A warm welcome to the Diocesan Midweek Residential Conference. Those of you who attended the conferences in 2012 and 2014 will know what a valuable and worthwhile time we have ahead of us. Considerable time, money and resources have been invested in making this a high point in the life of the Diocese and I am delighted that you can contribute and participate. Our shared diocesan vision of Living God's Love has adopted the values of Generosity, Joy, Imagination and Courage, and these will be the thematic cornerstones of our conference and of our speakers' addresses. My hope for this conference is of course that we might study and learn together, and also that we can draw together in worship and fellowship and allow God to refresh us in our ministry and faith. I want to thank Neil Kelley and his team who have worked hard to organise the conference; their excellent work will continue over our days in residence here. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to approach a member of the conference planning group, who can be identified by a pink lanyard, or a member of the Bishop's Staff. I commend to you the conference chaplains, Michael and Lesley Sanders, and Suzanne Clackson, our resident member of the Clergy Counselling Service. They will able to meet with individuals and details of how you can do this are on page 5 & 6 of this conference handbook. It is my prayer that our time together will be marked by generosity amongst ourselves, will express the joy of our faith, will be enthused by imagination and will be underlined by a renewed courage to share the Good News with those we serve.

The conference chaplains are Michael and Lesley Sanders. Michael spent over forty years in stipendiary ministry in a variety of settings including university chaplaincy at Cambridge, suburban ministry in Surrey and the West Midlands, a long spell of urban ministry in the Black Country, international chaplaincy in The Hague in The Netherlands, and looking after nine country churches in Gloucestershire.

He writes, "I have enjoyed working in teams, and also having the privilege of being a training incumbent with nine Deacons. In retirement, when watching football and cricket allows (I am a longsuffering Aston Villa supporter), I help in Gloucester Diocese, taking Services, and am a Bishops' officer for retired clergy, I have also undertaken Locums in the Netherlands and France. I have found Ministry in the Anglican Church often demanding but deeply fulfilling." Lesley taught in London, and then part time in Surrey and the West Midlands, and also worked voluntarily in the Hague.

She writes “Over the years I have been involved pastorally in the varied churches and communities of which we have been a part, particularly in the area of bereavement support. Due to our moves I have much experience of helping our family settle into very different situations and of beginning anew again myself. We continue to learn a new way of being in retirement, enjoying spending more time with our growing family and meeting up with friends as well as getting involved in our church and locally. I enjoy tennis, reading, art history, visiting London, also finding a little more space in the diary after many busy years. It will be a privilege to be alongside you all for these few days.'' Michael and Lesley can be found around the conference and will be available in the Amber and Buxton rooms in Lakeside. Please talk to them to arrange a time to see them.

The Clergy Counselling Service will be present at this year’s conference to provide psychological help, and is also available on your return home. It provides a professional, confidential service for all clergy and/or spouses or civil partners. The service has the full backing of Bishop Alan and his staff but is completely independent. You may like to take this opportunity to talk about something that troubles you but is not specific: pervasive anxiety, under- or over-activity, a sense of loss of meaning. You may be facing change through a new role or parish or because retirement is getting close. You may have relationship difficulties in your personal and family life or with colleagues or parishioners.

Suzanne Clackson, a psychotherapist and one of the managers of the service, will be present on Monday and Tuesday. You can book to see her (anonymously) by ticking a time slot on the list on the Kinder Room in the Derbyshire Suite, for any time other than worship and meal times.

Liz Sergeant www.lizsergeant.co.uk is a British artist whose work examines the artist’s role as a catalyst for change, through interventions, installations and playful disruptions. Working across a variety of media, including performance, Liz’s practice explores the way art can be experienced – in galleries, public spaces, heritage sites or schools – and tests the notion of art as a participatory outcome and/or collaborative event. Her work is often text-based, and inspired by her love of language, nurtured during previous careers as a linguist, language teacher and recruitment manager for a global consultancy firm. Since graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in 2012, Liz’s work has been selected for exhibition by SpaceStation 65, Re:Kindle Public Arts, Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects, and most recently Moving Image Margate 2016, the Satellite programme at Whitstable Biennale and London’s ArtLicks festival. Liz is an Arts Award advisor and a regular guest artist in local primary schools, running workshops and large-scale projects to engage and inspire the children’s creativity. She is a founding member of the artists’ collective Cross Arts Projects (XAP).

Prayer and worship lie at the heart of our calling and resourcing for ministry. Throughout our Diocese and in our own parishes and worship communities there is a great diversity of worship styles. During our time together we hope to provide opportunities for everyone to come together each day for prayer, music and the sharing of the Eucharist. These services will be facilitated by clergy from the diocese. For the CW services of Morning and Evening prayer, please bring with you

your copy of Daily Prayer or you may prefer to use the app on your

electronic devices and/or phones.

In order to be more environmentally friendly we are not producing service booklets for the main acts of worship but rather the necessary texts will appear on screens. Should you wish to download these services please do so by visiting: www.stalbans.anglican.org/ministry/midweek-conference/

There are two worship times when a variety of worship styles are on offer and they are: Tuesday 7.45am Wednesday 6.00pm CW Morning Prayer (Chapel) BCP Evening Prayer (Derbyshire Suite 2) Iona Worship (Orchard Hall) Taize worship (Orchard Hall) Godly Play (Derbyshire Suite 2) Prayer before the Sacrament (Chapel) Guided Meditation (Derwent Room) Word and Spirit (Derbyshire Suite 3) Prayer for Healing (Derbyshire Suite 4) Prayer for Healing (Derbyshire Suite 4) We are delighted to welcome back Andrew Maries as our resident musician. Andrew is known to Bishop Alan from their time together at Lee Abbey. He now works for Exeter Diocese as consultant for liturgy and music, but also promotes greater breadth and understanding of music in worship across the styles and traditions through the work of The Keynote Trust. Recent work has involved facilitating various music workshop days in a number of Dioceses including Guildford, Norwich, Manchester, Chester, Blackburn and Exeter. He is also putting together modules for a course on music groups for RSCM Church Music Skills. His main instrument is the oboe. The Conference Team is very grateful to the Diocesan Worship and Liturgical Committee who have helped with organising the worship we will offer over these days. Finally, if you would like to be involved in the services as readers, intercessors or Eucharistic ministers, please indicate that on the sign-up sheets available as you enter the Derbyshire Hall.

Our Bishops talk about some of the objects that carry meaning for them. But who is telling the truth and who is bluffing? Get to know our Bishops a little better as they try and persuade us of their ownership of and attachment to a fascinating and diverse assortment of belongings. We will learn a little more about what motivates our Bishops and makes them tick, and also discover who is the most convincing when pitted against some of the sharpest wits in the Diocese!

Meals Meals are served buffet style from the designated servery (hot counters) in each dining room. The staff will then come to the table to clear (no need to stack plates).

At each lunch and evening meal we now also have a salad bar providing a lighter option.

With the exception of breakfast, tea and coffee after each meal is provided in the lounge areas, rather than at the dining rooms.

The hot drinks machines are available daily from 7.30am – 10.30pm.
