This will focus on teaching with iPads in the classroom particularly in a setting where iPads are in the hands of every student. Each session will focus on one or two apps with ideas for ways you can use them in your classroom. 2. Great Plains Google Summit – This event is currently sold out but put this on your radar for next year. This event takes place in Lincoln and is all Google training done by teachers who teach using Google tools. It is an intense two days but a great way to get a lot of information on Google at one time. Materi- als will be posted on that site so you can still get lots of information even if you can’t attend. 3. Conferences – The ISTE Conference takes place in San Antonio this year June 23-26 (this event is also sold out). This conference is an incredible experi- ence where all the educational integration and technology gurus from across the globe gather for collaboration and learning. Additionally, NETA is hosting a new conference this year in the fall here in Kearney! The Nebraska Fall Ed Tech Conference will be held October 2-3, 2013 at the Younes Conference Center. Don’t worry, there is still the NETA conference in April as well. It is pretty awesome that Nebraska can host two great educational technology con- ferences so don’t miss out on the opportunity! 4. Social Media – Find out more about social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn. These tools help you connect to people around the world. YOU determine who you follow. Find people that are in the educational technology world and follow them. Those people are sharing ideas, articles and tech tools regularly. If you can’t follow all the time, jump on there occasionally. You will always glean something. 5. PLNs, your own Buddy System, and Technology Integration Specialists All of us have someone or a group of coworkers at our schools that we com- municate with on a regular basis. Talk with them about new ideas or technolo- gies that you want to try out. Creating your own “buddy system” sets you up for collaboration, sharing and troubleshooting lesson ideas or technologies. Some schools are hiring technology integration specialists. This person will be available to help you instructionally and technically. They will also help you plan projects and work through the kinks before you introduce it to students. These are just 5 opportunities that are available to any teacher in the ESU 10 area. What other opportunities are available to you and your colleagues?

5 Tech Professional Development Opportunities Available to YOU!You probably figured out in your first week in education, you are in charge of getting your own professional development. Here are a handful of ways to get technology professional development here in Nebraska.

1. ESU 10 1:1 iPads in the Classroom Summit – Register on ODIE for this regional training done by the Technology Integration Specialists in the area. This will focus on teaching with iPads in the classroom particularly in a setting where iPads are in the hands of every student. It is an intense two days but a great way to get a lot of information on Google at one time. Materi-als will be posted on that site so you can still get lots of information even if you can’t attend.

3. Conferences – The ISTE Conference takes place in San Antonio this year June 23-26 (this event is also sold out). This conference is an incredible experi-ence where all the educational integration and technology gurus from across the globe gather for collaboration and learning. Additionally, NETA is hosting a new conference this year in the fall here in Kearney! The Nebraska Fall Ed Tech Conference will be held October 2-3, 2013 at the Younes Conference Center. Don’t worry, there is still the NETA conference in April as well. It is pretty awesome that Nebraska can host two great educational technology con-ferences so don’t miss out on the opportunity!

5. PLNs, your own Buddy System, and Technology Integration Specialists All of us have someone or a group of coworkers at our schools that we com-municate with on a regular basis. Technology Tips for Teachers

For my last T3 article I thought I would end with a Top 10 list. Many of the tools on the list have been covered in past articles, but I thought it would be a great way to recap the last two years with T3.

Number 10: TwitterAs a communication tool Twitter is awesome. One of the best examples of the power of Twitter is the #nebedchat opportunity. Every Wednesday night during the school year educators get together via Twitter to discuss and share ideas.

Number 9: Microsoft WordI know this is the English teacher in me, but Word is a powerful word processing application. The track changes option is a great tool for editing and feedback.

Number 8: Voice to Text (Google Drive app)I have to thank Deana Stall for this. The option to dictate ideas on the go is a game changer. Instead of letting ideas go and trying to remember them later, I can record them right then.

Number 7: All My FavesIf you want to know about what is new or popular on the net, then you need to visit All My Faves on a weekly base.

Number 6: ScratchScratch is a site that teaches users how to program. Scratch 2.0 allows users to create projects right from the web browser. Alice is a 3D programming option for students who master Scratch.

Number 5: SymbalooI have a ton of bookmarks. Symbaloo allows me to create visual “mixes” of bookmarks that I can share with others.

Number 4: Tellagami appFor creative and easy animated movies, Tellagami is the tool to use. The option to save to the camera roll to use with other apps like iMove, or share on social media makes Tellagami both a fun and educational app.

Number 3: FlickrI love photos. Honestly, there are a number of photo services available. Flickr allows me to upload from my mobile device, create sets, and build connections with others. Maybe the best part is the ability to find photos under Creative Commons license to use in the classroom.

Number 2: AurasmaAurasma is an app / site that al-lows you to add augmented reality to your classroom. You can layer content on any image, like in a book or poster on the wall. It is an exciting way to make content come alive in the classroom.

Number 1: TechnologyOK, I know this seems like a simple number one, but at the moment in our society it is the best representa-tion of the flux we are in. Some of my favorite sites are gone, new apps are being developed, and it took five generations before I even got an iPhone. Yet, when used correctly, technology can enhance our lives in a powerful and lasting way.

Thank you for reading the last two years. I can always be contacted through Twitter at jdog90. Have a great summer.

BMIT Fall WorkshopsBusiness, Marketing and Information Technology Standards

October2013

Last year’s participants at the BMIT Standards Workshops learned about the new middle-level and secondary-level course standards for business, marketing and in-formation technology. The 2013 BMIT workshops will focus on the implementation of these new course standards within the NCE programs of study. Jessica Feimer, Schools Manager for EverFi, will do a short training session on the financial educa-tion simulation called EverFi.

New this year during the afternoon is Bizz Buzz: Idea Sharing. You will hear from several BMIT teachers during three rotational sessions designed to share their curri-cula, lesson plans, program offerings and/or best practice strategies. There will even be a session for FBLA and/or DECA advisers. Area Business Academy directors will also provide updates on dual credit courses and their academy course offerings. You will leave the workshop with new ideas and strategies being used by several of the BMIT teachers in your area.

Please bring two copies of your business, marketing and information tech-nology course offerings (course title and description and syllabi/outcomes). During the morning session, teachers will be asked to share their offerings in a group setting with one copy being submitted for use by the Nebraska Department of Education.

All secondary and postsecondary business, marketing and information technology teachers as well as preservice business education college students and student teach-ers are encouraged to register for a date and location that works best for you. Guid-ance counselors, administrators and/or curriculum specialists are welcome to attend.

In order to plan for enough resources and meals, please register online at www.educa-tion.ne.gov/nce/ConferencesWorkshops.html two weeks in advance of the workshop. Each person attending must register by identifying the workshop location he/she plans to attend. See the BMIT web site - Workshops for complete details.

The six October 2013 workshops offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be facilitated by Bonnie Sibert and Bev Newton of the Nebraska Department of Education who are partnering with Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) and postsecondary educators to offer these top-notch professional develop¬ment opportunities.
