Infection Prevention & Control in Health Care Facilities

Dr. Farhad Memarzadeh

Director, Division of Technical Resources

National Institutes of Health

Abstract

The importance and urgency for a conference such as this one cannot be underestimated. Our world is

experiencing dramatic climate change, geological upheavals, and newly emerging diseases that are

difficult to control or treat. Climate change may allow new microorganisms to flourish. Geological

upheavals may result in unsanitary conditions that become breeding grounds for disease dissemination. In

addition, we are an increasingly mobile world and disease spreads across borders and continents relatively

easily. We need an international army of experts from all walks of science, bioenvironmental and

bioengineering and technology to attack the numerous biological consequences of natural events in order

to improve quality of life and insure the future of mankind. Although, as yet we are not able to control

acts of nature, our challenge is to revolutionize approaches to handle the consequences of natural and

manmade disasters in ways that benefit the global population. Our task is to find innovative ways to

profile, quantify and track diseases, apply technologies to contain and minimize disease dissemination

and optimize our ability to respond to crisis’ and disasters in meaningful ways that alleviate pain and

suffering. Additionally, it would be advantageous if these approaches were economical, efficient, and

easily implemented.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is one of the most important environmental health problems. Unhealthy IAQ is

caused by poor or inadequate ventilation and exposure to one or more contaminant sources in a building.

Because of the population they serve, health care facilities pose a unique set of conditions related to

indoor air quality that require particular attention from those responsible for infection prevention efforts,

both clinical and engineering.

A significant portion of the occupants in a health care facility are patients who have preexisting health

problems and are more likely than the general population to have depressed immune systems. This fact

increases the susceptibility of these patients to building ‐related illness and exposure to airborne

microorganisms. Complicating a patient’s vulnerability is direct and indirect exposure to communicable

disease agents, which can result if visitors, family, and health care personnel do not take proper

Page 18: Conference Program Bangkok... · Mechanical Engineering and Technology (1) ..... 21 Education (1) / Psychology ..... 23 Materials Science and Engineering (1) / Electrical and Electronic

16

precautions such as hand or respiratory hygiene when in contact with the susceptible patient. People with

potentially infectious illness in a facility who talk, sneeze, cough, or touch surfaces with contaminated

hands may be a source of these disease agents, especially if they are in direct contact with patients or

produce short-range aerosols within 6 feet of a susceptible patient or coworker.

Over the next three days, this intersection of knowledge, this meeting of the minds, this international

collaborative and multidisciplinary approach will be our early attempt at attacking these problems. We

must have a vision for the future and we must be diligent, cooperative, and resolute in achieving our goals.

We will succeed in this effort through shared knowledge, dialogue, and cooperation here and at future

conferences like it.

Cardboard Over-Packaging of Domestic Products: The Addition to the Trash

Mountain and Possible Solutions for its Reduction

Dr. Anthony Johnson

Professor

Seoul National University of Science and Technology

Abstract

An increasing global population demands more and more products which usually require some form of

packaging, but many of the products can be considered to be “over-packaged”. Packaging is really an

extra product which is often used once and discarded into an ever-increasing trash mountain. Materials

must be sourced, transported and manufactured into the packaging product. This is then used to wrap the

primary product, only to be discarded when the consumer arrives home with his new purchase.

The materials used in packaging vary from glass and steel to paper, cardboard and plastics which

complicate the process of environmentally sensitive disposal. What happens to the discarded packaging?

How much packaging is created? Is there legislation in place and who is responsible?

This paper investigates domestic packaging, defining the types and materials and focusing on cardboard.

The investigation continues into current disposal techniques, legislation and suggests opportunities to

reduce the packaging volume.

Key Words: Packaging, Over packaging, cardboard, Trash, Waste

Transitioning from an Entrepreneurial Idea to Community-Engaged

Scholarship: The Development of Coordinated Distributed Agriculture

Dr. Keith H. Sakuda

Associate Professor

University of Hawaii – West Oahu

Abstract

Universities are often tasked with discovering and transmitting knowledge to future generations for the

purpose of improving the quality of life, but academic research often disconnects faculty from that goal.

Peer-reviewed publications are the primary means of faculty evaluation and promotion, but for those

outside of academia, “quality of life” does not exist in journals or monographs.

This presentation will introduce the emerging field of community-engaged research, a movement to

connect researchers with local partners to discover and transmit knowledge for the direct purpose of

improving the quality of life for a community. By incorporating community stakeholders throughout the

research process, community-engaged research offers a new means to fulfill the academic goal of a better

world.

After briefly introducing community-engaged research the presenter will share his experiences working to

promote food sovereignty in the Pacific Islands through a new agricultural business model called

coordinated distributed agriculture. In addition to discussing the five principles of coordinated distributed

agriculture, a discussion of his experiences working with community partners will be used as a case study

for the benefits and challenges of engaged research.

Reviving the Construction Mindset in Our Genes

Abstract

The history of mankind can be seen as the history of learning. The history of human learning is closely

related to the history of tools because much of our learning is learning to create and use physical and

non-physical tools. If we examine the history of tools, we can understand some important aspects of

learning and education. Archaeology tells us that Homo habilis was the oldest known human species who

constructed and used tools more than 2 million years ago. Later, Homo sapiens began constructing

non-physical tools such as languages, stories, rules, etc, to facilitate construction of groups of humans

with common goals. Evolutionary Psychology also tells us that these kinds of construction started when

evolution shaped what we call the construction mindset in the genes of our ancestors.

According to the Urge Theory (Toda, 1981) this mindset includes emotions like curiosity and challenge

which were essential for learning to construct and use tools, and help and contribution which were useful

in constructing societies. However, the construction of new tools driven by these emotions changed the

very environments in which they had evolved to function. The invention of farming around 10,000 years

ago forced the humans to shift from nomadic to settled lives allowing the construction mindset to

construct ever larger tools, houses, and ever more sophisticated social structures like cities and countries.

Education was invented to help learning of these new tools and structures. Then only about a few hundred

years ago, less than 0.1% of the human history, they invented machines that used fossil energies which led

to the industrial revolution, changing our environments drastically and fundamentally. When our

environments change so rapidly, there is no time for our genes to adapt to them, and the mindset no longer

Page 22: Conference Program Bangkok... · Mechanical Engineering and Technology (1) ..... 21 Education (1) / Psychology ..... 23 Materials Science and Engineering (1) / Electrical and Electronic

20

functions properly in our modern environments. When using the complicated modern tools it is difficult

to feel curious about their mechanisms or feels challenged to construct them. Social mindset like help or

contribute are difficult to function in modern environments because the natural and human resources that

support our daily lives have become mostly invisible (Illich, 1973).

The history of tools has been so ironical: the construction mindset has constructed environments in which

it cannot function well, thus making it more difficult to do construction with proper motivations,

producing solutions that can address more sustainable benefits rather than short-term gains. What can

education do to fix this situation? School education was invented, in response to the difficulties of

learning the complex physical and non-physical tools, as a kind of mass production of learning.

However, schools are often not designed and operated in ways that the construction mindset functions

well.

In our keynote presentation, we propose some directions for revising our education to try to answer this

question, such as a curriculum to facilitate construction mindset and how to connect construction to

empathy development in students. We hope that these attempts will help us to escape from the vicious

cycle.
