The GAPP committee will begin considering applicants following that date. If you are still interested in applying and have not yet picked up an application stop by room 349 anytime to pick one up. If you are wondering what is involved, you will host a student for two weeks (Nov. 18 - Dec. 5). Hosting a student means that he or she will stay at your house, go with you where you go, sit beside you in your classes, etc. In June, you can then go to Germany (the ticket prices are still not set) and be hosted by the student whom you hosted in November.

Calling Star-Struck Volunteers | Planetarium The Planetarium at WKU puts on 3 public shows weekly (Tues and Thurs, 7 PM; Sunday 2 PM). The shows are FREE and volunteers help to run the shows and welcome guests. Hardin is on the lookout for excellent young volunteers who may earn service hours simultaneously.

Training will begin with an orientation session this coming Sunday, September 15 at 12:30 (volunteers will be asked to attend the 2:00 pm show and to show up 1 ½ hours before hand for training). Since this is fairly quick notice, and although we prefer volunteers to attend this particular Sunday training, we are allowing for an alternate training the following Thursday, September 19 at 5:30 if it is absolutely impossible for them to come Sunday. (This training will also involve attending the 7 pm show.) If interested students cannot attend either of these trainings, then they will have to wait for the next cohort in the spring.

The requested commitment is at least two 2-hour shifts each month. More details about the kinds of opportunities available to them are detailed in the Volunteer Handbook which can be found on the Hardin Planetarium website at https://www.wku.edu/hardinplanetarium/volunteer.php .

Students who would like to join the fall volunteer cohort should indicate their interest right away by sending an email to Ronn Kistler at [email protected], or alternatively calling the Planetarium at 270-745-4044.

Science Olympiad Coach Science Olympiad is a year-long event in which a team of 15 GHS students prepare to compete in 22 events in science and engineering. Ms. Galloway, Ms. Leeper and Ms. Murphy have coached our team to as high as 4th place in the state in 2019, but to WIN at state, we need more help! This year, we have another team in our region (BGHS) calling on handy parents, WKU professors and other professionals in STEM to help with coaching, and GHS wants to do the same! If you or a friend or relative would be willing to coach a pair of students or guide a construction project (after school, 3:00-5:00, or a few hours on a Saturday), PLEASE get in touch with [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected] to set up a time! Will McCoy, Special Education Teacher & Coach Originally from Glasgow, KY, Mr. Will McCoy is new to Greenwood

this year, as a Special Education English/History teacher. He will also be our Head Boys Basketball Coach, Assistant Athletic Director, and helping sponsor FCA. A 2008 graduate of Glasgow High School and Western Kentucky University, he has taught a total of three years so far. He says some of his biggest influences in his childhood and teen years were teachers and coaches. His grandfather was a teacher, principal, and superintendent, and his mom has been a Special Education teacher for 25 years. He has seen the happiness the career brought to them and he is grateful for their impact; molding him into the person he is today. He wanted to enter a career in which he could help make a positive impact on has many people as possible; teaching was that for him. He was told early in life to “find a career that motivates you daily and it won't feel like work,” and he says he successfully did that. Coach McCoy has been married for six years to his wife, Brittanie. They have a one-year-old daughter, Lennon, and two dogs—a black lab named Abbie and a pug named Zoie. Outside of school he is a sports junkie, enjoys working out, playing “old man” basketball, golf, and tennis. He and his wife love music, they try to go see a concert once a month, and they love to travel to their favorite cities, plus a new spot each year. He and his family attend

Crossland Community Church.

Most Memorable Moment of Teaching/Coaching: “My most memorable moment so far as a teacher/coach happened outside of the classroom, and that was when I looked up at my grandmothers visitation and our basketball team had driven to Glasgow to be there for me. That meant more than I can ever explain to those guys.” Favorite Quote: “Good teams become great teams when the members trust each other enough to surrender the me for the we.” -Phil Jackson Favorite Sports Team: College – WKU/UK | NBA – Los Angelas Lakers | MLB – Chicago Cubs | NFL – Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans Favorite Food: Ribeye Steak Favorite Movie: Space Jam
