The concert was held at All Saints Church in the centre of Oakham and around 300 visitors came to watch the students perform in a variety of festive items, including both music and drama. The evening started with the Chamber Choir performing a stunning rendition of Silent Night. The three soloists were Georgina Harries, Nirvana Allis and Abigail Pearse. Congratulations go to Sophia Frost who conducted the Choir for the very first time. Matthew Pearse opened up the first Christmas carol with a heart-warming solo of Once in Royal David’s City. Matthew was particularly nervous, but performed with true professionalism. The Choir and Orchestra led the congregation throughout the evening in the various Christmas carols. During the evening, 17 drama students performed three Christmas pieces. The first ‘Away with the Manger’ included all the cast and was narrated confidently by Tilly Hall and Nicole Cox. Baa-ing Uncertainties looked at the birth of Christ from the perspective of two sheep (energetically played by Chloe Bullough and Sian Willard). The last piece ‘Bethlehemian Rhapsody’ re-told the Nativity story to the music of Queen! All of the drama pieces were received with much enthusiasm. The ensembles (Reed, Flute, Recorder and Jazz) also contributed wonderfully throughout the evening to ensure the Christmas Concert 2012 was a memorable one! Special thanks goes to Billy Hunt and Poppy Spencer (Head Boy and Head Girl) who compered the evening beautifully.

The drama students had been working on their performance over the past few weeks, brain-storming ideas and creating a play on a Christmas theme. All of the students created their own roles, sourced their costumes and worked together to produce a very entertaining play. James Carter as Old Santa and Francesca Kennard-Kettle as Old Mrs Claus narrated the play. As they looked back at their old College yearbook, memories of how they first met were shown at Christmose College. Charlie Watt played Young Santa, Amber Goddard Young Mrs Claus and the rest of the cast played teachers (Scrooge, The Grinch & Fairy) and students (Reindeer, Easter Bunny, Elves, Christmas trees & Geeks) at the College. Everyone enjoyed the play and some of the audience even had a go at chocolate tasting! Well done to all of the year 10 drama students for a fantastic performance.

On Wednesday the December, Catmose College took part in the annual Rotary Young Chef competition. This year it was held at Casterton Business and Enterprise College with 4 students travelling there to represent the College.

The four students that took part were Francesca Horne (year 10), Emellia Goodburn (year 9), Luke Booth (year 10) and Ellie Loxton (year 10).

The rules of the competition stipulated that students were required to prepare and cook a main course and dessert for two people for under £10.

The dishes that all four students produced were prepared to a fantastic standard. We are delighted, and extremely proud to report that we took home 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. All students that took part were true ambassadors of the College.

Ellie Loxton took first place with a fried fish curry and pomegranate and amaretto trifles.

Luke Booth meanwhile took second place with peppered chicken, chorizo with home made tagliatelle for main course and pear tart with a rich chocolate sauce for dessert.

Francesca Horne came third with lemon chicken on a bed of rice for main course and rich sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce for dessert.

The Rotary Club judges commented on how all four students produced such highly skilled dishes. They were particularly impressed with Emellia and Luke’s pasta making, as well as Francesca and Ellie’s sauce making.Well done everyone!

LIQUID NITROGEN AFTERNOON

As part of Liquid Nitrogen Day, Professor Paul Cullis, Dr Corey Evans and three postgraduate students from the University of Leicester demonstrated some of their Liquid Nitrogen experiments to our year 7 class.

For the first part of the afternoon we went down to the theatre where Dr Evans revealed some of the properties of liquid nitrogen. My favourite demonstration was when Dr Evans put a banana in the liquid nitrogen and it turned completely solid. Dr Evans placed a nail on the table and started to see if it would be useful as a hammer. He succeeded; the banana was that hard he was able to smack a nail into the table. Dr Evans explained to us that liquid nitrogen boils at -1960C and has lots of useful applications, including being used to preserve specimens and remove warts!

My favourite part of the afternoon was making the ice cream. You could choose from two flavours, chocolate, strawberry or a bit of both. It was amazing to see how the mixture solidified as we added the liquid nitrogen to the mixture. The ice cream made was really smooth and creamy, which was due to the rapid freezing, as this caused small ice crystals to form.

I would like to say a special thanks to all of the visitors from the University of Leicester, who made this an afternoon to remember.

PING PONG EXPERIMENT

Ever wondered what happens when you mix liquid nitrogen and 750 ping pong balls?

As part of a recent science lesson examining the effect of pressure on the rate of a reaction, we watched a science experiment in the sports hall which involved liquid nitrogen.

It worked by pouring a few inches of liquid nitrogen into a plastic bottle and firmly screwing the lid on tightly. As it was poured it was exposed to room temperature and therefore began to evaporate as it has a very low boiling point. When the container was closed it allowed the pressure to build up inside the bottle. Straight after this occurred, around 750 ping pong balls were tipped into a bin containing some warm water (to speed up the reaction), the bottle filled with the nitrogen was them thrown in.

Eventually, the pressure of the bottle got too great and it exploded, sending a pummel of ping pong balls into the air with a bang as loud as a gun firing.

