My wonderful Trinity family, Thank you so much for your prayers, cards and concern over this past year. I thank God as I greet each new day for the love of family and friends and renewed strength. ~Beryll Ruth

Chris Mervine’s Resignation It is with deep regret that we have accepted the resignation of Chris Mervine as our organist & director of music. We are

so thankful for Chris’s service at Trinity. She has done a wonderful job leading our worship, providing special music, and helping to institute some new things like the Advent Lessons & Carols service.

Chris will begin her retirement with the new year; however, we plan to honor her on Sunday, December 6th with receptions after both services, which will feature all of the choirs. We hope you will join us and wish her well!

Salvation Army Angel Tree Trinity is happy to be able to provide gifts for the children of our Conrad Weiser Food Pantry families or needy children living right here in our community!

If you would like to spread some Christmas cheer to someone, simply remove an “angel tag” from the tree in the narthex. (Tree is now up!!!) Please wrap the gift and secure the angel tag to the top of the package with the information side up. Place under the Angel Tree. The tag has gift suggestions – you do NOT need to purchase everything on the list, and you may want to purchase something that is NOT on the list.

All gifts MUST be returned by Sunday, December 13th.

Thank you once again for participating in this wonderful program and for making this Christmas a joyful one for the families of those less fortunate. A Note from a raffle prize winner… Dear Pastor Weiser, Please accept this gift to the food pantry. I was the most surprised and delighted prize winner in the Jack Frost raffle. I have only recently moved to Wernersville and lost my father just a few short weeks ago. On my way to buy my raffle ticket, I had a feeling that Dad was telling me to get one “for him”. I must say, the windfall was a blessing and so greatly appreciated. Blessings to you and your church family. -Sally Moyer

Notes from our Family Promise families… To a wonderful church family: My family would like to thank you for all you have done. God has put you in our path for many reasons. It was a pleasure to meet all of you. Thank you! -Lisa, Ja-Leasa, & Ja-Kayla Thank you so much for welcoming Family Promise residents into your church to stay. It was greatly appreciated. God bless you all! -Kia & Jo-Jo

Preparing the way

Advent, next to Lent, may be one of my favorite seasons of the church year. I love thinking about the preparations that happen in my heart, my home and this congregation as we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Christ child.

I am thankful to journey through Advent with Trinity’s Advent Devotional. While it may be tempting to pick it up and read it from cover to cover, I wait. I love lighting a candle or two or three or four

on the Advent wreath, sipping a cup of coffee and beginning each day with scripture and a voice from the congregation leading me in a time of devotions and prayer. I encourage you to welcome this devotional into

your personal or family devotional time this Advent. Take time to prepare your hearts, your homes, the church, our community and our world to hear about this amazing gift from God given to us in Jesus Christ.

Another practice that I take on from time to time is called Photo-A-Day. Different websites and organizations give a list of different things to capture in photos each day of the month, or in this case, season of the church year. Here is the list I will use. Please, try it out, too! If you are active on social media like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (to name a few) please add our hashtag: #trinityadvent2015. You are also welcome to e-mail them to Pastor Jen [email protected] so we can share them in worship throughout the season of Advent.

As we continue to prepare for the birth of the Christ child, I hope that we see the light of Christ shining around us, through us and on us each and every day. +peace, Pastor Jen

Advent Lessons and Carols A service featuring all of

the choirs of Trinity

On Dec. 6th, our worship will feature themed readings for Advent with hymns and musical selections featuring all of our Trinity choirs. It will be a special Sunday of music. All of our choirs, along with soloists and instrumentalists, will be featured in bringing us to the light of Christ.

This will be a wonderful day to invite friends and neighbors to come and listen to God’s Word, spoken and sung. It will also be the day we say thank you to Chris Mervine for all of her service at Trinity. Special receptions will follow both services that Sunday. These special services will take place at both the 8am and 10:45am worship times.

Vespers 7:30pm – Dec. 1, 2, 9, 16

We gather each Wednesday evening and one Tuesday in Advent for Advent Vespers. This service takes about thirty minutes. We sing Advent words to traditional carol tunes, hear scripture and a brief meditation. Candles are burning, lights are low, peace, hope and calm fill the air. Come and open your hearts to make room for the Babe of Bethlehem.

Cookies Needed On December 16th we need cookies and lots of them! At this Advent Fellowship Night, we will package cookies and wrap them with bows for our food pantry folks. Let’s share the holiday season with those who need it. We will be providing other special goodies, but we will need children and adults to fill the boxes, put ribbon on the boxes, and decorate cards for the boxes. It will be a great night with Christmas music playing to share Christ’s love with others. Bring as many cookies as you are able to share, and maybe eat one or two! We literally need dozens and dozens of cookies. Can you help?

Prayer & Healing Service On December 27th at 7:00pm we will continue to gather for prayer and healing at Trinity. The service includes Holy Communion with distribution by intinction at stations as we do on Saturday nights. We are trying a variety of other experiences

to enhance our worship time together, sometimes candle lighting, laying on of hands, etc. This service is not just for those in need of prayers for healing, but for all of us who are willing to pray for the needs of others. We hope that this new ministry of worship will be not only an answer to prayer, but also create a renewed sense of prayer within the life of our community.

