A newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers March 2016 From The President & CEO Orange Regional has become a major resource for quality healthcare and a substantial economic driver for our community. Our continued growth is necessary to serve our community in many ways. Essential to our growth is fundraising. Recently, the Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation launched their newest capital campaign called “The Future is Orange”. This campaign is in place to help us fund our new Physician Office Building and the expansion of our Cancer Center, both under construction. “The Future is Orange” capital campaign has a goal of $3.3 million dollars. In just a few short months the Foundation has raised nearly $1 million which includes the generosity of nearly 200 employees. The employee campaign phase of this fundraising effort has a goal of obtaining 500 gifts from hospital employees. My sincere thanks to those who have pledged. If you are thinking about making a donation please know we appreciate any contribution you can afford. We are asking you to consider a gift that you feel good about. We believe our employee participation goal of 500 gifts is very attainable. Gifts large and small will help to ensure the success of “The Future is Orange” and we hope you will consider supporting your hospital. Here is how you can help: • Make a gift today- large or small, all gifts count and are tax deductible and recognized with a thank you letter and names listed on an employee campaign donor wall. • Encourage your fellow colleagues to make a gift. Nothing is more powerful than saying “I made a gift and hope you will, too.” • Help to raise the percentage of participation in your department by encouraging a presentation by a Foundation staff member. If you would like to make a donation or need more information please contact the Foundation office at 333-2333. Thank you! everyone who contributed to getting both offices back up and running and for managing patient care. Emergency preparedness is important and key in effectively managing an unexpected emergency. Please ask your leader where you can find your emergency preparedness plan.

Grateful Patient, Mrs. Iberger, with her Physical Therapist, Luz Ricardo, celebrated with lunch for all her caregivers on the day of her discharge from the Rehab Unit. While still in recovery, Mrs. Iberger wrote to the staff that cared for her:

“I am pleased to share with you that it has been almost three weeks since my discharge and I feel like a new person. I believe my recovery is directly related to the quality of care that this team provided. It would mean a lot to me if you could share this note with the staff.”

March is a Child Life MonthChild life specialists are trained professionals with expertise in helping children and their families overcome life’s most challenging events.

Armed with a strong background in child development and family systems, child life specialists provide emotional support for families, and encourage optimum development of children facing a broad range of challenging experiences, particularly those related to healthcare and hospitalization. With the understanding that a child’s well-being depends on the support of the family, child life specialists provide information, support and guidance to parents, siblings, and other family members. We also play a vital role in educating caregivers, administrators, and the general public about the needs of children under stress. For more information on Child Life Services, please contact Child Life Specialist, Michele Ferguson at 333-5150 or [email protected].

On Nursing Congress Day, our nurses were

able to evaluate Workstations on Wheels, also known as WOWs, and provide feedback

on how to improve their effectiveness. Three WOW vendors were on site to present

their company’s equipment. About 85 nurses evaluated the WOWs as part of their

employee engagement plan, focusing on the Gallup Survey question “my opinion seems to count” and all input from the nurses will be considered as the Information

Technology Department purchases new WOWs. For more information, please contact Director Nursing Informatics and Decision Support, Maureen Donnelly, at 333-2132 or [email protected].

Orange Regional clinical staff performed mock treatment on the SIM Man 3G patient simulator during a full-day training course for the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) provided at the Medical Center on March 4. The simulator allows staff to practice their ability to treat a variety of patient situations nurses encounter in a live, real time setting. According to Dr. Murali Krishna, Orange Regional Medical Group's Pulmonary and Critical Care Attending Physician, the simulator is also used for dedicated Code Blue and Rapid Response Team training.
