FROM THE RABBI Steven C. Kane

My parent's generation grew up at a time before there was an Israel, and they had an understanding of what it was like to live in a world without a place that Jews as a nation could call home. My generation grew up with an Israel that had to fight for its survival, as witnessed by the Six Day and Yom Kippur Wars. The generation with chil-dren now in Hebrew School has grown up with an Israel that has achieved a level of power and security in the Middle East, even though it is under constant threat of attack. Yet whatever our perspective, Israel is still some-thing that is a significant part of our identity as Jews.

How do we, as American Jews, express our interest and concern for Israel? Of course, there is the obvious act of visiting Israel, something I know many of our congregants have done throughout the years, whether to celebrate a child's Bar/t Mitzvah or simply to visit the land of our an-cestors (and often our cousins). We also have had a won-derful response from younger people who grew up at CSI through participation in Taglit-Birthright trips; well over 100 people from CSI have already done so! As many will attest, it can be a life-altering experience. But for many people a visit to Israel may not be practical or even desira-ble. How else then can we express our support for Israel?

One way is through Israel advocacy organizations. De-pending on your political leanings, there are organizations that represent every point of view, from the far left to the far right, and of course in the center too. They advocate for their point of view both here in the United States and in Israel, often supporting (financially and otherwise) those politicians who share their beliefs and outlooks. Yet all share one thing in common: a commitment to a home-land for the Jewish people in Israel and a vision of what they hope a Jewish State can become.

Over the years, I have found my own Israel advocacy best expressed through the American-Israel Public Affairs Com-mittee, better known as AIPAC. Today, in a very partisan world, it is one of the few bipartisan organizations sup-porting Israel that exists. Its mission is to simply support the U.S-Israel relationship. It is not there to advocate for a particular Israeli political party, but rather to support whatever government is in office, left, right or center. This past summer, it was through the efforts of AIPAC that in the middle of the Gaza war new funding for the Iron Dome system was secured. This, at a time when Congress could barely pass any other legislation! As someone who is best described as a progressive on Israel, I have found that people like our own Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and representatives in Congress (Nita Lowey in my case)

are well represented at AIPAC. Progressive speakers such as Ari Shavit (our Scholar-in-Residence last year) are a part of the organization.

I have attended the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washing-ton, D.C. for the past nine years, and each year find it to be an incredible event. The first two days are devoted to excellent workshops and speakers on almost every con-ceivable issue regarding Israel. Such far-ranging topics have included support for Israel in the Hispanic communi-ty, Israel's relations with India and the third world, new high-tech Israeli inventions and, of course, much on the effort to achieve peace with the Palestinians, including representation by Palestinians speakers. The most im-portant people in American government are a major part of the program, including often the President or Vice-President of the United States and members of the Presi-dent's cabinet.

The last day of the Conference is spent on Capitol Hill, engaging in the most American of acts: lobbying our rep-resentatives in Congress to support Israel. It is truly ex-citing and energizing to meet the people who run our country face to face in small groups. This year Policy Con-ference will take place on March 1-3 at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center. In the past, 10-15 CSI members have joined me at this incredible three-day event. Many times parents have come with their teenage children to give them a taste of "democracy in action" while at the same time gaining a greater understanding of Israel's chal-lenges. Others come as individuals looking for a way to express support for Israel. I would love to double the number of attendees this year! You can register by going to www.aipac.org/pc. (Anyone from Westchester who enters the promo/discount code WESTBOB when they register online will receive $100 off the cost of registra-tion.) I hope you will consider joining me and others who have found AIPAC to be the next best thing to a trip to Israel.

L'hitraot,

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE CSI BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

As an ongoing commitment to our members’ concerns, a committee has been established to evaluate CSI’s current dues and fund-raising structure. The committee will be looking to determine if the method we are currently using satisfies the needs of our community. The committee is tasked with trying to develop a model that will generate enough revenue to provide for the ongoing and future needs of the congregation, while being accessible to all and allowing us to expand our membership.

As always your input is important. If you have any suggestions or comments regarding this process, we would like to hear from you. Please contact the committee chair, Eric Nadler, at [email protected].

