CROW’S NEST Vol. XVI, No. 7 www.guilfordcollegeumc.org March 30, 2016

Matt’s note….. Many churches do a good job of observing Lent, that 40 day season of preparation leading up to Easter. But fewer churches emphasize that Easter itself is more than a day – it’s also a season. According to the church calendar, Easter stretches over 50 days, and in a way, the celebration of the resurrection continues all year round. Every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Like many things in life, we spend more time preparing for Easter than we do celebrating it. But the Day of Resurrection is too important to rush past. For long after the brass has stopped ringing in your ears, the chocolate bunnies have mysteriously disappeared and the lilies have been taken out to the curb, the message of Easter continues to cheer Christians with unsurpassable hope. The stone was rolled away, the tomb empty and our Lord Jesus Christ – who once was dead – now lives forevermore. Basil Hume said, “The great gift of Easter is hope - Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake.” Christian hope, as Hume describes it, is not dependent upon good news from Wall Street, Syria or the U.S. Presidential race. Christian hope is the confidence that no matter how long and bumpy the route, our journey ends in Christ’s victory. On the cross he triumphed over evil, sin, injustice and hate and on the first Easter he triumphed over death itself.

The wonderful, hopeful news doesn’t stop there. Those who believe in him will share in his victory, and do so every day of their lives. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul prays they’ll, “understand the confident hope he has given to those he called” and “understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power

that raised Christ from the dead…”

Do we truly believe that the power of almighty God, which raised Jesus from the dead, will give us the strength to live every day? If so, we will remain Christ’s hopeful witnesses, staying above the cynicism and despair to which so many around us succumb. Our lives will be transformed by the confidence that Jesus has enabled all of us who believe to share in his victory. We’ll claim that victory not only in the sweet by and by, but right here and now. It’s Easter, people! Let’s keep celebrating!

Survey is still OPEN

til March 31 One last Reminder!

Whether you are just starting to explore the Christian faith, or you are a long-time Christ-follower, we want to do everything we can to help you grow spiritually. We’re asking you to set aside 20 minutes to take our Spiritual Life Survey that will shape our decisions about how to create the best possible ministry strategies to serve you. The validation of the survey is based on the number of people who take it. We need a minimal of 150 to take this for the results to matter. We know you are very busy, but

this is really important and we want to hear from everyone. Please copy this link: https://polymer.gloo.us/invite/guilfordcollege to access the survey – or go to our church website and download the survey. You will be asked for a password which is “easter”. Your answers are completely anonymous. Your email address is totally protected and will not be shared. You will not received any solicitations. Please help us make a difference as we live beyond ourselves for the glory of God!
