Principal’s Message We are now officially 10 sleeps away from our Cardiff South P&C Christmas Carols event and whilst it is quite unnerving how quickly the days are passing by, the students and staff are getting really excited about next week’s Carols event. If you haven’t yet had the time to lock in on Carols and what you need to do to be ready; this week is the week to ENGAGE. Pre-order forms for the kids amusements/rides and the BBQ have been rolling in, but there are lots of families still yet to return pre-order forms. The P&C need these returned to assist them in ensuring that adequate quantities of food and drinks are available for all our guests; and also to have sufficient time to get BBQ tokens and ride wristbands distributed to each family. If you have invited neighbours or extended family members you can include their orders on your form (or print and send a separate one). All pre-order forms are due back this Friday. Please do your best to return the forms by the deadline. In this section next week, I will print an extensive list of important information that you will need to know in order to be ready and to make the most out of Carols. For now, allow me to clarify what the students should wear on the night. If your child’s class has any specific costume requests, you will have already received a note outlining that request from the class teacher. If you have not received a note, the teachers ask that your children come dressed in bright Christmas coloured clothes (i.e. greens and reds). They can certainly wear Christmas t-shirts, antlers, Santa hats and other Christmas related paraphenalia that helps them to get into the spirit of Carols. The staff will also be decked out in various forms of Christmas attire, we’d love it if parents would join us too in dressing for the occasion. Thanks in advance for your support. Although Carols is one important focus of next week, equally important is our annual Presentation Day Assembly on Wednesday. Although, all families whose children have been selected to receive an award during this assembly should have received a letter informing you that your child is being acknowledged in some way, I would like to extend an invitation for all families to join us for this whole-school celebration if you are able. Whilst individual students are acknowledged for their hard work and achievment throughout the year, it is a celebration for our entire community. The Presentation Day assembly begins at 9:30am. If you are joining us, please aim to arrive and be seated by 9.20am for a prompt start at 9:30am. Finally, sincere congratulations to the following Year 5 students who were elected by their peers to be our School Captains in 2018: Lincoln Davies, Archie King, Ella Andrews and Java Murray. Principal’s Message

We are now officially 10 sleeps away from our Cardiff South P&C Christmas Carols

event and whilst it is quite unnerving how quickly the days are passing by, the students

and staff are getting really excited about next week’s Carols event. If you haven’t yet

had the time to lock in on Carols and what you need to do to be ready; this week is the

week to ENGAGE. Pre-order forms for the kids amusements/rides and the BBQ have

been rolling in, but there are lots of families still yet to return pre-order forms. The P&C

need these returned to assist them in ensuring that adequate quantities of food and

drinks are available for all our guests; and also to have sufficient time to get BBQ

tokens and ride wristbands distributed to each family. If you have invited neighbours or

extended family members you can include their orders on your form (or print and send

a separate one). All pre-order forms are due back this Friday. Please do your best to

return the forms by the deadline.

In this section next week, I will print an extensive list of important information that you

will need to know in order to be ready and to make the most out of Carols. For now,

allow me to clarify what the students should wear on the night. If your child’s class has

any specific costume requests, you will have already received a note outlining that

request from the class teacher. If you have not received a note, the teachers ask that

your children come dressed in bright Christmas coloured clothes (i.e. greens and reds).

They can certainly wear Christmas t-shirts, antlers, Santa hats and other Christmas

related paraphenalia that helps them to get into the spirit of Carols. The staff will also

be decked out in various forms of Christmas attire, we’d love it if parents would join us

too in dressing for the occasion. Thanks in advance for your support.

Although Carols is one important focus of next week, equally important is our annual

Presentation Day Assembly on Wednesday. Although, all families whose children have

been selected to receive an award during this assembly should have received a letter

informing you that your child is being acknowledged in some way, I would like to

extend an invitation for all families to join us for this whole-school celebration if you

are able. Whilst individual students are acknowledged for their hard work and

achievment throughout the year, it is a celebration for our entire community. The

Presentation Day assembly begins at 9:30am. If you are joining us, please aim to arrive

and be seated by 9.20am for a prompt start at 9:30am.

Finally, sincere congratulations to the following Year 5 students who were elected by

their peers to be our School Captains in 2018:

Lincoln Davies, Archie King, Ella Andrews and Java Murray.

P&C Christmas Raffle

Last Thursday each family should have received a 10-ticket Christmas raffle booklet to sell to family, neighbours

and friends. There are over 20 wonderful prizes to win in this year’s raffle and all money raised will go towards

purchasing new outdoor playground equipment for our students. There are plenty more ticket books available,

so if you would like more to sell, please see the office staff to be allocated more books. Ideally, it would be best

to return sold books first before collecting additinal books. Please aim to have all tickets sold and returned to

school with the correct money by next Wednesday 6th December.

Carols Committee Meeting

The last Carols committee meeting is scheduled for this afternoon at 5pm in the library.