CANTORIAL NOTES Hazzan Jeffrey Shiovitz

Celebrate Shabbat Shirah in the Best Possible Way: Through Song

The Shabbat of January 30-31 is known as Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song. When the children of Israel celebrated their great victory over the Egyp-tians as they crossed the sea, Moses and the children of Israel broke forth into a song that celebrated that victory.

“I will sing unto the Lord, for He is highly exalted; the horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.”

This song became incorporated into the observances of the Jewish people. It is recited daily in the morn-ing service, woven into the pattern of Jewish liturgy.

In the Talmud, we find a discussion regarding the precise manner in which the “Song of the Sea” was rendered by Moses and the children of Israel. Rabbi Akiva declared: “the children of Israel repeated the verses that fell from Moses’ lips.”

Rabbi Nehemia resents this aspersion on the Jewish people and he says, “Both Moses and the children of Israel were moved by the same Divine spirit to com-pose with shared inspiration the song of the Red Sea.” Moses uttered the first half of the verse, and the congregation responded with the second half.

Rabbi Akiva believed Moses alone was blessed by heavenly inspiration. The rest of the congregation was a mere echo to his words.

Rabbi Nehemiah maintained that the ecstasy of that moment was such that all of Israel was transformed into a people of prophets, able through their own inspiration to complete the words of Divine praise.

The issue is this: Music is not simply the creative ge-nius of the writer or of the performer, as important and indispensable as they are. We should recognize a sprit that reposes in the people, in the congrega-tion, that evokes this creative achievement and that contributes to the creative process.

This is a lesson about life. A writer must have read-ers who respond to his message. An artist requires viewers who appreciate what he is trying to portray. A speaker needs people who listen to his words, and the cantor requires a congregation whose reverence is an integral part of the experience of worship.

A familiar term for cantor is shaliach tzibur, an emis-sary of the congregation. One can only be an emis-sary if there is a congregation which the cantor rep-resents, as he conveys on the wings of song the hopes and yearnings, the concerns and joys of all who enter the sanctuary for prayer.

Our magnificent tradition can be understood in the same way. What is Judaism, but a great symphony played before a great audience? The whole glorious heritage –- with its laws and teachings, its heroes and history, its dreams and visions — is a symphony in search of a listener, a song in search of an echo, a challenge in search of a response.

We are the audience of that tradition, and we deter-mine whether it is alive or moribund, ancient or rele-vant, history or destiny. The answer is found in the way we respond, and, according to Rabbi Nehemiah, in the way we share in the creative process.

Music conveys the spiritual fervor of Jewish obser-vance. The Jewish people developed chants and melodies, nuschaot and niggunim, for every worship service. In daily prayer, in Sabbath worship, in festi-val liturgy, and in High Holy Day worship, our people created chants and songs in which to pour forth their supplication and yearning, their faith and celebra-tion, their joy and hope.

We rejoice with the sound of Moses, the first nation-al hymn of Israel. We can hear in its cadences the timeless melody of Jewish life through all the ages.

PLEASE REMEMBER that both Junior Congregation and Kadima Services take place on Shabbat. Children, as well as anyone else coming inside the building on Shabbat, should be dressed appropriately. Shabbat is a “special” and holy time, and children should wear “special” clothing. No sweatpants, jeans, sports uniforms, etc.

Your children spend most of their 7th grade and part of 8th grade involved in Judaism almost every day. They are going to Hebrew school, learning and doing mitzvot, go-ing to the Rabbi’s class, Cantor’s lessons, Bar/t Mitzvah services, Bar/t Mitzvah parties, studying, shopping and talking about the ceremony where they become a Jewish adult in the Jewish community, and now are responsible and required to take on the mitzvot in the Torah.

Now it is 6 months after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony - one year, two years, three years or even four years. How involved are they? Do they come to any Hebrew High School classes, youth programs, or other programs planned for teens? Is Yom Kippur the only time they have set foot in the synagogue? How could your teenag-er go from spending practically every minute being in-volved to practically nothing? I know that all teens are very busy and we know it can be a struggle to try to get them to come. But there are things that are expected from them and they do get them done. So why not ex-pect your teen to participate minimally - at least once a month - in something Jewish? It is great that our CSI teenagers are so involved in their secular school activi-ties, but isn’t being Jewish right up there on the list? I get from many parents “my child just doesn’t have the time.” They are playing 6 sports, playing 2 instruments, are in 3 plays and don’t have time to even study. Well, the world is a very different place than when we were growing up. We need to make the time and the priority for our child to come and get involved. CSI teen programs teach and foster tolerance, community, love of Israel and Judaism, responsibility, social action and community service. Does your teenager understand what is a hate crime? What is modern Anti- Semitism? Will they be able to answer a question about the Arab/Israeli conflict when they are on their college campus?

