Dear Friends:
Scholars debate whether American Thanksgiving is actually based on our Festival of Sukkot. Rabbi Elias Lieberman of Falmouth, Massachusetts (on Cape Cod) tells Jewish News Syndicate, “While we cannot be certain about what motivated those Pilgrim settlers to initiate a feast of thanksgiving, it is likely that
they consciously drew on a model well-known to them from the Bible they cherished. Seeing themselves as new Israelites in a new ‘promised land,’ the Pilgrims surely found inspiration in the Bible, in the Books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, in which God commands the ancient Israelites to observe the Feast of Booths—in Hebrew, Sukkot, ‘To rejoice before Adonai your God’ at the time of the fall harvest.”
American Jews treasure Thanksgiving, and not only because it may have roots in our own festival. We are grateful for a holiday, celebrated by virtually all Americans, which isn’t a Christian religious holiday and is therefore one which includes us fully.
One feature shared by Sukkot and Thanksgiving is rejoicing. On Sukkot, in fact, we are enjoined to rejoice, which may be read as a commandment to be happy. If you’re like me, you may wonder how we can be commanded to feel a certain emotion. However, on Thanksgiving, and throughout the American “holiday season,” many people experience social pressure, sometimes family pressure, to be happy at a time when other emotions in our lives make joy difficult.
This Thanksgiving, many will be in a festive mood. At the same time, one person may be deeply bereaved after the death of a loved one. Others may be facing a difficult medical diagnosis. Still another may have trouble at work, or worse, confronting unemployment and financial challenges. And some are clinically depressed. The reasons that joy may be difficult are many and varied.
A few thoughts: 1. Let’s not pressure our loved ones or friends to smile and “join in the fun” if they’re not up to it. 2. If you’re not feeling festive, let your most intimate loved ones know.

ank You!
Mazel Tov
3. If you’re not invited anywhere for Thanksgiving, let somebody close to you know. 4. If you know somebody who may not have a place for Thanksgiving, ask them. Even if you’re not sure. 5. Even if you’re not fully up to joining in the celebration, let your default position be to go anyway. Social isolation tends make matters worse. 6. If you’re not up to celebrating Thanksgiving, or you don’t have a place to go, come to Temple on Shabbat. Here, you can give thanks to God in the embrace of community without having to pretend to joy you do not experience. 7. If you are suffering from depression, seek mental health care. I’m not a mental health professional, but please feel welcome to start with me. As your rabbi, I’m able to direct you to resources—including to resources that are free or low cost, if necessary. Happy Thanksgiving!
Faithfully,
Rabbi Barry H. Block

President's MessageHappy November to all! It was so nice to see everyone at Temple during the High Holidays. I hope you enjoyed the services, music, discussions, and receptions as much as I did. There are so many people to thank. The Rosh Hashanah gala, organized and prepared by Kirsta Nigro, was wonderful. Fortunately, there were many of you that helped with shopping, set up, and baking. I am so grateful to Kirsta and I also want to thank Jan Alman, Rita Fagan, Terri Moore, Marilyn Sorrels, Dale Ronnel, Carol Weisbly, Bobbye Levy, Phyllis Storthz, Jill Bauman, Meg Marion, Kathy Grundfest, and ALL who helped. The Break the Fast at the conclusion of Yom Kippur was fantastic. Thanks again to Rita Fagan, Terri Moore and all others who assisted in one way or another! I also want to express my gratitude to Richard Estelita for creating our beautiful memorial books, High Holiday booklets, and the acorns for the Tree of Life honoring the Legacy Donors. I am still trying to figure out if there is anything Richard can’t do.
As I reflect on the High Holidays, I ask that you reflect on them, too. Your feedback is very important to me, and to the Congregation as a whole. There are two items on our agenda at the monthly Board meetings that are dedicated to feedback and discussion. These are “kvell and kvetch” and “no staff huddle”. These are critical times to air what needs to be aired. Feedback is imperative for us to continue to improve and meet the needs of all congregants. So, let me hear from you…the good and the not so good.
In addition to thanking all of the amazing volunteers, I want to thank Milton Boyd, Keila Patton, Eileen Hamilton, and Rabbi Block. They are extraordinarily dedicated to Congregation B’nai Israel.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Carol ParhamPresident
Men’s Club Message:A big thank you to everyone who served as Usher/Greeters during the High Holidays and to all those who helped with the Break-the Fast.We also want to thank everyone who helped put up or take down the Temple Sukkah recently, including Eoin Dockter, Jay Lazerowitz, Mark & Bari Himelfarb, Scott Jordan, Matthew Lopas, Madelon Scallet, and others. And also all those who helped decorate it.

