KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – LIGHT UP FOR CHRIST
In a time when all things religious are being discouraged and
swept away, it’s refreshing to know that the Knights of
Columbus established the “Keep Christ in Christmas”
campaign to remind people that Christmas is above all a Holy
Day celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. To help deliver the
“Keep Christ in Christmas” message Order wide, the Knights of
Columbus annually begin the Christmas season with the “Light
Up For Christ” celebration. The ceremonial lighting of a
Christmas tree or Christmas display is just part of the
celebration. Please join us on Friday - December 8, 2017 @
8.00 pm (Feast of Immaculate Conception Mass at 7:00 pm)
in the foyer of the Church local time when we would throw the
switch to “Light Up For Christ.” a great tradition and help
spread the joyful tidings of Christmas followed by light
refreshments. The “Light Up For Christ” celebration is a
wonderful way to kick off the season and celebrate with brother
Knights, family and friends.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
In the following weeks leading up to Christmas, we will be
presenting the Infancy Narratives of chapters one and two of
both Saints Matthew and Luke. They are the only two of the
four evangelists who provide us with the “Christmas Story.”
We begin today’s installment by looking at Chapter 1 and 2 of
St Luke’s gospel. Luke was not only a doctor but an artist. He
wrote in an artistic way the Infancy Narrative of Jesus. While
short on history, chapters one and two of St. Luke’s gospel is full
of theology. Consider the following way in which these two
chapters are written by St. Luke.
St. John the Baptist Jesus
*annunciation to a parent annunciation to a parent
Zechariah by the angel Mary by the angel
Gabriel (1:5-23) Gabriel (1:26-38)
*the mother, Elizabeth the mother, Mary
Praises God (1:24-25) praises God (1:46-55)
*birth, circumcision, birth (2:1-7)
name (1:57-64)
*awe & wonderment by awe & wonderment by
by neighbors (1:65-66) shepherds (2:8-20)
circumcision & name
(2:21)
*praise to God by praise to God by
Zechariah (1:67-79) Simeon & Anna
(2:25-38)
*child grew strong (1:80) child grew strong (2:40)
No gospel begins the story of Jesus’ public ministry without the
ministry of St. John the Baptist. St. Luke keeps to the same motif
with regard to the Infancy Narrative. As great as St. John was,
Jesus is presented as ever greater. If the mother of St. John is
elderly and barren and God overcomes that barrier, then ever
greater is the fact that the mother of Jesus has vowed to live the
life of a virgin, and God is also able to overcome that barrier.
We are introduced to the archangel Gabriel. In the Old
Testament, Gabriel was sent by God to the prophet Daniel to
forewarn the Hebrew people that it will be a long time, “seventy
weeks of years” (Dan 9:24) for the Messiah to come. Some
interpreters conclude that the “seventy weeks of years” is
symbolic of 490 years (since “a week” of years would symbolize
seven years, and 70 x 7 = 490 years). Now that the “seventy
weeks of years” are up, Gabriel appears to Zechariah in a parallel
way to Daniel. Just as Gabriel appeared to Daniel in response to
his prayer at the hour of the temple sacrifice to announce the
“seventy weeks of years” so the same celestial being visits
Zechariah in response to his prayer at the hour of the temple
sacrifice to announce the dawn of the new covenant. This time,
it is not 490 years, but 490 days which will play an important
role in St. Luke’s Infancy Narrative. Since for the Jews, a month
was just 30 days, consider the following 490 Days:
CHILDREN’S LITURGY CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Ministry for the Children's Liturgy is having a Christmas party
on Saturday, December 16, from 2:00-4:00 at the Christian Life
Centre. There will be food, games, and a visit from Santa. Find
out more at our registration table. Registration for the party will be
after the Saturday 5:00pm Mass on December 2, and after the
Sunday 8:30am, 10:15am, and 12:00 noon Masses on December 3.
(Questions and Answers Cont’d)
Day 1 Elizabeth conceives John the Baptist
Day 180 Mary conceives Jesus in the sixth month
of Elizabeth’s pregnancy (180 days later)
Day 450 Jesus is born 9 months (or 270 days)
later
Day 490 Jesus is presented in the Temple 40
days later
(We continue looking at St. Luke’s Infancy Narrative in next
week’s bulletin).
Please bring the UNWRAPPED gift with the tag taped to it and
put it in our boxes in the foyer on or before December 3rd. Thank
you for your continued support and for helping those in our
community experience the love and true meaning of Christmas.