If every parent of a high school student would ask their teen to attend ONE Hebrew High class or ONE USY youth program or ONE social action program per month, they might find that they actually like being part of the Jewish Community. We need your teens to work in our Reli-gious School. Everyone benefits when your teen either works for pay or volunteers to help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Sundays. Teens working get great experi-ence helping kids with different learning styles or emo-tional needs. They help in the office and even learn to cook!

When you support one of our teen programs by paying the registration fee and sending your teenager, you are not only helping your child, but enabling CSI to offer all teens great programming that will affect the next genera-tion of Jewish leaders.

If you or your teen have an idea or suggestion for a pro-gram, please contact me or Adam. Check out our Face-book page too!

We love our teen workers, and we look forward to writing great recommendations for college.

New classes on Sunday mornings: Learn Modern Hebrew with Adam, or Jewish Cooking and Eating with Roni!

JANUARY’S BAT MITZVAH January 17:

Hi, my name is Jenna Berkower. I’ve been practicing to become a bat mitzvah for 8 years, so it’s about time that my special day has come! I live in Chappaqua with my amazing and very supportive family, which consists of my mom Mindy, my dad Howard and my big brother Jason. I go to Seven Bridges Middle School. I really like science and social studies, and throughout the volleyball season, I play volleyball eve-ryday after school. During the off-season, I play volley-ball with the Chappaqua Recreation team. During the summer, I go to Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, where I am always experiencing life in the Jewish communi-ty. Whether it’s going to Rabbi Kane’s class, morning services, Shabbat services or doing blessings after we eat, I’m always surrounded by Jewish life that I look forward to all year long. During my free time, I love to dance, sing, play volleyball and hang with my friends.

For my bat mitzvah project, I teamed up with Chap-paqua’s Salon 228 and stylist Margaret D’Alessandro in September and October to sell pink hair extensions benefiting the Pink Hair for Hope Foundation, which funds breast cancer research. For a $10 donation, people got a pink hair extension applied to their hair, so they looked stylish and helped fight breast cancer at the same time! People could either walk into the Salon to make a donation and get their hair extension or they could attend one of the special events that I took part in. On October 15th, I held a special “Get Your PINK On” event at the Salon, complete with pink balloons, decorations and lollipops, and just a few days later I teamed up with Jenny Harris and her col-leagues at Houlihan Lawrence in Chappaqua for their annual “Shop for the Cause Boutique” supporting the fight against breast cancer. I promoted my project and the two special events by posting on social media, passing out flyers to kids and their families at Chap-paqua’s Community Day, and posting flyers in store windows in Chappaqua (with thanks to the store own-ers). I even wrote an article about my project and the two events that was published in the online newspa-per “NewCastle NOW.” With the help of Salon 228 and my efforts, I raised $660 for breast cancer re-search. This project was such a unique and amazing opportunity that I will cherish forever and that I hope to do again for years to come.

Like I said earlier, I go to volleyball practice daily throughout the season, and practice once a week off season. I’m very passionate about volleyball and I’ve made a huge spot in my heart for the game and my amazing teammates who will be my friends for life. In addition to volleyball, I have many other passions, like my rock band. We practice once a week on Monday nights at Music in Chappaqua with our amazing in-structor Danny. I’m the lead singer, and my band-mates, Eleanor (drum player and backup vocalist), Catherine (pianist) and Kyra (acoustic guitarist) make up our awesome band “Forest Emotion.” My biggest passion is being close with every one of my friends. Whether it’s my Ramah friends who tend to live far away, my school friends, my day camp friends, my band friends or my volleyball friends, I do everything I can to maintain the closest of friendships with them.

