Letter from the president

March 2015

Your Chamber is honored to be invited to participate in some exciting new initiatives that could pay big dividends for the community.

You may have read recently the effort by Alamance Community College to establish a Center of Excellence (CoE). This can be a new or bolstered existing program in which ACC will be a distinguished leader in the field and offering uniquely available training and/or support to an industry sector. The benefit will be in providing Alamance County with “an edge” in competing for industry.

ACC and the Chamber are also partners with ABSS and several local industry partners in an effort to establish a formal apprenticeship program. The program would provide a path for high school students to finish high school and continue their education while also earning an income and gaining specific job skills and experience leading to a guaranteed job offer after completing the program. Careers in manufacturing will only become more demanding of labor to bring a high level of skill and experience to that environment. The benefits will accrue to all the partners including expanded career pathways for students, effective programming from ABSS and ACC, workforce development to meet local industry needs, and another recruiting edge for the Chamber when touting labor in Alamance County.

The Chamber has long been a partner with ABSS in connecting the business community in

support of the school system. For example the Chamber has, for many years, supported the Teacher of the Year program, Classroom Collection, Tours for Teachers, and most recently, served as the community partner sponsoring the Community Vision process. As ABSS transitions from the Vision Plan phase into the implementation phase, the School Board and the County Commissioners have organized a community task force, which includes the Chamber, to work with them to prioritize capital spending needs in the upcoming budget. The benefit should be an efficient use of tax dollars by the school system in the area’s determined by the community to be the priorities.

It is important that the Chamber has been invited by these other important groups to help them achieve their goals. It validates the Chamber’s role as a leading organization in the community and, hopefully, is the kind of engagement, on behalf of the business community, that our members find to be of value.

2014 – A Strong Year for Economic DevelopmentFocus on Readiness 3 is the five-year campaign to fund the Alamance County Economic Development Foundation. 2014 closed out year three of the campaign and inves-tors gathered on a snowy morning February 24th to hear economic development highlights for the year.At last year’s event, Mac Williams, among other local economic development players, was absent from the annual meeting. He was in an undisclosed location work-ing with an undisclosed company about their potential plans for a new facility in Mebane. We now know that Cambro Manufactur-ing in Huntington Beach, California was the destination. Cambro was 2014’s largest project in Alamance County and in just 12 months went from site research and selection to being operational in a new facility in Mebane. Cambro was one of 11 new and ex-panding company announcements in Alamance County in 2014. Those 11 projects announced $80.7 million in capital investment and 562 jobs. Existing companies had some sig-nificant milestones this year as well. In fact, two happened on the same day, Wednesday, November 12th, prompting a visit from NC Governor Pat McCrory. Honda Aero unveiled its first production HF 120 Turbofan jet engine after 7 years of develop-ment and testing in Burlington and a total of 28 years of work on the project. That same day, Sheetz, Inc. cut the ribbon to officially open its Burlington distribution center. A few

months earlier, Honda Power Equip-ment celebrated 30 years of manu-facturing in Alamance County by announcing an $8.5 million expan-sion to add to the over $250 million invested in the local plant over the past 30 years. The Alamance County Economic Development Foundation plays a significant part in the success of companies locating and expand-ing in the county. Not that there is a direct role in every announcement, but private contributions help make for a successful local economic development program. The investors also heard from David Spratley, Vice President for Busi-ness Development with the newly established Economic Develop-ment Partnership of North Carolina. Spratley talked about how the de-velopment staff is hitting the ground running with current projects as well as working on new methods and efforts to identify targets, improve research functions, and be more nimble and flexible in working with companies across the state. And finally, the chamber is only one member of the economic devel-opment team. There are so many individuals and organizations that combine to make a project hap-pen. As part of our program each year, we recognize a member of this economic development team as our Economic Development Impact Award winner. This year, The North Carolina Railroad Com-pany was chosen for being such a key player in efforts to extend rail infrastructure into the NC Industrial Center in Mebane and facilitate a spur to serve Cambro Manufactur-ing.