Christmas Baskets Trinity will be sponsoring turkeys and some other goodies for the Conrad Weiser Food Pantry in December. We will be helping about 200 families in the Conrad Weiser area. The cost per basket is $50. This will include a box filled with a turkey and all the goodies necessary for a wonderful

Christmas dinner, as well as items for stocking up their pantries. Please sign up below to sponsor a whole basket or ½ or a ¼ of a basket. _______________________________________ I will sponsor a: _____ whole basket ($50)

Vicar’s Voice As you make your list and check it twice during Advent, I invite you to please put on your list time to sit in silence for 15 or 20 minutes each day, especially from December 17th through December 23rd. Since the Middle Ages, the church has observed these days in scripture, song, prayer and meditation

reflecting on a collage of Old Testament ways of depicting Christ. These messianic messages progress historically from the beginning, before creation, to the very gates of Bethlehem. They are affectionately known as the “O” Antiphons. Each O Antiphon begins with an invocation of the expected Messiah, followed by praise of him under one of his particular titles. Each ends with a petition for God’s people, relevant to the title by which he is addressed, and the cry for him to “Come.” The seven titles attributed to Jesus are: O Wisdom (Sapientia in Latin) O Ruler of the House of Israel (Adonai) O Root of Jesse (Radix) O Key of David (Clavis) O Rising Dawn (Oriens) O King of the Gentiles (Rex) O Emmanuel

What is striking is that the initials for each Latin title – Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, Clavis, Oriens, Rex and Emmanual combine to form SARCORE. When this is spelled backwards EROCRAS, it means, “Tomorrow, I will be.” It suggests that Christ is answering the plea of the O Antiphons.

I invite you to sit in silence during the days of Advent and ask yourself these questions as you contemplate the O Antiphons:

(1) What word or phrase sticks out for me? (2) What does that word or phrase mean to

me? (3) What is God asking me to be, or to do, or

to think about in the Antiphon?

Day 17: O, Wisdom, proceeding from the mouth of the Most High, pervading and permeating all creation, mightily ordering all things: come and teach us the way of prudence. (Based on Sirach 24:3 and Wisdom 8:1)

Day 18: O, Adonai and ruler of the house of Israel, who appeared to Moses in the burning bush and gave

him the Law on Sinai: Come with an outstretched arm and redeem us. (Based on Exodus 3:2 and Exodus 6:6)

Day 19: O, Root of Jesse, who stands for an ensign before the people, before whom kings are mute and to whom the nations will do homage: come quickly to deliver us. (Based on Isaiah 52:13 and 15; 53:2 and Luke 1:32-33)

Day 20: O, Key of David and scepter of the house of Israel, you open and no one can close. You close and no one can open. Come and rescue the prisoners who are in darkness and in the shadow of death. (Based on Isaiah 22:22, Revelation 3:7, Isaiah 42:6-7 and Psalm 107:10,14)

Day 21: O, Dayspring, splendor of light everlasting: Come and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. (Based on Isaiah 9:1, Malachi 3:20 and II Peter 1:19 and Luke 1:78-79.

Dec 22: O, King of the nations, the ruler they long for, the cornerstone uniting all people: Come and save us all, whom You formed out of clay. (Based on Isaiah 28:16, Ephesians 2:14, Jeremiah 10:7, Matthew 21:42 and Genesis 2:7)

Day 23: O, Emmanuel, our King and our Lord, the anointed for the nations and their Savior: come and save us, O Lord our God. (Based on Isaiah 7:14, and Isaiah 33:22)

May each and every disciple at Trinity Lutheran Church find this holy season one of renewal, a time of deeper understanding of the meaning for this celebration. May the peace of God which passes all understanding be with you as you enter into a new year of opportunities to love, to work, and to worship our Lord.

Grace and peace, Vicar Bonnie

Breakfast Bible Study Our Monday mornings continue. We are studying the Bible readings that we heard the previous Sunday. All of us share in a wonderful breakfast buffet, and you may even help prepare something if you wish. So…come enjoy some fellowship and the study of God’s Word. Make this the year you spend some extra time growing in your knowledge of the Bible. You can come once a month or every week, but join us! We would love to have the room overflowing. We usually have about 30 people. So please participate. It all begins at 8:30am and we are finished by 10:00am.

Trinity Chocolate Festival & Frosted Chocolate Buns 5K

January 30, 2016

Trinity’s Chocolate Festival is happening on Jan. 30th from 3 to 7pm. The committee is planning a festival not to be forgotten. We will again be sponsoring the 5K run the morning of the festival. In the afternoon, we will have all the traditional festival activities including food, music, kids’ activities, and, of course, a great array of gift baskets and craft items on the raffle tables. Proceeds from Trinity’s 2016 Chocolate Festival will be given to the Conrad Weiser Food Pantry (serving over 200 families every month) and the Western Berks Free medical Clinic. The proceeds of the festival have always supported a local charity in our community. You can help make this event a success by coming out and supporting the Chocolate Festival on January 30, 2016. There are many ways to participate. We need lots of volunteers to help the day of the festival! Consider making a small donation to help cover the cost of food for the kitchen, or donate your own chocolate treat for the bake sale. Keep checking the weekly bulletin and kiosks when you come to worship for more updates on the 2016 Chocolate Festival.