Becoming a bat mitzvah means to me that not only am I becoming an adult in the Jewish community but with that comes great responsibilities that I will be taking on. I will be counted in the 10 members to be a minyan, I will be expected to attend Jewish events and participate as an adult. In addition, I will become a B-sider at Camp Ramah, which I’ve always believed was for the older, more mature kids. As a camper who was an A-sider for 3 years, I know that B-siders are role models for the kids on A-side. As a bat mitzvah, I will become a role model for the A-side campers and be a big sister to each and every one of them.

I’d like to thank my family and friends for always being the shoulders to cry on, and always being there so I never fall. More specifically, I’d like to thank my par-ents and brother for being my biggest supporters in this roller coaster ride that has finally ended: “We’re finally there and out of countdown mode!!!” I’d also like to thank my grandparents Dr. Ira and Mrs. Barba-ra Pisetzner for being my “grandmoo and grandpoo” and helping me get to this day. I’m grateful to Rabbi Kane, Cantor Shiovitz, Roni Shapiro Ben-David, my He-brew School teachers from Shorashim through Heh, and Ellen Johnson for all of their teaching, encourage-ment and support that has prepared me for becoming a bat mitzvah. Lastly, I’d like to thank all of my friends for supporting me and always being there for me, XO.

Jenna

Every Child Deserves A Jewish Education!

Please Support our Lev Program! Donations are needed to pay for our Lev program for the 2014-2015 school year. Lev means “heart.”

CSI believes that all children, regardless of their developmental, emotional or cognitive challenges, should receive a Jewish educa-tion. These special children are mainstreamed into our classes, or, if necessary, are placed in a self-contained special Lev class.

Many people in the past few years have given generously to support our Lev program. Without their support, we could not have given children with varying emotional, behavioral and learning needs the opportunity to join our Religious School program. We help children who range from developmentally delayed to autistic. Thanks to your generous donations, they, too, can have a Jewish education. Please make donations to the Mitzner Family Tuition Assistance Fund indi-cating they are to be used for the Lev Program.

Immediate Past President

I intimated last month that I’d be writing about Ian’s Bar Mitzvah. I just wasn’t sure what I’d be saying. Most peo-ple, I’m told, stress more and more as the date of their child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah approaches. Oddly, the closer the date came, the less worried I was. Let me tell you why.

We started taking Ian to services regularly when he was in 3rd grade. It was very hard for him, however, and we knew we’d need years for him and for CSI to get used to each other. Having autism, Ian was unable to sit still or quietly for any length of time. With the help of his teach-ers, we devised a “sticker” chart for him that we could use on Shabbat. At first, he would get a sticker every mi-nute or so of good behavior, and after ten he’d get a Her-shey’s Kiss, and after getting 40, he’d get to go to Kiddush after services and have dessert. We timed our appear-ance to be late in the service so we’d only be there for about 30 minutes. Then we stretched it to 40 minutes, and then 50, and then an hour. After a few years, we were able to go for about two hours with Ian, and he would be able to attend without even using the chart anymore, though he still appreciated the Kisses.

When we first started to attend services with Ian, a few people would ask us to “shush” Ian, but we didn’t give up, and after explaining the situation, everyone at CSI became a supporter. We all saw the small steps of pro-gress that Ian was able to make, month after month, year after year. So many in our community would tell us how well he did, or how nice it was to see him. The more we came, the easier it became.

We knew he’d need to have an afternoon service, which is short enough that he and his special needs classmates would be able to attend in its entirety, so we started attending other Mincha/Ma’ariv (Havdalah) services about three or four years ago.

I recall two years ago telling my parents that we weren’t even sure if Ian would go up to the bimah on the day of his Bar Mitzvah. We talked about how you really just be-come a Bar Mitzvah, you don’t really have one. Later, we

hoped that Ian would just say the blessings before and after the Torah reading. When we sat down with his Lev teacher, Sheera Zuckerman, however, she insisted that Ian could and would do so much more. She, Roni, and the other teachers in the Religious School worked with Ian to get him comfortable going up to the bimah on Sun-day during school. We worked with Ian at home, review-ing the prayers and teaching him his Torah reading. About a month before his Bar Mitzvah date, he volun-teered to lead Adon Olam from the bimah on a Shabbat morning. Everyone was so amazed. At that point, we knew he was ready. All those little steps that we and the congregation had taken with him had paid off, and I knew we had nothing to worry about.