McPHERSON CLEANERS Receives Award of Excellence from International Drycleaning Association

The Drycleaning and Laundry Institute awarded McPherson Cleaners in Burlington, NC, with the 2015 Award of Excellence in Quality Cleaning and Customer Service. McPherson Cleaners has received the award 11 times since 2005 when the program began.

The Award of Excellence is the premier recognition program for professional members of the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute. To achieve the award McPherson Cleaners must prove it meets rigorous, objective standards in cleaning and service. Most importantly, the company must clean and return a specialized Cleaning Performance Evaluation to prove their cleaning quality is among the best. In addition, the company must successfully

remove six common, but difficult, stains on a silk swatch and return it for evaluation. Continuing education for staff and adherence to a set of customer service principles round out the requirements for consideration for the Award of Excellence.

“The program helps motivate McPherson Cleaners’ staff, inspire innovation, and sustain consumer confidence in the drycleaning industry,” said Mary Scalco, CEO of the Drycleaning and Laundry Institute, a 107-year old trade association designed to help drycleaners improve their businesses.

This prestigious award is given to very few select drycleaning establishments throughout the world that exemplify community service, continuing education, and leadership within the drycleaning industry.

Drycleaning business operators are not required to earn continuing education credits or achieve certification. Therefore, the Award of Excellence promotes educational and professional development to better serve families and communities.

“Receiving the Seal of Approval shows the level of service and dedication that my family and staff commit to the communities we serve,” said Gary McPherson, owner of McPherson Cleaners. “It’s an honor and a privilege to help our customers look their best. We are humbled by this award, but see it as a byproduct of our service, not an end result.”

Founded in 1953, McPherson Cleaners has 2 locations in the Guilford and Alamance

area. For more information on how they can make you look your best, look them up at www. McPhersonCleaners.com

Agriculture Banquet Celebrates Milestone Anniversary

Over 260 guests showed up at Occasions restaurant on Wednesday, March 4 to celebrate the 30th Annual Agriculture Appreciation Banquet. To mark this milestone, the Chamber’s Agri-Business Committee invited Dr. J Earl Danieley, President Emeritus of Elon University, and his son Mark Danieley, Director of the Alamance County Cooperative Extension, to tell their stories of Alamance County Agriculture: Past and Present. The crowd also enjoyed toe-tapping tunes by the traditional bluegrass band Buttermilk Creek.

During the program, awards were given to distinguished members of the agri-business community. First, Davis Farms was honored with the 2015 Soil and Water Conservation District Conservation Farm Family Award, second was Mr. Roger Cobb who received the Service to Agriculture Award. Congratulations to each of these deserving candidates for their contributions to agriculture in Alamance County.

A special thank you to all our event sponsors, door prize contributors, committee members, speakers and Occasions’ staff for making this event memorable. We’re already looking forward to next year’s fried chicken, sweet potatoes and collard greens.

Dr. Danieley and his son, Mark, relive the tales of agriculture’s deep rooted past

through personal memories.

AYLA Eighth Graders Entertain Local LeadersFriday, March 6 marked the 7th Annual Alamance Youth Leadership Academy

(AYLA) 8th Grade Capstone Event. Held at the Alamance Country Club, this event celebrates the 8th grade AYLA students’ commitment to the program as they enjoy the opportunity to have lunch with distinguished guests from our community.

Students representing 8 area middle schools left the denim and athletic wear at home as they arrived on Friday dressed in skirts, bowties, and button ups. During the event, students participated in workshops on etiquette and social conversation skills. They then greeted community leaders and engaged in conversation over lunch, putting their skills to the test. This unique opportunity allows students to enjoy discourse with adults without having any agenda. The students ask the questions, choose the topics, and inevitably impress their guests as they wow them with their knowledge, manners, and overall conduct. As the event comes to a close, students walk away with a new found confidence and the adults walk away with a sense of pride in our students and future leaders.

A special thank you to our event sponsor Alamance County Human Resource Association (ACHRA), and to the program’s sustaining sponsors LabCorp, Glen Raven, Inc. and Leadership Alamance Alumni Association (LAAA). The Chamber would also like to thank all of our community leaders that attended the event, and helped to inspire our youth.
