CONFERENCE AGENDA 2020 LIFE WITH BRAIN INJURY “VIRTUAL” CONFERENCE

Thursday July 30, 2020

8:45- 9:00 AM Conference Sponsor: SC Developmental Disabilities Council 9:00- 9:15 AM Music and Video “Made Over” Written by Carolann Newton 9:15- 9:30 AM Welcome: Joyce Davis, CBIS, Executive Director Brain Injury Association of South Carolina 9:30- 10:30 AM Brain Injury 101: Causes, Consequences and Care Anne McDonnell, MPA, OTR/L, CBIST

This session will provide an in-depth overview of the causes and consequences of brain injury as well as information about symptoms and severity levels. There will also be discussion as to how unrecognized and untreated brain injury can create social and societal challenges, as well as the need for broad brain injury screening efforts. Lastly, attendees will learn of strategies and resources that can lead to better outcomes

10:30- 11:00 AM Break 11:00- Noon Together We Stand Kimbo Bridges, OTD, OTR/L, CBIS Ali Twilley, PT, DPT, CBIS

This is a time in our world, country, state, city, neighborhood, and life that coming together, supporting, depending, and collaborating with each other is more important than ever before. In this session an individual piece of art that depicts a forest representing each of our own forests will be completed by an actual therapy group. As this symbolic picture is created, there will be a discussion of needs of our neighbors and exactly how we can come together to meet those needs. Discrimination is not a new concept but those with disabilities are often forgotten and now is a time to come together and discuss how to keep those with brain injuries from being overlooked. All people have a role in helping others and can work together as one in the process to be a bigger voice. When the pieces of the picture are completed, they will be put together for a photo and the verbiage "Together WE Stand" will be added digitally.

2:00- 3:00 PM KEYNOTE: Opportunity is Knocking: Get Up and Open the Door!

Anne McDonnell, MPA, OTR/L, CBIST

Executive Director, Brain Injury Association of Virginia

Despite recent advances in awareness and treatment of brain injury, large

numbers of individuals are unable to live in the community of their choice due

to insufficient funding, inaccessible services, and incomprehensible policies. An

engaged coalition of people with brain injury, family caregivers and

professionals can and should create opportunities to improve the system of

care. Although seen as intimidating by some, advocacy can take many forms,

and everyone can do it. This session will focus on the different components of

advocacy, discuss advocacy versus lobbying, provide advocacy resources, and

present a model of successful advocacy that has resulted in $6 million in

funding for community-based brain injury services in Virginia.
