The Connecting Learning team has considerable experience of designing and evaluating school and classroom layout in relation to its effectiveness upon learning. Colleges, secondary, academy and primary schools have all experienced from evaluating or designing effective learning spaces within existing or planned environments.
With new technologies the way in which young people learn is changing and Connecting Learning has the people who can help you realise the full potential of planning together the design of learning spaces with the technology available. It is vitally important to ensure that the spaces in which young people work and learn each day are as effective in developing leaning as they can possibly be.
Learning Spaces
“Connecting Learning are clearly very passionate, committed and knowledgeable about all aspects of creating and delivering successful schools. As an architect of many
schools, I was struck by their pragmatic approach to my designs - always challenging
and seeking to make the most of capital spend, not to create architectural edifices,
but to maximise value for education.”
Philip Watson, Design Director, AtkinsConnecting Learning work with leaders in schools and academies to:
• Review their current learning spaces and plan for more engaging spaces for learning
• Organise visits to inspiring schools to see how they utilise their learning spaces
• Design workshops for staff and learners to inform design briefs for new learning spaces
• Design and deliver new learning spaces
• Ensure best value is gained from planned learning spaces
• Review impact of spaces in the relation to learning gains
Space review and planning• Are the environments that your staff and learners working in supporting
teaching and learning?
• Reviewing current learning spaces and planning for change, from redesigning small learning zones to preparing for a larger project
Staff and student design workshops• Sharing the latest research on learning spaces and school examples to
promote thinking about learning spaces
• Matching the environment to the curriculum and learning and teaching styles of the school or academy
School and academy visits• Visiting newly designed and remodelled schools to see best practice and how
different learning spaces support teaching and learning
• Learning from school leaders, staff and students experiences of the process they went through to get their new learning spaces and the impact
“The environment in which we provide
learning experiences for our pupils is vital
in maximising their ability to learn and
enhancing motivation and enthusiasm.
Colour and design of spaces; shape, quality
and size of furniture, as well as resources
and visual information that support and
extend learning are key factors to consider
in the design of learning spaces.”
Gareth Dacey, HeadteacherCwmclydach Primary School
“The idea of change – talking about it, or readingabout it – is easy. But actually implementing
change, getting into the process of it, is where mostpeople have trouble. Implementing change is
where the majority of books spend their time; itsthe toughest part of developing a new vision.”
Leadership and Change Management
Connecting Learning recognises how difficult it is to implement change and how the delivery of an inspiring days professional development will not in itself bring about igniting the first steps to change.
Working in partnership with schools and academies Connecting Learning design and deliver effective change management programmes to support in developing those first steps of change. No set professional development programme but your programme to meet your needs and your vision of change.
