THE ARMS OF THE UNIVERSITY
The Richmond Herald of Arms, Mr. J.P. Brooke·little, on behalf of the King of Arms, will today present to the Deputy Chancellor the official Letters Patent for the Grant of Arms which authorises the University to bear and use arms. The vellum document bears at the top the Royal Arms, those of the Earl Marshal and the College of Arms. In the left hand margin the arms of the grantee are painted. The seals of the granting Kings of Arms are attached to the foot of the document by ribbons.
The University submitted a Memorial seeking the grant in December, 1975 after an extensive period of investigation and consultation. During this time the Ceremonial Committee of Council was guided in its deliberations by its heraldic adviser, Mr. A. lan Ferrier of Brisbane, who first submitted suggestions for arms in May, 1974. The formal presentation of the Grant now takes place on the occasion of the visit of the Richmond Herald to Australia.
The principal elements incorporated in the arms of the University are the blue of the sea, the gold o f the sand and the red of the Jllawarra flame tree. The wave motion used in the popular University Year Symbol has been retained in the partition line. The open book often used for educational institutions has also been included.
No motto has yet been chosen.
The blazon is: "AZure an open book proper bound gold on a chief wavy or three cinquefoils gules."
