The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which one becomes a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church. Participants can be those who are unbaptized and have no Christian background, or those who were baptized and raised in other Christian communities. 1 Peter Bible Study The Bible Study is coming back this September! Due to the ongoing pandemic, the study will be online. We plan to use an interactive format so that people will have the ability to ask questions. We will announce very shortly what format that we will be using. In addition, you will receive the notes in advance so that you can follow along. We will begin on Tuesday, September 8th from 9:15am to 11am. The first book that we will study will be 1 Peter. St. Peter wrote to the churches in Asia Minor. He dealt with doctrinal issues, as well as the meaning of suffering. We get a powerful glimpse into the early life of the Church through Peter's eyes. “Virtual” Bereavement Support Group The Way of Hope is a Christ-centered Catholic support group for the bereaved. Sessions are intended for those who have lost a spouse, family member or close friend through death. The program is presented in a 5-session format. Sessions will focus on finding meaning and direction during the grief process through the witness of the saints and the renewal of our faith. Sessions will be coordinated by Pastoral Associate Michael Lewandowski and Parish Nurse Sandy Razka. There is no fee for this program.

Understanding Today’s First Reading (Isaiah 22:19-23) Today’s first reading is from the prophet Isaiah, who unveils for us a very important feature about David’s kingdom. Let us delve into the passage that has such significance for the Church.

This reading begins with the Lord thrusting Shebna, the master of the palace, out of his office. The Lord then decreed that Eliakim would take Shebna’s place in this sacred office. The Lord declared that Eliakim would be a father to the people of Jerusalem and the house of Judah. In addition, Eliakim would possess the key to the House of David. The key, as articulated by Dr. Scott Hahn, biblical scholar and professor, symbolized authority and pointed to succession. This office of Eliakim was not static, but rather was a feature of the kingdom that carried with it great authority. To emphasize the power of Eliakim’s authority, the Lord says, “What he opens, no one shall shut, what he shuts, no one shall open.” (Isaiah 22:22).

Before we go further, it is important that we understand the design of the Davidic kingdom. I was very fortunate to study David’s kingdom under Dr. Scott Hahn. He highlighted some of the features that I will discuss. First, it is important to note that the kingdom of David was a divine kingdom. God established this kingdom and made promises regarding it. Thus, the Lord spoke, “When your [David’s] days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son.” (2 Samuel 7:12-14a). God promised David an eternal kingdom. God also promised David a “name”, a dynasty, and that He would have a father/son relationship with David’s successors. Within David’s kingdom, the king held full power. However, second in power to the king was the king’s mother, who ruled with her son. Her title was “Queen Mother”. She would collect petitions from people in the kingdom and present them to her son. Other features of this kingdom were an emphasis on the todah sacrifice, or “thank-offering.” The “thank-offering”, in Greek, is translated into Eucharist. Thus, in David’s kingdom, they would offer bread and wine in sacrifice to God. Also, within this kingdom, there was the master of the palace, who held full authority in the kingdom while the king was away. Therefore, what he decreed could not be contradicted. He possessed the “keys of the kingdom.” Since God promised David that his kingdom would be without end, the Jews were waiting for a Messiah, who would be a descendant of David, to revive the kingdom. Jesus was in the line of David and preached about the kingdom. When Jesus spoke of the kingdom, every Jew would have thought about David’s kingdom.

Many of the features of David’s kingdom were not simply reestablished by Christ, but were fulfilled in a way beyond all imagining. For example, the Blessed Virgin Mary became the Mother of all the faithful. Second, the bread and wine of the todah or thanksgiving sacrifice became the Body and Blood of Jesus. Lastly, Christ established a “master of the palace”, who is, of course, St. Peter. We read in Matthew’s Gospel when Jesus asked his apostles about who they believed him to be. Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16). Jesus responded to Peter, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 22:19). Thus, Peter became the leader of the Church.

Isaiah did not simply narrate events that unfolded hundreds of years before the Messiah, but prepared the people for the coming of the Messiah and the Catholic Church. This was especially witnessed in today’s reading with Eliakim and the keys. Let us always realize that the gift of the holy and Catholic Church is something instituted by God.