Arborist on Site

Please note that tomorrow, an arborist will be on-site conducting remedial works to several of our large trees.

Some areas of the school will need to be isolated to ensure the safety of our staff, students and visitors. This

may also mean that access in some areas of the school will be restricted during the day and possibly during the

morning drop-off and afternoon school pick-up. Your patience and understanding while these works are being

carried out is appreciated.

Kumaridha AECG

The final Kumaridha AECG meeting for the year will take place tomorrow evening at 5pm at Warners Bay High

School. All Aboriginal families and community members are invited to attend and light refreshments will be

available.

Home Reading Program

Our school home reading program continues right up until Monday 11th December. We would really like the

students to continue to aim to read for 10 minutes a night and record their home reading in their journals.

Friday is still what we call ‘Journal day’. The students can bring their journals into their teacher on any Friday

and the class teacher will update their records for the number of nights read. All students that have read for

140+ nights by the 11th December will be invited to a special movie afternoon on Thursday 14th December.

CBA Student Banking For those students who have reached banking milestones with ‘tokens to spend’, please be aware that the final order day for awards will be this Friday 1st December.

Cardiff High School – 2018 year 7 enrolments

Staff at CHS have informed us that there are still a number of outstanding enrolment forms for Year 6 students

enrolling at CHS in Year 7 next year. Parents of Year 6 students are reminded that these forms must be returned

this week.

Year 7 Orientation

Parents of Year 6 students going to Cardiff High in 2018 should have received a letter mailed home from the

high school, outlining the Year 7 Orientation Day on Tuesday 5th December.

An additional note was also sent home with students last Tuesday, with details of the day and the plan to walk

back to Cardiff South PS with Ms Ellis at the conclusion of the Orientation Day. Students attending should arrive

at Cardiff High School Hall at 9am to meet Ms Ellis and have their name marked off the roll. Please have your

child return the permission slip to the school office by this Friday, 1st December.

There is also a parent information session in the evening from 5.00pm-7:00pm. As well as general information about

transition to high school, there will be a uniform display and parents will be able to purchase book packs, calculators,

aprons and various other apparel. Light refreshments will also be provided.

Lawn Bowls Report This term for sport, a group of Year 4 students had the opportunity to participate in lawn bowls at Cardiff

Bowling Club. We walked down each week and were welcomed by a number of volunteers from the club who

spent the next 45 minutes explaining the rules, techniques and strategy involved in the game. We formed teams

of two or three and then had the chance to compete against our friends in a game. The bowlers watched us and

gave coaching advice throughout our games, which was very valuable and helped us to get better over the

weeks. Many of us even managed to hit the jack with our bowl as we got better! As a group we all agree that

lawn bowls is a cool sport to try. We REALLY appreciated the assistance given to us by the members of Cardiff

Bowling Club and letting us use their facilities. We would encourage anyone interested to look in previous

newsletters for the information about trying lawn bowls yourself after school with mum and dad. It is a game

that the whole family can play together in a relaxed atmosphere. If you don’t believe me read these testimonials

from some of the students who participated each week:

Lawn bowls was fantastic because we learnt how to lawn bowl and relax. Madi D

I LOVED the experience of learning how to bowl. Let’s see how my older brother,

Aston, can do! Jaeger M

Lawn bowls was a fun and exciting experience every Friday morning. Listening to

the instructors helped me to finally hit the jack! Tily L

I thought that lawn bowls was a great experience. It was fun and I learnt so

much. I liked it a lot. Lachlan T

I think lawn bowls was fun and a good sport to play. The fun thing was playing

each other. I enjoyed the walk as well as playing. Maddy E

I liked lawn bowls because you got to play against your friends. It’s a fun

sport. Alira C

After a walk to Cardiff Bowling Club people in Year 4 got to play lawn bowls. It’s a game where you have to

roll a bowl down at a little white ball called the jack. I had a really good time playing. Mackenzie W

I think lawn bowls was a great sport. I would love to go again. Ebony H

I liked lawn bowls because the instructors taught me how to bowl properly. Zophie Z-C

Hockey Gala Day

Last Friday, 30 of our students participated in a hockey gala day at the Newcastle Hockey Centre in

Broadmeadow. They attended a skills session run by the regional hockey coordinator Kate Jenner. Kate

represented NSW and Australia and was able to pass on some great advice and knowledge to our students.

After the skills session our students played against other schools in a round robin competition. As always, our

hockey players represented our school with pride and great

sportsmanship. They learnt new skills, played in teams with

students they haven’t played with before and learnt the basic

rules of hockey. I was very proud of their commitment to

their games and how happy they were to spend the day

learning something new.

Our parents and families were there to cheer them on and

help out when needed. Thank you to the parents who helped

with transport. Our students would not be able to try out

different sports and activities, if it wasn’t for the fantastic

support we get from you.

I would like to also thank Mrs Nash and Miss Wood for their

assistance with the teams.
