DATES TO REMEMBER

A Note from your President….

I have heard a rumor that fall is on the way and I will tell you that I am so excited! I have enjoyed summer but I do so enjoy the changing seasons.

We have had a pretty exciting year in FCE. We were the host to members at the NAFCE confer-ence in Memphis. We had 17 members and 2 agents that attended. It was an exciting time with lots of educational classes. I hope you have registered for State Conference in Murfreesboro, Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The registration packet is available online at tafce.org. If you do not have a computer, ask your agent to download it for you or ask any state board member for more infor-mation. I look forward to the next two years, as my first year has been a “learning” year. I could not have done my job without the support of such a wonderful group of women as we have on the State Board. We have an amazing group of members across the State and I look forward to getting to know more of you in the future. I would like to thank each of you that has called and/or emailed about my parents. They have never had to go to doctors in the past but are making up for it now! I find they are not really good patients but then, who really is! We hope Mom will be back to her spunky self soon and she and Dad will be able to join us at the State Conference. Hello Everyone!

Well, sadly, this is the last edition of The Connection The Connection The Connection The Connection I will be pre-paring. I have truly enjoyed it!

This is also my last year as VP for Programs and I will sincerely miss serving on the TAFCE State Board. I served 2 years as Secretary and was asked to serve as VP for Programs because we could not find a candi-date by the deadline. So by the end of 2016, I will have been on the State Board for 5 years...I think that is enough for a while! But, like I said earlier, it has been a real joy.

I encourage you to get involved on the State level in some capacity and you will see that this is where you can help “make things happen” for the betterment of the organization. Thank you for allowing me to serve you.

We received one nomination for Vice President for Programs by the August 1st deadline and one application for the Secretary position AFTER the deadline. This means the person running for Secretary will be “nominated from the floor” at the Business Meeting on Tuesday, November 1st.

At the National FCE meeting in Memphis, TN this year I was nominated and elected to serve for 3 years as the Atlantic Region Public Policy Coordinator. This is an exciting and new level of involvement for me in fce. I am looking forward to the challenge!

I hope to see all of you at the Annual Confer-ence in Murfreesboro….in costume!

VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS FCL! FCL! FCL! FCL!

We had the most wonderful FCL classes in August. There were 12 classes taught with 10 teachers, and 19 students par-

ticipating. Seven students received their 30 Hour Certificates. Congratulations to: Barbara McCarthy, Barbara Olinghouse, Glenda Palmer, and Evelyn Richard-son from Central Region. Carolyn Thomas, Tammie Hoag, Jonna Jusko from Eastern Re-gion. Hope to see everyone at the TAFCE con-ference in Murfreesboro for graduation. Our next FCL classes will be held in April 2017. I have received a Best of the Best applicant from each region. Each one of you is the “Best of the Best” across Tennessee and it's a honor to know you. The winner will be announced during the Annual TAFCE Conference in Murfreesboro. CVU'S have come in from all three regions. Everyone has been busy volunteering their time to outstanding causes. Look for your county and name in the conference program. Looking forward to 2017, FCE and You!

EASTERN REGION EDUCATIONAL CHAIR

Ashlyn Blair is our Scholarship winner and the University has received her 1st scholarship pay-ment. In January 2017, the 2nd payment will be sent. She has received an invitation to the TAFCE Banquet and at that time we will have the pleasure of meeting her and giving her our congratulations!

The Creative Writing entries are with the judges and it will be exciting to hear who our top Tennessee writers are! We will have another painting from the same artist for the booklet cover this year.

It has been my pleasure serving these two years as the Educational Literacy chair. It has been a learning experience and I have made new friends statewide. Thank you!

Fifteen TAFCE Board Members and UT Staff answered the roll call for the August 15-16 meeting in Leba-non, TN.

A NAFCE Conference report was given citing 17 Tennesseans that traveled to Memphis for the Conference. Charlene Budd will be going off the board as her three year tenure as Treasurer is up. Wanda Briddelle will go off the Board having served as the Atlantic Public Policy Coordinator for three years. Phyllis Narus was elected Atlantic Region Public Policy Coordi-nator for the next three years.