Update from the Auction & Raffle Committee It’s time to think about how to help with Chocolate Festival 2016. This year we will again have a basket raffle, and hope that you will start gathering items for a gift basket that you can thoughtfully create and donate. It’s a great way to help others by involving family and friends in the creation of a basket. Ideas for theme baskets will be posted on the kiosks, or feel free to create an original, one-of-a-kind basket.

We are trying to reestablish a small auction incorporating handcrafted pieces of art. If you are an artist or craftsman and have an item you would like to donate to the silent auction table, please call the church office at (610) 693-6062 and arrangements can be made.

Hope to see you all at the 2016 Trinity Chocolate Festival on January 30, 2016 Mike Henry — Festival Chair

100th Anniversary Committee

We are in the process of preparing for Trinity’s 100th anniversary in 2017. A core committee has met, and now it is time to round out the committees with lots of other people. We would love to have you involved. Where do you fit in? Look below and talk to the chair or fill out the form.

Book Committee – Don Stripling, Phil Blatt, Sharlene Williams This committee will research, write and publish a book about the first 100 years of Trinity. This will involve getting information collected, writing cohesive chapters, and publishing the book.

Receptions Committee – Cheryl Bowers This committee will be in charge of receptions for the five homecoming Sundays when our former pastors and interns will be invited back to Trinity.

Picture Committee – Neal Putt This committee will be sorting through our archival pictures as well as looking at other sources of pictures to help us see our past visually. We need people to help with identifying and sorting old pictures, as well as members who are familiar with using scanners and computers.

Trinity’s Men’s Ministry is for all adult men of the congregation. We will meet again on Wednesday, January 13th at 6pm. We will enjoy dinner and continue the series entitled Overcoming Emotions that Destroy by Chip Ingram. It is an excellent resource in dealing with our anger from a biblical and personal perspective. It gives helpful resources and tools that truly can make a difference. Men, come out and enjoy some male companionship. Sign up on the kiosk or call the church office to make a reservation. We are finished by 8pm.

Missing A Person? MAP IS for you!

December 9th at Noon at Stouch Tavern

MAP is another small group ministry at Trinity. It is intended for anyone who

has lost a spouse or another significant person in their life. We come together with missing pieces to see if we can find wholeness together. We have about 20 people gathering monthly to be supportive of one another. Sign up on the kiosk or call the church office to make your reservation. For December, we will travel to Stouch Tavern to enjoy a delightful lunch of chicken marsala, roasted potatoes, assorted bread, tossed salad, chocolate amaretto brownies, with tea, coffee or soda. Lunch will cost $10. We will enjoy table fellowship and continue to bring healing and find wholeness…as we piece it all together.

Western Berks Shepherding -

New Volunteer Training As we give thanks for our blessings, let’s include the blessings of being able to drive and of having a car. Many in our communities depend on Western Berks Shepherding Ministries’ volunteers to share that blessing. There has been a request that we have another fall training session. So, on Wednesday, December 2nd at 10am, there will be a 45 minute new volunteer training at St. John’s (Hain’s) UCC in Wernersville. Going into winter, please keep in mind that we DO NOT transport in bad weather. Volunteers are asked to transport only once a month, the average appointment lasts 2 ½ hours and insurance coverage and mileage reimbursement is available to all volunteers. If you have any questions, please call Cheryl Young at 610-670-5945.

We are thrilled to once again tell you that on November 15th, 310 boxes were packed and

readied to be sent to a child’s waiting arms! This is all possible with the generous donations and year-long support from this congregation and community. From wrappers to stuffers, counters and checkers, donors and all of the organizing in-between, it is a labor of love for Trinity. A very special note of appreciation to Mary and Don Walters, Betty Licht and Gwen Weiser and her elves, Joe and Carol Voletto, Diane Hammaker, Teri Rothenberger, Sue and Logan Rhoads, Josie and Rosalie Brunner for keeping track of the thousands of donations all year and skillfully setting them up for packing. Thank you! Thank you!

Financial Update First, thank you for your continued support of Trinity. You

can see that we still find ourselves $23,000 behind expenses. We need your support to be able to continue to do all the ministry that we do in Christ’s name. Please consider a special gift to help make up this deficit. Think about all of the good things we have been able to accomplish in Christ’s name and help us to continue to allow light to scatter darkness, allowing hope to meet the needs of those who are hopeless. We are so blessed and have so many opportunities to respond. But we pray that you can see and have experienced

first-hand the amazing grace of God at Trinity. Christ is alive in programs that make a difference. Thanks to our Parish Planning Council, our board members, and all who volunteer to make Christ come alive in this place. We simply pray you will help us to meet the challenge that we face, and that you will give a generous gift to the God who has been made known to you at Trinity through the many programs and people. We do not live in fear but by faith.
