The Magnet Recognition Program ® recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Increasingly, consumers are relying on Magnet designation as the ultimate credential for high quality nursing. On April 1, 2015, we submitted our Magnet document to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA). This particular document was so stellar that it will be showcased this year at a National Conference for Nurse Executives in Phoenix in which thousands of nurse leaders and hospital administrators will see it. The submission of this document and its outstanding review is a major accomplishment in a very long and difficult application process. Magnet designation is accomplished through inspiring leaders, empowering clinical nurses with a voice, providing them a seat at the decision making table and by supporting them to design evidence-based solutions that lead to excellent outcomes. The application process involves writing exemplars on more than 70 standards; submission of a Magnet document; a review of the document by ANCC nurse examiners and a three-day site visit. In February 2013, after approval from the Board of Directors, Orange Regional officially embarked on the journey to nursing operational excellence by pursuing Magnet designation. The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice.

Increasingly, consumers are relying on Magnet designation as the ultimate credential for high quality nursing. On April 1, 2015, we submitted our Magnet document to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA). This particular document was so stellar that it will be showcased this year at a National Conference for Nurse Executives in Phoenix in which thousands of nurse leaders and hospital administrators will see it. The submission of this document and its outstanding review is a major accomplishment in a very long and difficult application process.

Magnet designation is accomplished through inspiring leaders, empowering clinical nurses with a voice, providing them a seat at the decision making table and by supporting them to design evidence-based solutions that lead to excellent outcomes. Dr. Robert Malacoff has joined the Medical Group as a Board-certified Cardiologist andElectrophysiologist, treating patients at both Catskill Regional Medical Group and OrangeRegional Medical Group.

Dr. Malacoff has been providing exceptional care for more than 35 years. Most recently, he delivered care to patients at Lehigh Valley Heart Specialists in Allentown, PA. In 2012, Dr. Malacoff earned certification from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners and also earned certification as a Cardiac Device Specialist. In 2006, he was certifiedby the American Board of Internal Medicine with added qualification in Clinical Electrophysiology and is also Board-certified in Cardiovascular Medicine.

Dr. Malacoff received his medical degree from Yale University and graduated from the Internal MedicineResidency program at Yale – New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. His research fellowships include Clinical Electrophysiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA and Cardiovascular Medicine at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Malacoff is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and The Society for Cardiac Angiography & Interventions. He has also served as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine for Penn State University at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. Dr. Malacoff is accepting patients and can be reached at the Medical Group office at 333-7575.

Medical Education Update

For the 2015 – 2016 academic year, the Graduate Medical Education Program will have a total of four Emergency Medicine Residents, four Traditional Rotating Internship Residents, four first-year Family Medicine Residents and currently has two (of four) available openings for Psychiatry Residents. Additionally, Dr. AnnaMaria Arias and Dr. David Morcos return as second-year Family Medicine Residents. Starting in July, the medical education program will also include 24 third-year medical students and 15 fourth-year medical students from Touro College. Orange Regional Medical Center was honored at the United Way of Orange and Dutchess County’s Annual Dinner. GHVHS Administrator of Marketing & Public Relations, Rob Lee, accepted our Leadership Award for Orange Regional’s continued support in raising funds for the United Way. Many thanks to all those who contribute every year to our United Way initiative. Special thanks to Orange Regional’s United Way Committee Members: Rob Lee, Lauren Kropf-Zuckerman, Marcy Manheim, Dominique Mohansingh, Natasha Mele, Nancy Harney, Regina Toomey Bueno, Nicole Nathaniel and Tracey VanPelt.

More than 300,000 Medical Laboratory Professionals conduct more than 10 billion tests per year, performing the crucial tests and analyses that physicians use to make diagnoses. At Orange Regional, our Laboratory staff is responsible for drawing blood, examining blood and body fluids, tissues, cells, the identification of microorganisms and matching blood for transfusions and more. Every lab employee plays an integral part in the patient’s care and works tirelessly behind the scenes. We celebrated the Laboratory for their continued work during Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, which was April 19 – 25. Thank you for your commitment to quality patient care.

The Diagnostic Imaging Department at the Orange Regional Medical Pavilion was recognized by the Outpatient Experience Transformation Team for achieving Honorable Mention status for 4th Quarter 2014 with the Highest Percentile Ranking of 61%.

Mary Lubniewski, PT, CLT, successfully completed a certification training program with the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy. She has exemplified competency and proficiency in the techniques of Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy. This program will be an asset to our Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation (STAR) Program as well as our comprehensive oncology service line. We are now one of just a few facilities that offer Lymphedema services from a Certified Lymphedema specialist. Mary can be reached at 695-8731.

NewsworthyOn April 10, the Orange Regional Medical Executive Committee, and others, honored Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jim Oxley, for his induction into the West Point Army Hall of Fame by roasting him at a special event held at West Hill Country Club. More then 60 people were in attendance for the good nature joking that took place. Congratulations once again, Dr. Oxley!

An article highlighting Orange Regional’s NeonatalIntensive Care Unit Resource Room appeared in the

March 3, 2015 issue of the Times Herald-Record.

The February/March 2015 issue of MD News featuredmore than a dozen recent Orange Regional and GHVHSannouncements including the additions of Dr. JenniferVazquez-Bryan, Jill Embler and Ann Wanderling to our staffand the promotions of Will Scheuermann, Marisol Ortiz,Jessica Gerlach, David DeLong and Dana Hendrickson.

