Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the IMI team, we would like to welcome you to the 17th Annual IMI Conference on Intercultural Relations. We are delighted that we were able to gather such a diverse cohort of passionate and energetic community leaders. Please review the program and the wonderful list of speakers and panelists we have here today.

We have invited leaders from business, nonprofit, government and international organizations to discuss what cultural competence means in their respective sectors, how it affects their organization, their work force and the market or population they serve. And we are inviting interculturalists, trainers, and scholars to engage with these leaders in a discussion of best practices, potential solutions to cross-cultural requirements, and lessons learned. We want to expand our community of practice and provide a forum to learn from each other and innovate.

We would like to give a special thanks to our keynote speaker, John Zogby of Zogby Analytics, an internationally respected pollster, opinion leader, best-selling author and philanthropist. He has been gracious enough to debut his new research and his new book, We Are Many, We Are One, at our conference, which is hot off the press this March.

John Zogby, founder of the “Zogby Poll” and the Zogby companies, is an internationally respected pollster, opinion leader and best-selling author.

Zogby writes weekly columns on Forbes.com and U.S. News and World Report and contributes monthly to Politics magazine and News Corp’s The Daily. Dean Foster, President, DFA International, a Dwellworks companyAs president of DFA International, a Dwellworks Company, New York, Dean Foster conducts cross-cultural training worldwide and consults on intercultural business issues with most Fortune 1000 companies around the globe. For over twenty years, Dean has played a major role in the development of the intercultural training field: formerly he was Founder and Managing Director of Berlitz Cross-Cultural Worldwide, Vice President GMAC/Windham Intercultural, and founder of Cross-Cultural Consulting Associates, New York.

Julia Gaspar Bates, President, Intercultural Alliances As President of Intercultural Alliances, Julia has designed and delivered customized training programs and seminars for thousands of executives, students and educators, military personnel and governmental and non-governmental workers from around the world. She has delivered workshops on four continents in multiple foreign languages focusing on more than a dozen cultures. Past and present clients include companies and organizations such as Sodexo, Sanofi Pasteur, Areva,

Ansaldo STS, Foreign Service Institute, International Monetary Fund, Johns Hopkins University and Boston Public Schools, among others.

Josebe Bilbao-Henry, Manager, Language and Culture Program, The World BankJosebe Bilbao-Henry works with a team of professionals who design and deliver language learning solutions to help WBG staff communicate with their clients in Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. She also leads the intercultural competence program and works with teams in several regions to foster collaboration across diverse cultural mindsets. Before joining the Bank, Josebe was Director of Spanish Studies in LanguageOne, where she designed and managed a Spanish curriculum for adult professionals. She was in charge of client relations with major law firms and non-profits in the D.C. area where the company provided language-learning services.

Apoorva Gandhi,Vice President, Multicultural Affairs, Marriott International, Inc.As Vice President for Multi-Cultural Affairs for Marriott International, Apoorva Gandhi is responsible for creating and executing an externally-focused global strategy that builds preference and loyalty from diverse customer segments for the Marriott portfolio of brands. Before joining Marriott, Mr. Gandhi was a senior consulting manager in Accenture’s Communications and High Tech practice for more than a decade, where he managed merger and integration programs as well as process reengineering efforts for large telecom clients. He also led diversity programs at Accenture.

Sonya Grier, Professor, Marketing Department, Kogod School of Business, American UniversityProfessor Grier conducts interdisciplinary research on topics related to target marketing, race in the marketplace, the social impact of commercial marketing, and social marketing. Her current research investigates the relationship between marketing activities, and consumer health, with a focus on obesity. Professor Grier has policy experience based on two years at the Federal Trade Commission, and also has practical industry experience in

Market Research, Brand Management and Marketing consulting. She is currently the Director of food marketing research for the African American Obesity Research Collaborative Network (AACORN).

J. Nadine Gracia, Director, Office of Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesDr. J. Nadine Gracia is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health and the Director of the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Under Dr. Gracia’s leadership, the Office of Minority Health oversees the implementation of the HHS Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities and the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities. A first-generation Haitian-American, Dr. Gracia is an advocate for minority and underserved populations and lectures nationwide on health disparities and health equity

Tawara Goode, Director, National Center for Cultural Competence, Georgetown University

Tawara Goode is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She has been on the faculty of the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development (GUCCHD), for the past 30 years and has served in many capacities. She is the director of the National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) at GUCCHD. She is also the Associate Director of the GUCCHD’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and focuses on

national level efforts to advance and sustain cultural and linguistic competence in this field.

Virginia Kase, Chief Operations Officer, CASA de MarylandVirginia Kase is Chief Operations Officer at CASA, the largest Latino and immigrant rights organization in the mid-Atlantic region and a leader in the immigrant rights and social justice movement. With over 20 years of experience in the non-profit sector, Ms. Kase manages the strategic growth, direction and daily operations of the organization. Prior to CASA she spent nearly nine years serving as the National Technical Assistance and Training Manager for the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise (CNE) in Washington, D.C.

Erin Loubier, Senior Director for Health and Legal Integration, Whitman-Walker HealthErin focuses on the critical collaborations between traditional health care services and legal services to promote patient health and wellness by addressing the social and legal determinants of health. Erin is a member of Whitman-Walker Health’s leadership team and oversees Legal Services, Public Benefits and Insurance Navigation, relations with third-party payors, including Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance companies, and payment models focusing on improving health and the patient experience. Erin came to Whitman-Walker in 1998 after receiving her law degree from

American University’s Washington College of Law. She is the recipient of the DCPCA’s 2013 Unsung Hero Award and the D.C. Bar Foundation’s 2011 Jerrold Scoutt Prize.

