INTRODUCTION AND OPENING REMARKS:Nigel Blackaby, Director of Conferences, PennWell International Power Group, UK
Francesco Venturini, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager, Enel Green Power S.p.A., Italy
Kristian Ruby, Secretary General, Union of the Electricity Industry - EURELECTRIC , Belgium
Moderated by:DELIVERING DIGITALISATION: EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL FOR THE POWER SECTORFew technical advances have offered so much potential for change and benefit across the entire energy sector as digitalisation. Through an ever closer integration of the physical and digital worlds, it promises to both optimize operations and enable the drive towards decarbonisation.
As the Industrial Internet continues to grow, vast data sets can be collected and evaluated as more machines and devices are connected and come online.
But is the potential of digitalisation being exaggerated or are we only just beginning to appreciate the possibilities of connectivity and analytics? How can digital technology speed up the integration of renewable generation? At what stage of digital preparedness is the industry? Are we sufficiently alert to the attendant cyber security risks? How will new technology transform the structure of the industry and will it deliver what customers really want?
The panel debate moderated by presenter/writer LJ Rich, will feature expert views from leading utilities, equipment suppliers, and industry analysts.

A unique 5 MW hybrid battery storage system has been built in Aachen. M5BAT is a hybrid of different battery technologies that optimally combine storage capacities for periods of seconds, minutes or hours, whereby the storage system is designed for a total storage capacity of around 5 megawatt hours (MWh).
Construction of the large battery storage system began in August 2015 and commissioning was on Thursday 8th of September 2016. Since that day, the battery system has been connected to the local medium-voltage network and used to balance out the energy supply. During this time the trading of capacities on the energy market in real time will also be trialled.
The participants in the project are jointly investing €11.4 million in the development and testing of this world-first battery storage system. The project is also receiving funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy to the tune of € 6.7 million. This highly efficient and modular system offers a wide range of applications irrespective of location and therefore facilitates the integration of renewable energies. In this initial phase, the M5BAT project will be focusing on two particular aspects:• Testing the distributed provision of control reserve for stable grid operation• Electricity trading and the associated exploitation of electricity price arbitrageOn this tour you will enjoy an introductory presentation and film from Uniper about the facility before touring the storage buildings, the different battery rooms and containers (OPzV, OCSM, LMO, LTO), the extinguishing system and the control room. A light lunch is also included as part of this tour.
60 km west of Cologne on its Jülich site, DLR operates an experimental solar power station, Solarthermisches Versuchskraftwerk Jülich. Covering an area of about ten hectares, 2153 controlled mirrors, or heliostats, re-direct the incident solar radiation to the top of a 60 metre high solar tower where the focused sunlight is collected by a 22 m2 solar receiver and converted into heat. The receiver consists of a porous ceramic material that is constantly permeated by ambient air. In the process the air reaches a temperature of up to 700 degrees Celsius, and is then used to generate steam that, in turn, powers a turbine generator to produce electricity. The peak electric power output of the plant amounts to 1.5 megawatts.
The Jülich solar tower is both a pilot installation and a reference model for future commercial power plants envisaged for suitable locations in areas such as southern Europe, North Africa or the Arab peninsula
SynLight - The World’s Largest Artificial Sun As of 2017, DLR offers new test opportunities for CSP and solar chemistry. SynLight closes the gap between the power output of high-flux solar simulators on a laboratory scale and those of CSP and solar chemical demonstration facilities. SynLight’s novel modular design is characterized by 149 short-arc lamps. The reflectors can be variably adjusted, so that the light is focused either to a single point or may impinge distributed over a larger area. Moreover, it is possible to divide the light into up to three subsets to be used in parallel in three test chambers arranged side by side.
Köln Niehl 3 is a natural-gas fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant constructed adjacent to the existing Köln-Niehl 2 power plant in Niehl harbour, Cologne, Germany. The new plant was connected to the national grid in September 2015, and commenced commercial operation in September 2016.
The project was developed by RheinEnergie, with Alstom being the main contractor. The latter has also agreed to provide a 15-year maintenance agreement for the plant.
The new power plant generates 453 MW of electricity, enough to meet the needs of up to one million households, and approximately 265 MW of thermal heat, enough for approximately 30,000 households. The plant possesses fuel efficiency of approximately 85%, and electrical efficiency of 60%, making it one of the world’s most well-optimised co-generation power plants. It also helps offset 500,000t of CO2 emissions a year.

ADVISORY BOARD
PennWell wishes to thank the individual members of the Advisory Board for the generous donation of their time and expertise.
Our independent international advisory board, made up of more than 80 seasoned practitioners with many years’ of industry experience, have been hard at work developing the 2017 conference programme. These pictures taken at the Advisory Board Meeting in Hamburg last December give a small insight into the time and effort involved with putting together such an in-depth and thought provoking conference programme.
For a full list and details of the advisory board, please visit www.powergeneurope.com
John Epps – An AppreciationIt was with much sadness that we learned of the passing of John Epps in late December. John brought his great knowledge of the electricity industry, gained over a long and distinguished career, to the benefit of the POWER-GEN & Renewable Energy World Europe Advisory Board and his enthusiasm and desire to inspire others will be long remembered.