The Shabbat after Thanksgiving was a perfect day for a wonderful Mincha/Ma’ariv service. My parents present-ed Ian with his tallit, which he actually wore. Rebecca started us off with the Ashrei, and then Ian led the Torah service and read Torah for my parents’ Aliyah. My father read for the Aliyah that Darlene and I shared. Ian was then called up as a Bar Mitzvah for the third and final Aliyah. He chanted the blessings and I read from the To-rah. It was truly a multi-generational effort. Ian went back up to lead the remainder of the Torah service. He went back to the bimah for the presentations from the Rabbi and from Andy Kagan. The entire congregation stood to share in the recitation of the Shehecheyanu, the prayer for Thanksgiving, as it took the efforts of all of us to reach this day.

Ian stood on the bimah ten times that evening. Progress sometimes is measured in small steps, but when you rec-ognize and take joy each step, you can go quite a dis-tance. We never know what Ian will say or do, but he was genuine and funny and, well, just Ian. It could not have gone more perfectly, and I could not have been prouder of any child of mine, or more grateful to our CSI community for giving us a place where we could share our child and our simcha. We are all truly blessed.

The Rosh Chodesh Kislev celebration was a truly fun even-ing. Thank you Roni for putting this evening together. The food was delicious and the discussions were lively and informative. A special thanks to Marcia Meislin, who shared her story of food addiction. If you missed the pro-gram, you can read how Marcia overcame her addiction in her memoir, The Goodbye Cookie.

Mah jongg nights continue to be well attended, and there REALLY is a beginners’ table. If you have always wanted to learn how to play, now’s the time! The next Mah jongg game will be January 26, 2015 at 7:30 at CSI. The only requirements are Sisterhood membership and the willing-ness to have fun. If you have any questions, please con-tact Cheryl Katz at [email protected].

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 is Member-ship Movie Night. We will be watching Arranged, which centers on the friend-ship between an Orthodox Jewish wom-an and a Muslim woman who meet as first-year teachers at a public school in Brooklyn. Over the course of the year, they learn they share much in common - not least of which is that they are both

going through the process of arranged marriages. The

film premiered at the 2007 South by Southwest Film Festi-val, won top prizes at The Berkshire International Film Festival, The Brooklyn International Film Festival, The Washington Jewish Film Festival, The Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival, and The Skip City International D-Cinema Film Festival in Japan. There will be a $3 snack fee.

The gift shop is open and has many new items. Please stop by on Sundays when Religious School is in session, or, if you can’t make it on a Sunday, send an email to [email protected] to make an appointment. And as you know by now, many products are from Israel.

There is a lot more to look forward to for Sisterhood. There’s Mishloach Manot, Sisterhood Shabbat, and an author’s visit. There’s more Rosh Chodesh with Roni and the monthly Mah jongg games. And there are always sur-prises ahead.

As you can see, there is a lot going on at CSI Sisterhood. Please don’t forget to pay your dues. Membership con-tinues to grow, and you don’t won’t to miss any of these or future activities.

The CSI bulletin and the CSI website are great sources of information. Continue to read future bulletins, as well as check the website for future Sisterhood programs.

Also, we are always looking for new ideas, so if you have any suggestions or wish to lead or help with an activity, please let us know. Our officers/chairpersons are always open to new ideas.

It's All About the Dreidel was the theme of PJ Library's Chanukah! We created dreidels out of Legos and Playdoh. Kids spun and danced, ate and laughed! What a fun way to celebrate the first night of Chanukah!

Many PJ Library subscribers received tzedakah boxes. Cute and colorful, they are a great lead-in to our next PJ event! We will be having a Bagels from Benny event which is based on the fabulous book by Aubrey Graham. Bagels from Benny is also a featured PJ Library book. We are going to have this special event on National Bagel Day (Feb. 9) - which is quite fitting!

As the weather gets colder it is the perfect time to snuggle in with your favorite PJ Library book! One of my favorites is All of A Kind Family by Sydney Taylor. I read the entire series when I was in elementary school, and it brings back memories of escaping with a family full of sisters.

What is your favorite PJ Library book? I would love to hear from you. I will put some responses in my next article and on the bulletin board.

Merrie