Congregation B’nai Israel, Little Rock, AR
From the Administrator Eileen Hamilton
Hacarat HaTov is the Hebrew term for gratitude. I wanted to express some gratitude and thanks, post high holidays, to our congregation.
Thank you to Eugene Krupitsky and team for the new HVAC system. From boilers to chillers, from adjustments to problems, he stayed with it and managed the project from start to finish, even adjusting temperatures while all of us were praying on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Thank you to all who accepted honors during the holidays and to the musicians for making the services so pleasant for everyone – full of diversity and variety, melody and beauty. It’s wonderful to see so many faces, new and long standing in the Temple at the same time.
Thank you to Richard Estelita, who prepared all the High Holiday bulletins, redesigned the services of renewal, Tashlich service and more. His time and effort in the layout and proofing of materials was extraordinary and tireless. He also cleaned the building from top to bottom.
Thank you to those who fed us – from Onegs, to the Gala, many challahs, the Break-the-Fast, and all the wonderful bakers who brought their delicious creations to the Temple for all of us to enjoy.
Thank you to all our vendors and service contractors who were in the building before the holidays to check, fix, clean and groom our environment to make sure all was in order for our arrival. Yes, we pay our vendors, but their extra care this time of year was ever present in their work.
Thank you to our executive board who allowed us time to close the office and catch up and make updates. Still more to be done! This support allowed us to make strides in the new database system and move forward to assist you better in the future.
Thank you to Milton and Keila. What more can I say?
Thank you to LaFTY for some really clever children’s services and to their advisors, Joy and Alana.
Thank you to the religious-school teachers and madrichim who have been teaching this whole season without break – and won’t get a break until Thanksgiving.
And to the Men’s Club and crew who got the Sukkah in place just days following Yom Kippur. Like a barn raising.
Writing this kind of note can be risky – so, thank you to those who I have overlooked by name and for pardoning me that I may have not listed everyone or remembered everyone no matter how obvious it may be.
Thank you for Rabbi Block for your guidance and stamina. You keep a very fast pace.
And thank you God, for allowing us to reach this season again, and again, and again.
Enjoy the rest of your year.
You may choose classes from the following. Each class will be offered twice, and of course there will be coffee and delicious
Kosher noshables.

Shabbat is the most famous holiday – most kids know the blessings, the symbols, and the basic facts about it. It is our Sabbath…we should know, right? However, knowing so much about it and having Shabbat so close to our hearts, I wonder why many do not observe it weekly? It’s not like we have to study for Shabbat. Yes, there is preparation, but isn’t the work put into the Shabbat experience given back with such joy and benet?
Here are some things that maybe you did NOT know about Shabbat. Perhaps this is what you can share with others next time you’re sitting around the Shabbat table. Here are ve new facts for you:
• Shabbat comes from the Hebrew root Shin, Bet, Tav meaning rest or cessation. It is not from the same root as sheva, the name for the number seven.
• The challah is covered before blessing and eating it because it is the last to be blessed. It should not be embarrassed in front of the candles and kiddush cup as being the last. Isn’t the best always saved for last?
• It is traditional to have two Shabbat candles for the blessing. But it is permissible to light as many as you want. Some light one for each member of the family.
• The kiddush cup is filled up to the top rim and then overflows to represent the overflowing blessings given to us each week.
• Havdalah (the ceremony of separation of the Shabbat from the rest of the week) is traditionally done right aer sunset on Saturday but can be done as late as sunset on Tuesday.
Have fun learning new facts and exploring your Judaism at your family table. ere is no end to our learning.

LaFTY News
LaFTY had an important month in October! We got things started off with the Yom Kippur Children’s Service! The skit for the service was based on the app Angry Birds, and the goal of the activity was to help get the Angry Bird (played by past-president Hallie Pingle) the feathers that she lost from being so mean during the year. The Angry Bird had to go to all the children in the service and apologize for what she had done throughout the past year, and promise to do better. In return for the kind apology, the children gave Angry Bird her feathers back. Special thanks to Eileen Hamilton for helping write the script, and LaFTYite Isabella Ifrah along with David Bauman for the amazing music during the service.
After Yom Kippur, LaFTY had the pleasure of helping Jacobs Camp year-round staff out with hosting Camp B’nai Israel. It was a great time to hang out with NFTY-Southern Regional Director, Sarah Tucker, and Jacobs Camp Director Anna Herman. Not only was it a great opportunity for LaFTYites to hang out with Jewish professionals we had not seen since summer, but it was also an amazing chance to spend time with many future LaFTYites, and see that this little youth group is going to be in good hands.
Finally, on the last Sunday of the month, LaFTY had a very important meeting with the advisors, parents, and even eighth graders of the Temple to discuss what NFTY-SO Winter Kallah will look like when we host the event February 7th-9th. The theme will be The Olympics, and people coming together despite their differences.

Exciting Sisterhood NewsFirst, there is now a new endowment fund at Temple: the Sisterhood Legacy Endowment Fund (SLEF)! Created with Sisterhood funds and approved at the last Sisterhood meeting and by the Temple Board, proceeds will support: 1) the Temple’s PJ Library commitment, 2) our Temple kitchen and 3) the Temple’s children and family endeavors. Anyone can contribute to it as they would all Temple funds. In addition, the Judaica Shop will contribute profits to it annually. (Note: A SLEF Board of three (3) members was established to ensure expenditures from the fund will follow the guidelines set in the fund document.)
Second, after this fiscal year, Sisterhood will be discontinued! Since women are involved in every level of Temple activities including the Board and Committees, there is not a need for another organization with its inherent overhead. There’s a Transition Committee to ensure that all commitments made for this year will be kept. In addition, the Judaica Shop will continue as long as it is considered profitable.
We are excited that we are adding a revenue stream to our congregation through the SLEF and that we are lowering the overhead that an extra Temple organization requires while knowing that all the things that Sisterhood did are being covered already through Temple committees.
Please contact any member of the Transition Committee for more information: Naomi Zottoli, Marilyn Sorrells, Sheri Simon, Ellyn Polsky, Cheryl Streiff, Emily Lewis, Esther Gordon, Debbie Luckom, Trudy Jacobson, Kathy Bauman, and Doris Krain.
Operation Finale follows the thrilling true story of the secret mission led by Israeli intelligence agent Peter Malkin (Oscar Isaac) to inltrate Argentina and capture Adolf Eichmann (Ben Kingsley), the Nazi ocer who masterminded the plans that sent millions of innocent Jews to their deaths during World War II, and bring him to justice.