Ian Oliver, Director of Client Services, International Strategy and Implementation (ISI) ConsultantsAs Director of Client Services at International Strategy and Implementation Consultants, Mr. Oliver works closely with clients to ensure that market entry and growth strategies are optimized in line with their existing resources and internal corporate culture. Where relevant, he leads design and implementation of corporate responsibility activities and assists companies in maximizing opportunities as part of market strategy. Traveling regularly to target countries, Mr. Oliver identifies and meets with potential partners and distributors, solicits active support from local government representatives, and ensures client goals are being addressed as groundwork is laid. Mr. Oliver earned his Bachelor of Arts in International Service from The American University in Washington D.C. Prior to joining the ISI team, he held positions with several businesses and institutions where he led the growth of international portfolios through increased brand visibility, strategic planning and marketing, and new market project management and implementation.

Henry P. Stawinski III, Chief of Police, Prince George’s County As of January 1, 2016, Chief Stawinski has been serving as the Chief of Police for the Prince George’s County Police Department. He began his law enforcement career with the Department in 1992. The Department is comprised of 2,000 sworn and civilian members, commands a budget of $301 million and serves nearly one million residents across 486 square miles along the eastern border of Washington, D.C. From July of 2013 until his appointment as Chief

of Police, Chief Stawinski was responsible for the Bureau of Patrol which includes seven district stations and the Special Operations Division. As the Deputy Chief of Patrol, he led the transition to data-driven, prevention oriented policing. He also plays a key role in developing County Executive Rushern Baker’s, “Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative.” His three assignments prior to serving in Patrol include serving as the Deputy Chief for the Bureau of Forensic Science & Intelligence, Chief of Staff to the Chief of Police, and Deputy Inspector General for the Department.

Linda Turner, Manager, Tranforming Neighborhoods Initiative, Office of Prince George’s County Executives

As Manager of the Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative, Linda is responsible for the management oversight of the County Executive’s signature program which places the priority of government services within six challenged areas within the County. Linda began her career with Prince George’s County in 1986.Prior to her current position, Linda served five years as the Special Assistant to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Prince George’s County. In this role, she assisted the CAO in his oversight of the day-to-day operations of County government, as well as assisting with his executive leadership oversight for the

planning andimplementation of the County Executive’s top initiatives and programs, such as Strategic Management, and CountyStat.

Gary Weaver, Intercultural Managment Institute (IMI) & School of International Service (SIS), American UniversityFor forty-five years Gary Weaver has been a member of the faculty of the School of International Service at American University. He created and directed various academic programs including the Seminar on Managing a Multicultural Workforce, the Fulbright Pre-Academic Program, and the Community Studies Program, an academic program intended to meet the needs of inner city students attending American University. He founded and continues to serve as Research Director of the University’s Intercultural Management Institute (IMI), a program for training executives for international relocation and multicultural management and is publisher of the Intercultural Management Quarterly.

Carola Weil, Dean, School of Professional & Extended Studies (SPExS), American University

Dr. Carola Weil joined American University as founding dean of the School of Professional & Extended Studies in 2012, having previously served in leadership roles at the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism and taught public diplomacy and international relations. She has held teaching or research fellowship positions at the Harvard University J.F. Kennedy School of Government and George Washington University among others. Dr. Weil has also served as executive Director of the University of

Maryland-College Park’s and Women in International Security (WIIS), as well as Senior Program office at the U.S. Institute of Peace. As a German and U.S. national she has lived and worked around the world.

IMI StaffMaria Pekala, Acting Director, IMI

Maria Pekala has worked in the field of international affairs and international security for over 25 years. At the Intercultural Management Institute Maria leverages her prior experience in management consulting, on Capitol Hill, in a U.S. diplomatic mission, and in Washington think tanks, to develop programs to support nonprofit, private sector, and government entities with targeted training to support their mission and objectives. Maria has lived and worked abroad and has deep understanding of the challenges facing U.S. and foreign expatriates in

adjusting to new cultural contexts, performing in intercultural professional settings, and managing re-entry into one’s country of origin.

Hayley Kanlyn, Assistant Director for Programs, IMIAs Assistant Director for Programs, Hayley leverages more than 8 years of experience in NGO management, project management, and federal grant management to develop programs that multiply the impact and reach of IMI’s influence. Prior to IMI, Hayley managed local professional exchange programs, in Minneapolis, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. as part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP.) In each city, Hayley led the administration of IVLP professional exchange projects—arranging international visitors’ travel across the U.S., creating and managing programmatic content for short-term visitor exchanges, and leading social media strategic communication. Hayley worked and studied abroad in Northern Ireland, where she worked with at-risk youth on conflict resolution through the lens of fair and balanced journalism.

Heidi H. Ro, Program Coordinator, IMIHeidi is the newest member of the IMI team. She joined this February as a program coordinator and helped the team put the finishing touches on the 17th annual conference. She is also a first year master student at American University studying international security and cybersecurity at the School of International Service (SIS). Prior to joining IMI, Heidi had been an Executive Assistant to the CEO of a tech-based transportation think tank, a legal assistant, resident advisor and a Political Communications Manager for a congressional campaign in Seattle. Heidi has previous experience working with NGOs focused on human and sex trafficking in the Greater Seattle Area where she worked with the Seattle Police Department, the City of Seattle, and other districts to put in initiatives to identify and protect trafficked individuals.
