In the Beginning… In the late 1980s

• Miami-Dade County was experiencing significant growth in outlying western areas

• County Commission sensed urgency in providing transportation linkage

• Called on FDOT to explore – East-West Transportation Corridor expansion– Central facility to link all modes of ground transportation

and decongest airport access roads

MIC History• Congress adopts Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act

(ISTEA) in 1991 laying groundwork for MIC’s creative financing

• FDOT commissions Parsons Brinckerhoff to conduct East-West Corridor Study– FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in September 1998– FDOT turns project over to Miami-Dade Transit & Miami Dade

Expressway Authority for implementation

• FDOT commissions ICF Kaiser to conduct MIC Study – FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in May 1998– Kaiser assets acquired by Earth Tech 2000– Earth Tech acquired by AECOM 2008

What is the Miami Intermodal Center Program?

• Transportation hub for Miami-Dade County & South Florida region

• First program of its kind undertaken by FDOT • Major partners/stakeholders include

– USDOT / FHWA– Miami-Dade County & its transportation

agencies– MDX – SFRTA

Why Do We Need the Program?

• Create connectivity in Miami-Dade County where none existed

• Decongest roads leading to the county’s number one economic generator

those found in various urban areas in U.S.• Provides safe & seamless transportation

connections• Includes numerous roadway

enhancements

roadways to & from airport• Roadway improvements have

enhanced traffic flow on nearby roads & highways
