To improve patient safety, medical device tubing connectors (Luer connectors) for neuraxial applications are changing to meet international design standards. This resulted in the creation of NRFit connectors.

The current design of universal Luer connectors poses the risk of inadvertent misconnections. Replacing Luer connectors, NRFit connectors are 20% smaller in diameter, preventing medical devices meant for neuraxial administration from connecting to devices used for IV, enteral and other applications.

Health care facilities are expected to begin converting in order to meet the ISO standard. California has already taken legislative action by mandating that health care facilities convert to these new standardized products in 2017.
