Maternity Support Services (MSS)
Every woman’s needs are unique; we
encourage you to begin our program as
early in your pregnancy as possible.
Prenatal care can help prevent
complications and inform women about
important steps they can take to ensure a
healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
We can help with initiation and
successful breastfeeding.
Infant Case Management (ICM)
ICM improves the welfare of infants by
providing parents with information and
assistance for necessary medical, social,
educational and other services
throughout your infant’s first year.

children and families in Clallam County.

First Step can offer Maternity Support
Services and Infant Case Management
to you. We do not replace the very
important care of your doctor or WIC,
but work along side them to answer any
questions you might have, offer
support, and connect you to other
resources in Clallam County. You are
eligible for our Maternity Support
Services and Infant Case Management
throughout your pregnancy up to your
child’s first birthday.

In giving birth to our babies, we may
find that we give birth to new
possibilities within ourselves.

Professional Nursing Services
A registered nurse is available for questions
or concerns about your pregnancy or baby.
You have the choice of home or office
visits.
Registered nurses provide support if you
have medical complications such as pre-term
labor, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
Nurses can provide home visits after you
bring your baby home.
We have lactation consultants to help with
breast-feeding and/or bottle-feeding, and to
provide information and referrals for breast
pumps.
Brief counseling.
Understanding the emotional changes you
and your family have during pregnancy.
Discussing ways to prepare you and your
family for the arrival of your new baby.
Addressing financial challenges.
Referrals to community resources for your
housing, clothing, diapers etc.
A Certified Dietician is available to
assist you with:
Discussing healthy eating while pregnant,
after delivering your baby, and while
breastfeeding.
Information about controlling your weight
during and after pregnancy.
Guidance on managing morning
sickness, heartburn, constipation, or fatigue.
Your diet if you have diabetes, high blood
pressure, anemia, or allergies.
Support with meeting your nutrition goals.
Maternity Support Services
A Behavioral Health Worker can
help you with:
Providing support groups that offer peer
support for mothers who are facing
emotional challenges.
Infant Case Management
Home-visiting program for parents of
infants 2 months to 1 year of age. Infants
are required to be present at each visit.
Start the program anytime up to 1 year
of age.
Scheduled visits with families at First
Step or in their home.
Provides parents with information and
assistance to access medical, social,
educational and environmental services.
Shares linkages to community resources.
Families get the support they need to
help their child grow and thrive.
Child must be receiving Medicaid.
