Congressman Comes to PoageIn January of this year Dr. Elizabeth Davis, executive vice-president and provost at Baylor University, announced the appointment of former U.S. Congressman Chet Edwards as the W. R. Poage Distinguished Chair for Public Service. Congressman Edwards will serve in a part-time capacity devoting two weeks per semester in residence at Baylor University. At this writing, the 10-term congressman already completed his two weeks in residence for the 2012 spring semester. During the week of February 13-17, Edwards met with seven classes as well as several of the academic deans to explore ways he could interact with their faculty and students in the future. The week of April 16-20 gave Edwards time to

meet with Kevin P. Jackson, vice-president for student life, and various groups of student leaders through the Division of Student Life. Additionally, he spent time with Vice President for Information Technology & Dean of University libraries Pattie Orr, Poage Library Director Ben Rogers and the Poage staff and student assistants.

Congressman Edwards’ office is on the second floor of the W.R. Poage Legislative Library at Baylor. His assistance will be invaluable as the work of processing his congressional papers will begin over the summer and carry into the fall.

Longtime supporters of Poage Library have established endowments designed to provide educational opportunities for students through summer internships and equip the library with archival supplies to process new collections. Forrest and Carol Sue Roberts and Skip and Sarah Dowdy have personally, and through their family foundation, provided funds to establish the Dowdy Family Foundation Poage Legislative Library Internship Endowed Scholarship Fund, part of the President’s Scholarship Initiative. The other is the John V. and Sarah C. Dowdy Poage Legislative Library Endowed Fund.

Poage is home to the papers of former Congressman John V. Dowdy, father of Carol Sue and Skip. Dowdy’s children and their spouses are sustaining members of the Poage Library family, honoring their father and mother with gifts expanding and enriching collections and providing much needed technology that helps us stay abreast of the fast-paced changes in this arena.

DOWDY FAMILY ESTABLISHES TWO ENDOWMENTS

Edwards Delivers Annual Poage Lecture On Tuesday, April 17 Congressman Edwards presented the 2012 W. R. Poage Legislative Library Spring Lecture titled, “What’s Wrong with Washington and Right with America?” Edwards challenged the large crowd of students not to become discouraged by the politics of Washington, but rather to become engaged public servants that can effect change in their communities of influence.

BULLOCK ARCHIVIST SEARCH UNDERWAYBenna Vaughan, who held the position of Bullock archivist for 12 years, became the manuscript archivist at The Texas Collection on February 13. We will miss Benna and wish her all the best in her new position. Her departure leaves Po-age without a processing archivist and a search to fill this need is underway. We hope to introduce the new archivist in our next newsletter.

NASA @ 50: Race to SpaceOn April 12, Poage Library opened “NASA @ 50: Race to Space,” marking 50 years since the speech President Kennedy gave at Rice University. Kennedy said we choose to go to the moon “not because it is easy, but because it is hard.” Several hundred visitors have viewed the exhibit featuring NASA-themed cartoons signed by the astronauts whose missions were illustrated. Helen Newton collected these editorials from the cartoonists while employed at NASA, and astronauts passing by her desk were happy to sign the original artwork. Magazines, newspapers, patches, stamps, books and audiovisual materials were gathered from 10 collections within Poage or from donors. In addition to the NASA items, materials from the former Soviet Union are included as well as a memorial case for astronauts and cosmonauts who lost their lives before or during a mission. Two large panels on the history of space flight and the International Space Station, along with a 1/50th model of the space shuttle, a launch helmet and EVA glove were borrowed from the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Although the NASA items have since been returned, the exhibit will remain up through the summer.

RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE EXHIBITAn exhibit featuring the materials from the John and JD Dowdy Presidential Memorabilia Collection will be displayed in the Poage Gallery early in the fall. This presidential election-year exhibit, a historical look at presidential campaigns, is fast becoming a tradition for the library. If you are unable to visit the library during the week, plan to drop by before 3 p.m. on the Saturday of Baylor Homecoming (Nov. 3) to enjoy the exhibit and refreshments. Revisit the 2008 Presidential election exhibit at: baylor.edu/lib/poage/newsletter

NATIONAL ISSUES FORUMSTANDING COMMITTEE FUNDS INTERNSHIP

POAGE STUDENTS THIS SUMMER

Working with the Kettering Foundation and the National Issues Forum, Poage Library conducted three community forums on the national debt during the school year. The purpose was to demonstrate deliberative democracy and to raise the civility of political discussion. The information gathered during the forums was shared with the Kettering Foundation and compiled into a report with other forums across the country. These findings were presented on April 18 at Kettering Foundation’s annual A Public Voice in Washington DC.

Two of the seven basic findings were:• A civil conversation is possible. Even

when talking about the conflict-ridden topic of the debt, nearly every participant in the NIF forums behaved courteously and treated other participants with respect. What’s more, substantial numbers reported hearing new ideas and reconsidering their own initial views.

• Despite expressed worry among experts and the media that debate on the debt will foment intergenerational warfare, older forum participants often spoke ardently about their fears for younger Americans.

Two of our student assistants graduated in May – Mandi Mizuta (Masters in Church/State Studies) and Vanessa Onguti (Bachelors in International Studies). Mandi will remain in Waco and continue teaching at McLennan Community College while Vanessa heads off to Thailand for a year-long teaching assignment. Congratulations!

Our other student assistants are spending their summer in worthwhile pursuits: baylor.edu/lib/poage/newsletter

BILL HAIR JOINS POAGEThough not new to the Baylor Libraries, Bill Hair is new to the Poage Library. Hair arrived at Baylor in 1994 as the theology & philosophy librarian to serve the departments of religion, philosophy and the newly formed Truett Theological Seminary. Since that time he held a number of positions including associate dean and director of university libraries. Hair started his new duties as associate professor of archival management on February 1, 2012. He will hone his nascent skills as an archivist under the tutelage of Poage Director Ben Rogers. Among Hair’s responsibilities will be organizing the newly acquired papers of Congressman Chet Edwards, assisting with exhibits and learning how to handle electronic records—an increasingly growing segment of archival collections.

Contributions to The Standing Committee are funding a summer intern to assist with exhibits and library promotion. Kyle Beam, a May graduate with a major in journalism and public relations and a minor in film and digital media, has been selected

for summer 2012. Kyle will design banners for our exhibits as well as permanent banners for the large windows in the southern office. He will also create graphics and audiovisual elements for the exhibits. “I am honored to have been selected,” said Kyle. “The generosity of the members of The Standing Committee not only provides me the opportunity for a great internship, but also helps Poage Library continue to present quality exhibits where people discover the library and its resources.” Kyle will begin his graduate studies in journalism at Baylor in the fall.