Overall, it was a really fantastic experiment to watch and fascinating to study and we would like to thank everyone for making it possible - especially the cleaners!

PRIMARY BASKETBALL

Over 100 primary school students came to Catmose College for a basketball taster session before their level 2 competition next year. Some of our year 10 sports leaders delivered their first sessions in dribbling, shooting and passing before the students went into small sided games. They were praised by the coach from England UK, Alistair Wilson, and primary school teachers for their maturity and standard of leadership. The leaders had to practice the delivery of the session and prepare the equipment during their Sports Leaders lessons the previous week and are now fully aware that preparation and organisational skills are so important to success.

Congratulations to the leaders for their achievement on the day.

Next week some other leaders will have their opportunity to use the skills that they have learnt to deliver an indoor athletics sessions to over 100 primary students.

Mrs Powell & Miss Stillman.

PRIMARY INDOOR ATHLETICS

Invited to Catmose College were over 180 primary school children who were taking part in an indoor athletics schools competition to give students not only the opportunity to attempt some indoor events but also to choose a school to go through to the next round of the school games competition. Our sports leaders from year 10 and 11 helped deliver the event, recording measuring and timing. They contributed to an excellent afternoon of sport in which all who took part had a wonderful time. The students will be logging their hours towards the Level 2 Sports Leaders Award.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the event so successful.

INDOOR ATHLETICS

On Tuesday 11 December we travelled to Longfield for the indoor athletics competition to select a team to represent the area at Loughborough University on the 22 March. It was a very competitive event against Longfield, John Ferneley, Casterton and Uppingham but we were determined to win all four age groups as last year the year 7 girls lost to Uppingham by only a few points.

The afternoon started with the field events, with competitors competing in the shot, long jump, triple jump, speed bounce and vertical jump. After which students competed in a variety of track events involving 2 lap up to 6 lap races. The students were extremely supportive of one another and determined to win their selected events. The year 8 boys dominated the track winning all of their track races bar one in which they came third, which was a fantastic achievement.

We were delighted when we were told that the year 8 boys and girls, and year 7 girls won the competition and year 7 boys come joint first with Casterton. Next term we will have a year 7 boys competition to see which team goes through to the next round.

Training will continue on Fridays 3.30- 4.45pm, starting on Friday 11 January, the first full week back to school after Christmas Congratulations toA Hibbitt T WoolhouseR Richardson A LucasJ Worthington Z ChiezC Lysandrou C AllmanC Kirk G WhittimoreB Higgins E R TownB Buckby H Emison B Boulton Smith Z SmithDan Cousins A SavilleZ Kernard Kettle H KirkB Johnson Y PourmazafariT Dryell A KirbyW Cregan R SmithA Brewis C EdensS Jones J Curtis

CROSS COUNTRY

On Saturday 8 December we travelled to Melton to compete in the last of the county cross country competitions. The event had been changed to the Country Park in Melton and proved to be an extremely challenging hilly course.

In the year 7 age group Alice Lucas came 9th and Ben Higgins 5th which were two excellent performances and once again they are in the top 10 in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the Junior age group Chelsea Lucas came 15th, Amy Saville 36th and Will Cregan 56th. The girls had to run 2 miles and the boys 3 and they were all pleased that they could wear their spikes!!!

Christian Brookes should be proud of his 27th position in the Inter boys competition over a 4½ mile course.

Next year our hope is to have more students competing so that we can enter a team for each age group.

Thank you to parents for their support in getting students to the venues and Happy Christmas to you all.Mrs Powell

SNOW . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .In the event of severe weather we will make every effort to keep the College open and to continue as normal. However, in extreme circumstances this may not be possible and emergency procedures may have to be adopted and your child will be sent home. It is wise to be prepared as we will not be able to notify you in advance.

Information will be given as soon as possible on Rutland Radio on 107.2, 97.4 FM, the College facebook page and the College website. This will usually be by 7.30am.

If conditions allow, your child should set off for the College as normal but you should be prepared for two eventualities.

If you are dependent on a bus and roads are not clear, buses may not run and your child will need to return home.

If your child does arrive at the College and we are facing extreme circumstances, such as an unsafe site or not enough staff able to reach the College to safely look after students, we may have to close and your child will be sent home. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD KNOWS THE NUMBER TO USE TO CONTACT YOU DURING THE DAY.

Extreme weather during the day

In the event of extreme weather we may have to send some or all students home early if the bus companies advise it due to the state of the roads.

PLEASE DISCUSS WITH YOUR CHILD WHAT PROCEDURE YOU WILL ADOPT IF, IN AN EMERGENCY, HE OR SHE HAS TO BE SENT HOME.

Our main aim is to ensure the safety of all students. Please make sure your child knows where to go if you are unlikely to be at home.

NO CHILD SHOULD LEAVE THE COLLEGE IN AN EMERGENCY IF THEY HAVE NOWHERE TO GO OR IF YOU CONSIDER IT IS UNSAFE FOR THEM TO TRAVEL HOME.

If we have to send students home, we will tell students who cannot return home for any reason to go to the restaurant where they will remain in the College under supervision.

If you are unable to look after your child in an emergency or you think it is unsafe for them to travel home, you should tell your child to remain in College.