The Spirit of Tennessee Luncheon table decora-tions and favors were coordinated by Patty May-hall who welcomed the group to Tennessee.

Phyllis Narus and Emily Gordon served on the On Site Committee. Kay Baker coved the Sales and Silent Auction Room. The attendees were intro-duced to the three new Hearth Fire series and the three new FCL Leader Lessons. Tennessee had a strong presence at the National Conference!

Dr. Stephenson reported that Tennessee Exten-sion is very strong due to the support each county gives. She said that UT Extension Advisory Council is putting a focus on Volunteerism and is working on a plan to support our volunteers on the local levels. The findings of the Council will be reported back to the TAFCE Board in April.

There is lots of excitement surrounding the 2016 Conference in Murfreesboro, Oct. 30—Nov. 2nd. Is your costume dusted off?

Respectively submitted,

...Emily Gordon

Central Region had a successful and fun annual meeting on Sep-tember 8th at the Lane Agri-Park. It was a Hawaiian Luau theme. Our Cultural Arts and Fashion Revue events were held as well.

Planning for the Annual Confer-ence in Murfreesboro at the Embassy Suites on October 30 thru November 2nd has been keep-ing us busy lately.

There are trips to take, places to visit, learning and craft classes to attend and of course, lots of fun!

Our Eastern Region Spring Con-ference was held at the Clyde Austin 4-H Center at Greeneville May 24-26. Phyllis Forsythe, vice president for programs, chaired the event, and the theme was “Celebrating our Tennessee Heri-tage!” Some of the activities

were a Spelling Bee, Dolly Parton Look-a- Like Contest, Scavenger Hunt, Dressing in your UT Colors, and a multitude of Craft Classes. Those attended reported very favorable comments, and the “Wrapped in Love” 2016 project contributed 90 no-sew fleece blankets to Niswongers Chil-dren’s Hospital in Johnson City, TN. Thanks to Phyllis and her committee and all the volunteers for making “FCE Camp” a fun and fantastic experi-ence. The program next year will be held at the Clyde York 4-H Center at Crossville.

CENTRAL REGION REPORT

I am no longer getting excited; I am EXCITED!! Western Region held its Mini-Conference on July 26th and as always I was totally amazed by all the beautiful pro-jects. I really appreciate that Carolyn Simpson emailed me the First and Second Place winners within two days.

Murfreesboro is just over a month away and I can-not wait to see all the beautiful projects from the Eastern and Central Regions. Remember to com-plete the new forms which have 44 categories listed. All the forms should be on the Regional websites and they are on the State website (tafce.org). Please be sure that the item is in the correct category and was completed this year (2016).

I would GREATLY appreciate each Region sending me their 1st and 2nd place winners’ information as soon as possible after their Mini-Conferences. The FINAL deadline is October 1st. Be sure to strongly encourage your Regional winners to enter their projects at State.

Murfreesboro, here we come!

Summer and fall seasons are the dates for county, regional, and state fairs. In east TN there were FCE Days at the Appalachian Fair at Gray Aug. 25 and Sept. 13 at the Tennessee Valley Fair in Knoxville.

Fairs are much more than rides, shows, foods, and games. Many FCE members are involved in the organization of the fair and often conduct educational programs or exhibits at the fair to help educate the public.

On September 26th we will have our Eastern Region Fall Conference at Rothchild Conference Center in Knoxville. This will include recognition for Cultural Arts, Fashion Revue, Creative Writ-ing as well as some other recognition. The theme is “Reminiscing-Back in the Day”. Phyllis Forsythe is chairing the day and pro-grams will be given by Jeff Ashtin, CEO Young Williams Animal Shelter, and entertainment by Cecil and Pamela Thomas.

Plans are beginning to materialize for the 2017 TAFCE Annual State Conference in Knoxville at the Hilton November 5-8. Further details will be announced in the near future by Carolyn Tho-mas, Conference Chair.

