Connected-car services are delivered to moving assets on the road and so are in the
natural domain of mobile cellular networks Mobile network operators (MNOs) have long
been providers of SIM cards for aermarket navigaon vehicle tracking and fleet-
management services Now this connecvity is being embedded in the vehicle and module
makers are shipping ruggedized LTE components to producon lines around the world
The inial incenve was to meet the demands of regulaon Europersquos eCall legislaon
requires that new vehicles on the road from 2015 should be capable of triggering an
emergency assistance call in the event of a crash Similarly aer numerous delays Brazil has
implemented its mandate that new cars should feature telemacs for Stolen Vehicle
Recovery (SVR) While narrowband telemacs is essenal for these applicaons the
challenge for the MNOs is to convince the automove industry of the broader business case
OEMs are exploring the benefits of shiing their business models from being highly
product-centric towards a more service-centric approach (see fig) On-board telemacs
help build closer relaonships with vehicle owners even as the car is sold on to new
drivers By provisioning a hardware gateway in the car OEMs aim to win back the customer
relaonship from aermarket service providers and independent garages ndash the automove
equivalent of OTT