Outpatient Services Health FairOn Saturday, March 21, Orange Regional hosted an outpatient services health fair at the Galleria at Crystal Run, in Middletown. At the fair, employees provided free health assessments, blood pressure screenings and Reiki therapy sessions. Volunteers, staff and medical experts from various departments at Orange Regional met the public, offering educational information and resources for various healthcare services. Outpatient Services Health Fair Magnet Document Submission Celebration

Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services, Joanne Ritter-Teitel and the Nursing Leadership team celebrated the April 1st submission of the Orange Regional Magnet document, ultimately our goal to become a magnet designated hospital. Consumers rely on Magnet designation as the ultimate credential for high quality nursing. Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Magnet is the leading source of successful nursing practices and strategies worldwide. Hospitals designated with Magnet status provide quality patient care and nursing excellence and do so through innovations in professional nursing practices.

No One Dies Alone Program UpdateOn December 31, we launched our No One Dies Alone Program (NODA). The purpose of this program is to provide compassionate companionship when a patient is expected to die within 24-72 hours and they are alone; having no one to be with them. We currently have 43 trained Compassionate Companions (employees,volunteers and clergy) who have attended training and volunteer to spend time with the patient to provide companionship so they are not alone. Volunteers sign up for 2 hour blocks of time. We have received seven referrals and vigils have been activated with four patients. A No One Dies Alone vigil is activated by the patient’s nurse or doctor with the following criteria: 1. The patient is within 24-72 hours of death 2. The patient has a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order 3. The patient is on Comfort Care (Palliative Care) 4. Join Team ORMC and Orange Regional’s Heart Walk Committee Chair, Jim Caffrey, at the Tri-County American Heart Association’s 2015 Heart Walk, Sunday, May 3, Lake Welch Beach, Harriman State Park. Orange Regional’s Chief Operating Officer, Jonathan Schiller, is a member of the executive leadership team for this year’s Tri-County American Heart Association Walk. It promises to be a fun day!

Orange Regional welcomed the Goshen High School Chorus to its Main Lobby to perform in our Feel Good Concert Series on April 15.

The Feel Good Concert Series is a new initiative at ORMC to promote all forms of music as an enhancement to the healing environment, as well as to enrich the quality of life for our community.

No One Dies Alone Program Update

During our preliminary site preparations for our proposed medical office building and cancer center, please note the following reminders:

Parking – You must park in designated employee parking lots so as not to inconvenience patients and visitors. Leaders are reminded to park in the gravel temporary parking lot facilitated by an assisted-parking vendor. The physicians parking lot has been relocated to the Emergency Room parking area and is clearly signed. Preliminary Site Work – Excavation continues on the North hill in preparation for the new parking lot expansion. Fencing has been installed around the main work site. Underground fiber optic cable, electricity and water lines are also being rerouted. Trenching will be done, as needed, a section at a time to minimize disruption of traffic.

Outpatient Entrance Closes – Effective May 4, 2015, the Outpatient Entrance will close permanently. All foot traffic will enter through the Main Lobby. All patients and visitors will be greeted and directed to their destination. Cardiac Rehab Relocates – On May 4, 2015, Cardiac Rehab Services will be relocated to conference rooms 5 & 6 on the Ground Floor. Cardiac Rehab patients will park in the Conference Room Center parking lot and enter through the Conference Room Center Entrance. If you have specific questions related to our preliminary site preparation, please speak with your leader.

Congratulations to Mary Struk, RN, 2 North, a recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Mary was nominated for her desire to continuously go above and beyond in giving the best care possible to all of our patients. Her nomination describes her as a passionate advocate for her patients, as she always recommends medications or treatments necessary to provide comfort to them. Additionally, Mary continuously looks to identify the source of her patient’s anxiety and does what it takes to relieve it. Her clinical skills are valued and she shares them freely. She also enjoys mentoring our student nurses from various colleges. Along with being an extraordinary nurse, Mary is a great team player. She never hesitates to lend a helping hand when needed, whether it means staying beyond her shift or volunteering to drive a fellow employee home after a long day at work. Mary is an exemplary nurse who always brings a smile with her to work, and gives hope to her patients when they need it most.

Congratulations to Deborah Kippel, RN, Infusion Center,a recent recipient of the DAISY Award for ExtraordinaryNurses. Deborah was nominated by a co-worker for going above and beyond every day for her patients, for her fellow co-workers and for Orange Regional. “She treats others with mutual respect, compassion, honesty, fairness and above all brings laughter to all especially to those patients that really need it the most,” said one co-worker. One great tradition created for patients and one great one is the Bon Voyage song when oncology patients complete therapy. The staff sings to patients to boost morale to other patients by this send off. One recent patient, who passed away while on 2 North, was also a favorite long time patient from Infusion Therapy. Debbie heard that he was on comfort measures and that we needed to say goodbye to him. She went to visit the patient and sang to him the Bon Voyage song. All of her patients become family to Deborah and that is what makes her one of the most compassionate, extraordinary nurses.

Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties’ Annual Gala.

On March 18, Orange Regional participated in Y2Kids, a day of hands-on, interactive career exploration activities geared for middle school students, their parents and teachers for the purpose of jumpstarting kids into developing career interests. Several departments participated including Nutrition and Food Services; the Orange Regional Family Program for Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency; Laboratory Services; Emergency Medicine; Trauma; Orange Regional Medical Group and Marketing & Public Relations. was co-presented by the Nutrition and Food Services and Security Departments and sponsored by the Orange Regional

Auxiliary. A great time was had by all; featuring delicious food offerings, a craft area and appearances by both the Easter

Bunny and our own Hudson, mascot for the Pediatric Program. The event was sold out and raised $2,993.
