Cowichan Regional Visitor Centre Officially Opened!
Grand Opening a Huge Success
FEB 7 was a great day for tourism with a Round Table Discussion, hosted by Community Futures Cowichan, Economic
Development Cowichan and the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce...we were honoured to have guests
Honourable Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of State for Tourism and Small Business and John Winter, President of the BC
Chamber of Commerce join us for this excellent discussion with Cowichan tourism operators.
But the highlight of the day was the Official Grand Opening of the Cowichan Regional Visitor Centre with over 150
guests joining us for the official ribbon cutting of both the building and the new hand carved entrance door, sponsored
by the Doman family in memory to Herb Doman. There are tons of great photos of the event on facebook. Here is a

We welcomed 550 visitors to the Centre on February 1 during the Pubic Open House!
What a day! We opened our doors on February 1 during the Big Leaf Maple Syrup Festival at the BC Forest Discovery
Centre. Thanks to the Cowichan knitters, The Raptors, Sue Coleman, Cowichan Kayaks and the Cowichan Hiking Club
for contributing to the success of the day. Lots of pictures on facebook and a fabulous short video clip, compliments of

UCBM Special Committee on BC Ferries - Members Requested to Participate in Online Survey
British Columbia local governments have formed a Special Committee to examine the economic significance of BC
Ferries cutbacks and fare increases. The Special Committee has been jointly established by the Association of
Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities and the Union of B.C. Municipalities, along with the Ferry Advisory
Committee Chairs and Coastal Regional District Chairs. The Special Committee will oversee the work of a consultant
who will conduct an analysis to estimate the economic significance of the proposed BC Ferries service reductions on
communities. The first report is expected later this month. The Committee is also interested in your input. Please
follow the link and submit your opinions regarding the ferry system.

Junior Dragon's Den - Sometimes All It Takes to Tame a Dragon is a LIttle Ingenuity - From Community Futures
Community Futures Cowichan and Cowichan Secondary School have teamed up to offer young entrepreneurs a fun
contest to test their business savvy! Inspired by the popular TV program, the contest has many of the same exciting
factors. The goal is to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit of Cowichan teens by providing them with the opportunity to
be "hands-on" with their business skills and ideas in a fun and interactive format. Teams compete in a three step
process and participants must demonstrate skills in Product/Service Development, Marketing, and Finance. The final
event is in May, when a winning team will be determined by the judges. Chamber members are encouraged to
participate as Mentors - to support these enthusiastic young people and have fun.
