The Conlon houses and farms were confined to two of the four sections. But it is of course possible that Conlon females married partners in the other sections. Summary of Starting Information:

Patrick Conlon born circa 1846 – 1847 in Tooromin, Bohola parish son of Patrick Conlon and Mary

Mulroy …

Genealogical Sources:

• Bohola RC parish, records of marriage and baptisms both of which commenced in 1857.

• Killdan (Kiltimagh) RC parish records of baptisms which commenced in 1861 and marriages

which commenced in 1835.

• Civil records of births, deaths and RC marriages, which commenced in 1864.

• Census of 1901.

• Gravestone Inscriptions.

• Tithe Applotment Book compild in mid-1830s (contains no relevant records).

The townland of Tooromin:

The townland of Tooromin contains 509 acres and in 1856 contained twenty four houses and a school

house. The townland was at that time owned by Charles Burke Jordan (probably of Rathslevin).

Earlier, in 1838, the townland was the property of Joseph McDonald Esq. and let to 23 tenants on

leases of lives. The farms ranged in size from 5 to 10 acres. The soil was described as moory with

plenty of bog. The crops grown were oats, potatoes and flax. The tenants were all Catholics and the

prevailing names were McNicholas and Conlan.1 The townland was let in four sections varying in size

from 97 to 159 acres. These sections were known locally as Bailehall, Bailegruingh, Cregaun and

Bailefewl.2 Each section was jointly rented by a number of tenants who would have farmed it in

proportion to the percentage of the rent they paid. This method of tenanting land was known as

‘rundale’. Tenants who rented in this way usually co-operated with each other in the labour-intensive

tasks of sowing and harvesting. It is probable that the townland was originally leased by four

individuals and as the population increased in the late 1700s and early 1800s the sons and daughters of

these individuals built houses and took a share of the rent when they married and started to live

independently of their parents. The Conlon houses and farms were confined to two of the four

sections. But it is of course possible that Conlon females married partners in the other sections.

In 1856 there were seven Conlan households in Tooromin. These were headed by:

Name (Approx. Year of Birth - Year of Death) Holding

Thomas Conlan (1812 – 1872) Land and house

John Conlan (1783 – 1865) Land, house and office

Timothy (“Thaddaus” Conlan (1792 – 1872) Land, house and office

Patrick Conlan (1806 – 1892) Land, house and office

Michael Conlan (1804 – 1885) Land, house and office

Patrick Conlan (probably also Patrick 1806 - 1892) Land, house and office

Martin Conlan (1805 – 1865) Land, house and office

All these Conlan householders were no doubt related in some degree.

Given the number of Conlon households in Tooromin and the surrounding area it is unlikely that they

were descendants of refugees from the north of Ireland who fled to Mayo after the sectarian “Battle of

The Diamond” in the mid-1790s.

The population of Tooromin in 1901 consisted of 34 families containing 178 persons (85 males and 93

females).

“Joe Conlon remembers the time, over thirty years ago, when people who lived in

Tooromeen [sic] were offered land in Westmeath if they left their holdings and let the

forestry foundation take it over. Many families jumped at the offer, and they all left with

their cattle to Shanaghy crossroads, and from there many of them were taken to

Westmeath.

Those who remained, and walked back up to Tooromeen that day, were mostly old people,

and as one woman was heard to comment at the time “They have taken the cream of

Tooromeen away”. The land was then striped and planted with forests. Now when we

look at Tooromeen, it brings to mind the old saying of not being able to see the wood from

the trees.

Today, there are nine families living in Tooromeen, with a total population of 18 people –

9 males and 9 females. The families living there today are: Patrick Joe Conlon, Mike &

Maggie Clarke; James & Annie Moran; Patrick (Dan) Reddington; Agnes and T.J. Roche;

Kevin and Dolcie Fanning & family; Tony Deasy; Ellen McNicholas; and Annie May

Coen”. 3

Search Findings:

In so far as can be established the following is the available genealogical information on Patrick ‘Mór’

Conlon (‘Big’ Patrick Conlon) and his descendants to 1901. It is compiled from compiled from a

combination of church and civil records, the 1901 census returns, information supplied by the enquirer

and (with regard to the Solans) information found on internet websites.

I. Patrick “Mor” Conlon (born circa 1806, died 22 December 1892 aged 86 years),4 married

Mary Mulroy (born circa 1826, died 1 April 1896 aged 70 years)5 and had issue:

A. Patrick Conlon, born circa 1846, emigrated to England before 1875 and married

Mary Elizabeth Ryan, a widow. They had issue:

the, then surviving, census of 1851, stating that he was son of Patrick Conlon and

James O’Regan of Kiltimagh. A search of civil records of death for the Kiltimagh
