RECEIVING JESUS

Today marks a wonderful day for some of our young children as they receive their First Holy Communion. This is always one of my favorite events. You can see the excitement in the children’s eyes. They are full of expectation and wonder. They have been taught to understand (as best as any of u can) that Jesus is really and truly present in His Body and Blood in forms of bread and wine. This is such an important core belief for us Catholics. We know when Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of me,” He was directing us, through the Apostles, to continue to share this meal and sacrifice, and to recognize Him truly present in the Eucharist. The Catholic Church has been the guardian of the Eucharist since the Last Supper. We have continued an unbroken belief in the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, even while other Christian communities have reduced its meaning to a symbol. We do not see the Eucharist as a symbol. We believe it to be true.

The children have been anticipating this day for a long time in their young lives. They have prepared, in particular, by experiencing the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The best way to prepare to meet Jesus is to make sure our relationship with Him is as clear and healthy as possible. Reconciliation is the way to do that. We also give a token sacrifice by fasting for one hour before receiving Communion. This fast is simply to remind us in a very simple way, that the food we eat for breakfast is far different from the food we receive at Mass.

I hope that as we celebrate this joyous day for the children of our parish, that all of us would refresh ourselves in our belief and dedication to the Eucharist. Holy Communion may happen regularly but it is anything but routine. Each time we receive, we should be as excited and hope-filled as these children are today. Jesus comes to us. He becomes a part of us. He wants us to become what we receive.

CONGRATULATIONS, FATHER TOM

This past Monday, May 1, Father Tom Dore celebrated his 56th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. He was ordained by Cardinal Meyer at Mundelein Seminary and had his Mass of Thanksgiving the following Sunday at Saint Tarcissus. He has served in various parishes and even worked as pastor of Saint Giles four years beyond retire-ment age. Father Tom has spent the last eight years with us at Saint Pascal. He has been generous and helpful in countless ways. Please share your congrat-ulations and gratitude with him. Happy Anniversary, Father Tom Dore!

CATCH UP SUNDAY

Saint Pascal is an extremely active parish. We have many ministries, activities and outreach work, along with our connection to the Pope Francis Global Academy, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, our home for single Moms called Monica’s House, and so many more. We do great work! IT may seem hard to believe the parish needs as much funding to run as we do. But just to give you an example, we have some lights out in church. It requires scaffold-ing which is labor intensive, and many hours of work. To have the workers come here to change only a few lights would be wasteful. To avoid calling workers back in a few week because more lights go out, we’ll change them all. That will cost about $6700. We’ve sprung a few leaks in the rectory roof. Because of the barrel tile, it too is very labor intensive. It will probably run about $7500 to do the repairs. I think you get the idea. Plus if you look at our financial report, you can see we are running about $30,000 short of budget. I am asking that everyone --- especially those who haven’t supported the parish --- please consider giving a gift to Saint Pascal so we can balance our books. The official Catch Up Sunday will be May 21. But feel free to make your extra offering any time! We just need to make sure our parish is strong so we can continue our good work!

Word of Life “We must solve the real and pressing problems of inadequate care, not avoid them through solutions such as physician-assisted suicide. A broad right to physician-assisted suicide could undermine efforts to marshal the needed resources, and the will,

Eucharist - the Greatest Treasure of the Church

Each Thursday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Saint Pascal hosts the place for quiet reflection - Eucharistic Adoration in Church. The purpose of Eucharistic Adoration is to give every Catholic an opportunity to spend time with our Eucharistic Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament.

Everyone is welcome and invited to spend some time on Thursdays for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour or more if so desired. It calms one’s soul, brings peace to one’s heart and deepens one’s relationship with the Lord. Making time with Jesus may be the gift you can give yourself.

SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SAINT PASCAL CONFERENCE

Jesus is the gate, the only entrance to the fold. The image of the gate directs our attention to Jesus the Risen One, who always recognizes us and cares for us, to Jesus our Shepherd. This is where resurrection faith leads

us so “that we might have life and have it more abundantly.” Christ is truly here for us, calls us by name, and leads us to life.

JUSTICE

Also see http://stpascal.org/serve/PeaceJustice.

Each year in recognition of Mother’s Day, Saint Pascal celebrates a Novena in honor of Mothers. If there is a woman who you would like us to pray for in the Novena, please return the envelope included in your Sunday envelope packet

with the names. All envelopes will be placed in a basket in front of the altar and remembered in all Masses from May 14 through May 22.

Spring 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This is a special year for the Archdiocese of Chicago as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities’ centennial year is truly a celebration for all of us because its great tradition of charitable care has included the support of volunteers and donors from every parish in the archdiocese. For 100 years, through every era of war, peace, poverty and prosperity, Catholic Charities has worked together with the faithful to fulfill the Gospel mission to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, welcome the stranger, comfort the afflicted, and bring hope to the hopeless.

Each year on Mother’s Day, we have an opportunity to make a financial contribution to the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection. This year, as we face increasing violence in our communities, it is a critical time for us to come together to support Catholic Charities. With more than 150 locations throughout Cook and Lake Counties, Catholic Charities’ services are intentionally located in the most troubled areas.

Through food and nutrition programs, early childhood education, alternatives for at-risk youth, trauma and grief counseling, job training, domestic violence programs, and substance abuse treatment, Catholic Charities’ services are a powerful antidote for the culture of drugs, gangs and violence that takes root in desperate areas.

Your donation to Catholic Charities will help the Church’s efforts to promote peace, restore human dignity, and bring hope to those living with brutal violence and poverty. Please contribute as generously as you are able during Catholic Charities collection on Mother’s Day. Or, make your donations directly to Catholic Charities at 721 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL 60654, www.catholiccharities.net/donate. May God bless you and your families.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS

We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with men and women who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following:

INFANT BAPTISMS: Registration in the parish is a prerequisite. Parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal Preparation Session at least two months prior to the Baptism. Meetings are held on the first Monday evening of each month (except for holidays). Baptisms are generally held on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 PM based on the liturgical calendar. (Baptisms do not take place during Lent.) Arrangements can be made at the Parish Office.

RECONCILIATION: Every Saturday at 9:00 AM

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Saint Pascal requires either the bride, the groom, or the parent of either be registered and active as a parishioner for at least 6 months before contacting us to make any arrangements. Allow at least 6 months to complete wedding arrangements. Attendance at a music-planning workshop for the wedding Mass/ceremony is required. These are scheduled twice a year.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: Anytime a person is facing a serious illness, surgery or hospitalization, it is proper to receive the Sacrament of the Sick. Please contact a priest.

MINISTRY OF CARE - HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS: Please call the Parish Office to arrange for Communion visitation.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Our Family Centered Catechesis Program is for families with children in grades K-8. Sessions meet once a month from September to May on either Monday evenings or Saturday mornings. In order for a child to receive the Sacraments, she/he must be enrolled in the program one year prior to the sacramental “prep” year.
