Commendations

As an NQT I am grateful for the wide range of teaching experience I was able to gain at YSJ. Whereas some of my other NQT colleagues in Luton have had the experience of 1 or 2 schools, I have been into 5 different classes in 4 different schools in my training alone. To add to this I also had the opportunity to study in the USA, allowing me the opportunity to visit schools and teach some lessons out there as well.

The lecturers are all friendly and experienced in the teaching world, drawing on their experiences to help you through the course and to prepare you for what to expect. This includes strategies for teaching EAL children, how to be a subject coordinator and generally what to expect in the classroom.

Many of the lectures incorporate up to date training of current legislations and frameworks, allowing you to go into your first job with as good as, if not better knowledge of the current strategies, (especially ICT) than many experienced teachers have.

Mitigating Circumstances procedures All Extension and Mitigating Circumstances requests are to be made at the very latest one day before the original hand-in date. For Mitigating Circumstances, students should be encouraged to approach staff as early as possible regarding difficulties that may affect submission of work. Extensions without mitigating circumstances can only be awarded a capped mark of 40. Students should first approach Module Tutors regarding potential difficulties.

Student is responsible for fully completing Request for Consideration of Mitigating Circumstances form. This cannot be done on their behalf, even if staff are aware of difficult circumstances. Only one form is required for modules delivered within the same Faculty but all modules should be clearly specified on the form.

Student should attach all relevant supporting evidence. Mitigating Circumstances are very unlikely to be granted without such evidence being provided.

Student should meet with their Year Leader (or a Head of Programme, if the Year Leader is not available) in order to discuss the Mitigating Circumstances Request. It is important that the form is complete at this stage.

Year Leader considers request (asking for further evidence if necessary) and informs both the student and HoP of the outcome.

Year Leader logs Mitigating Circumstances requests and retains copies of all forms for their own year group before passing the original on to the Education Office where it will be filed with all other Mitigating Circumstances requests. Admin Staff annotate Hand-In list.

Year Leader informs affected Module Directors and ATs.

Module Director ensures that Hand-In list for Admin Staff identifies those students whose work is not expected on the original agreed hand-in day.

Module Tutor/Module Director agree revised submission date with student (if applicable).
