 minutes.

When concrete is truck mixed Conplast UW should be addedto the concrete after mixing either at the plant if near the site,or at site. Conplast UW should be added slowly into the truck,and mixed for 5 - 10 minutes at high speed. It is essential thattruck mixers used are in good condition. Agitator trucks are notsuitable. When the concrete is truck mixed it may be necessaryto adjust the workability of the concrete after Conplast UW hasbeen added. This may be done with a small amount ofadditional water or the addition of a suitable plasticiser. Theconcrete should be constantly agitated until the moment ofplacing.

Cleaning : Spillages of Conplast UW will gel when in contactwith moisture and should therefore be removed in the dry state.

Dosage

With normal concrete and sand/cement mortar mixes use1 kg of Conplast WP90 Powder for every 50 kg bag of cement.

Hand mixing

1 Measure out the required quantity of sand/aggregatefollowed by the cement.

2 Sprinkle the correct quantity of Conplast WP90 powderevenly over the cement.

3 Mix the dry materials until an even colour is obtained.

4 Add the normal measured quantity of water and mix asusual.

Machine mixing

1. Add the measured quantity of sand/ aggregateinto the drum and mix continuously.

2. Add the cement and sprinkle-in-the correct quantity ofConplast WP90 powder at the same time.

3. Mix the dry materials for at least 2 minutes.

4. Add the normal measured quantity of water and mix tocompletion.

An overdose of double the intended dose of Conplast WP400may result in increased retardation and workability, hencereduce the short term strength development. Long termstrength is unlikely to be affected.


Dosages other than those given on this sheet may be usedto meet particular mix requirements provided that adequatesupervision is available. Compliance with requirements mustbe assessed through trial mixes. Contact the FosrocTechnical Department for advice in these cases.

Compatibility

Conplast WP400 is compatible with Conplast SP432MS*†

when used in the same concrete mix, but should be added tothe mix separately and must not be mixed together prior toaddition. The resultant properties of mixes containing morethan one admixture should be assessed by the trial mixprocedure recommended on this data sheet.

Conplast WP400 is suitable for use with all types of Portlandcements, SRC cements and cement replacement materialssuch as PFA, GGBFS and microsilica.

Dispensing

The correct quantity of Conplast WP400 should be measuredby means of a recommended dispenser. The admixtureshould then be added to the concrete with the mixing water toobtain the best results. Contact the Fosroc TechnicalDepartment for advice regarding suitable equipment and itsinstallation.

Curing

As with all structural concrete, good curing practice shouldbe maintained, particularly in situations where an overdosehas occurred. Water spray, wet hessian or a Concure*† sprayapplied curing membrane should be used.

Conplast WP400 meets the water absorption requirements ofthe European Standard BSEN934-2.

Many variables in concreting materials and conditions canaffect the selection and use of an admixture. Trials should becarried out using relevant materials and conditions in order todetermine the optimum mix design and admixture dosage tomeet specific requirements.

A typical performance example from evaluation studies ofConplast WP400 is included on this data sheet. The valuesquoted are representative of results obtained and are providedas illustrations of the performance.

Because of the variability of concreting materials, the resultsshould only be taken as typical of the performance to beexpected. Results quoted are not necessarily directlycomparable with results obtained elsewhere forConplast WP400 or other products.

Limitations

The use of Conplast WP400 will not make poor quality concretewaterproof. Good concrete practice must be followed at alltimes. Well graded aggregates must be used and a minimumcement content of 300 kg/m3 is recommended. Consult thefact sheet available on the use of Conplast plasticisers inwater retaining structures for further information. Adequatewater bars must be provided between lifts of concrete andfloor bays.

Concrete: Conplast X421IC is recommended for all generalmass concrete work where, due to harsh aggregates, difficultyof compaction or mix control, the risk of porosity andpermeability must be minimised. Eg. Basements, bund walls,tanks, balcony, floor and roof slabs.

N.B.: The minimum dosage is 125ml and the maximum is200ml per 50kgs of cement. If maximum dosage is used aminimum of 15% water should be reduced to ensure no lossin strength. Site trials shall be carried out to arrive at theoptimum dosage.

The required quantity of Conplast X421IC is measured andstir into the first or second bucket of water.

Conplast X421IC water mixture shall be added to the concreteor mortar and mixed thoroughly.

Mixing shall be continued and further water shall be addeduntil the required workability is obtained.

The total amount of water added per mix in the initial batchesshall be maintained for the remaining batches.

Note: Mixes using Conplast X421IC will require much lesswater than normal mixes for the same workability. Waterreduction may be as much as 15% or more. Advantages

Eucoplacant 721 is particularly suitable for self compactingconcrete applications. It gives excellent stability to hydraulicbinder based materials. Eucoplacant 721 limits bleeding,segregation and sedimentation of concrete, mortars andgrouts.

Application Instructions

Eucoplacant 721 can be added into the mixing water or intothe wet concrete. The superplasticizer is addedsimultaneously with the VMA or delayed.

Eucoplacant 721 is totally compatible with the otheradmixtures of Fosroc range.

All normal placing processes of the concrete will have to beadapted to ensure delivery of concrete into moulds andformwork.

For best result, the concrete mix design must be optimised.

Dosage

Eucoplacant 721 is recommended to be used at a dosage of0.05 to 1.0% by weight of cement depending on theapplications. In order to meet some specific requirements ofconcrete, the dosage of Eucoplacant 721 must always bedetermined by trials using the materials and conditions thatwill be encountered on site.

Normally, it depends on the diameter of the coarsestaggregates and the quantity of fine elements (lower than 80microns).

Compatibility

Sprayset SL is suitable for use with all types of ordinaryPortland cements and cement replacement materials suchas PFA, GGBFS and silica fume.

Stiffening and set

Stiffening occurs approximately after 10 seconds. As is usualwith rapid initial acceleration of the cement hydration processthe 28 day compressive strength will normally be reduced byapproximately 25-35 %.

Dispensing and mixing

Sprayset SL is normally introduced directly after the air ring inthe spray nozzle. In order to obtain a consistent supply ofadmixture at the nozzle the delivery system recommended isas follows : a pressure pot operating at 600 KPa deliverythrough a 20mm inside diameter pressure hose controlledby a pressure restrictor and tap.

With the ‘wet process’ significant advantage can be obtainedby using a water reducing admixture such as Conplast P211 toreduce the water content of the mix.