I hope each of you have had nice summer! I have enjoyed serving as the Eastern Region President, and I look forward to continued strength and growth of FCE programming on the county, region, and state levels.

The TAFCE-Western Region is spotlighting volunteerism, putting CVUs into action.

Many members volunteered numerous hours this summer to help pull off a great annual meeting. We held our Annual

Mini-Conference on July 26th at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, Jackson, TN, with 167 FCE mem-bers, guests and UT Extension personnel from across the region signed-in. In addition to our Annual Business Meeting, we had our regional Cultural Arts and Fashion Revue competitions, and announced the winners of our regional Creative Writing competition. We also had a Basket Silent Auction to raise money to send participants to FCL training.

Our focus for the day was on Volunteering, spotlighting CVUs. Our guest speaker was Sherry Cole with the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, who gave an eye opening presentation about child abuse and how it can lead to human trafficking. She also told about ways we, as volunteers, can help the center.

Building on the CVU spotlight, the TAFCE-WR Board is asking counties to bring a display board to our January Leadership-In-Action. The display board should be a collage of county members in CVU action, “CVUing!” These volunteer mo-ments will be discussed during ShareTime, a valuable time of sharing ideas across county lines.

Another valuable tool for sharing is our region’s newsletter which can be found on the region’s website, accessed through UT Extension West-ern Region (click on Family). Newsletters are posted at the beginning of each quarter: Janu-ary, April, July and October. Information for the next edition, October’s, needs to be to the West-ern Region President by the second week in Sep-tember. This is a great place for our members to share their volunteer projects.

We encourage all our members to keep up with their volunteer time, and report that valuable time as CVUs and on the State Projects Reports. Keep on CVUing!

50 Great Things About Women Over 50

While searching for something to write for this edition of the TAFCE Connection newsletter,

I ran across this article on the WebMD website. WebMD (www.webmd.com) asked their

readers, as well as a doctor, a clinical psychologist, and a retirement lifestyle specialist, what

they thought the best things were about turning 50. They also added a few quotes from some

prominent authors, including a few crusty remarks from 60 Minutes’ Andy Rooney.

I don’t have enough space to present all 50, but I can give you the overall summarization with a few examples. If

you want to read more, go to WebMD and search for 50 Great Things About Women Over 50 by Jeanie Lerche

Davis.

Women Over 50 Are Freer

“I felt liberated. I felt like I could say what I wanted to say, do things I wanted to do, and wear things I

wanted to wear.”

“We don’t sweat the little things any more – and we’ve learned that darn near everything is a little thing!”

Women Over 50 are Powerful

“Women over 50 are a powerful market force in today’s economy. Women buy 80% of consumer goods

and services, and among the 80 million baby boomers, that’s power.”

“You’ve learned that you can depend on yourself and you are open to new opportunities. You can accept

change, tackle life, and move on.”

Women Over 50 Are Sexy

“Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 50 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.”

Women Over 50 Have More Fun

“You’ve learned to appreciate spontaneous humor, for it gives life a spicy flavor. You laugh a lot, and

laugh out loud. You let the child within you play. You don’t have to be “perfect” because no one is per-

fect.”

“You recognize that talent does not know age. You learn the value of taking risks, pushing your personal

comfort level, reinventing yourself.”

Women Over 50 Know What They Like

“You learn to fuel your life from your inner wisdom, from your soul. Your life only works well if it’s

fueled from what’s really true inside, not from what’s current in magazines.”

Women Over 50 Are Wise

“She knows the value of mentoring. There are younger women out there who want role models. A woman

over 50 has wisdom to offer.”

“When you turn 50, mortality rears its face. Women start looking for their mission in life. The whole

arena of giving back to society becomes their focus.”

Women Over 50 Are Just Getting Started

“A woman over 50 knows the value of celebrating life. She’s sizzling, not fizzling. She’s savvy, not sad.”

“I am loving life and it’s only going to get better.”
