Our faculty has extensive industry experience andwill prepare you for your career in courses cover-ing clinical and lifecycle nutrition, physiology,foodservice management, and recipe modifica-tion and menu development.

You will have the opportunity to join studentbranches of the Canadian Association of Food-service Professionals (CAFP) and the CanadianSociety of Nutrition Management (CSNM). As stu-dent members, you will build on your networkingskills in the foodservice and hospitality sectorand have the opportunity to apply to association-sponsored bursaries and scholarships.

Our program is recommended if you are startingyour career path, are currently working in thefoodservice or health-care industries, or if youhave a background in culinary arts or hospitality.

CSNM membership is a require-ment to work as a Food and Nutrition Manager(FNM) by Ministry of Health and Long-term Careand many acute care facilities.

Qualified students earn Advanced Food Safetycertification (ADVANCED.fst®) as part of the pro-gram.

WORK PLACEMENTWork placements are a valuable way to gain ex-perience in the field and build contacts. You willcomplete a five-week full-time placement in thehealth-care foodservice industry.

Work placements take place at the end of thefourth semester. Possible locations include:– long-term care and retirement facilities– hospitals, business/industry and education fa-

cilities– food suppliers, manufacturers and distributors– foodservice outlets.

STUDY ABROADQualified students in this program may apply toparticipate in experiential learning trips to theMediterranean/Italy where students have a handson experience in food culture, diet and lifestyleof the Mediterranean.

Qualified students in this program may also applyto a study abroad service learning trip to con-tribute to a global community. Past service learn-ing trips were to Nunavut and Nicaragua. Inaddition, eligible students have the opportunityto apply for a study abroad experiential trip toPeru.

Each year, we offer a variety of experiential learn-ing trip opportunities for students to studyabroad. Our annual short duration experientialtrips in May are approximately two weeks inlength. These faculty-lead study abroad trips areconfirmed in the fall semester.

OUR PROGRAMHumber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming)diploma program draws students from around theworld, preparing them to make a difference in thelives of people who are grieving the loss of a lovedone. This is the only English-speaking FuneralService Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensur-ing that what you’re learning is current and rele-vant. You will learn all aspects of funeral homeoperation, as well as the practical and theoreticalsides of funeral service. Embalming lab courseswill prepare you for the technical side of the pro-gram, while courses in issues of grief and be-reavement prepare you for the emotional side.Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming willenable you to explain all options to families. Busi-ness courses will help you understand the chal-lenges of operating a business.

Humber also offers a Funeral Director Class 2(Non-Embalming) program FD221.

YOUR CAREERTake your passion for caring for people into a ca-reer in funeral services. If you are a compassion-ate and tolerant person with a strong desire tohelp people of all sociocultural backgrounds, youwill have a fulfilling career in this field. Graduatescan work as a junior licensed funeral director, fu-neral pre-planner, transfer service sales represen-tative and in other roles. Graduates are alsoprepared for ownership and management oppor-tunities. Our graduate employment rate is approx-imately 85 per cent.

WORK PLACEMENTThe Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provin-cial regulator, has approved that students of theprogram shall complete a one-year work place-ment before they can be licensed.

To progress into Semester 3, students must starta full-time (paid) work placement in a funeralhome after they have successfully completedexams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3through 5, students complete their learning bydistance, and many of their assignments arebased on the practical experience they are gain-ing in the funeral home. Humber assists studentsfind their placements by working with our industrypartners to identify openings. However, studentsare responsible for finding their own work place-ment with a licensed funeral establishment in On-tario.

STUDY ABROADQualified students in this program may apply toparticipate in experiential learning trips to theMediterranean/Italy where students have a handson experience in food culture, diet and lifestyleof the Mediterranean.

Qualified students in this program may also applyto a study abroad service learning trip to con-tribute to a global community. Past service learn-ing trips were to Nunavut and Nicaragua. Inaddition, eligible students have the opportunityto apply for a study abroad experiential trip toPeru.

Each year, we offer a variety of experiential learn-ing trip opportunities for students to studyabroad. Our annual short duration experientialtrips in May are approximately two weeks inlength. These faculty-lead study abroad trips areconfirmed in the fall semester.

OUR PROGRAMHumber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming)diploma program draws students from around theworld, preparing them to make a difference in thelives of people who are grieving the loss of a lovedone. This is the only English-speaking FuneralService Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensur-ing that what you’re learning is current and rele-vant. You will learn all aspects of funeral homeoperation, as well as the practical and theoreticalsides of funeral service. Embalming lab courseswill prepare you for the technical side of the pro-gram, while courses in issues of grief and be-reavement prepare you for the emotional side.Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming willenable you to explain all options to families. Busi-ness courses will help you understand the chal-lenges of operating a business.

Humber also offers a Funeral Director Class 2(Non-Embalming) program FD221.

YOUR CAREERTake your passion for caring for people into a ca-reer in funeral services. If you are a compassion-ate and tolerant person with a strong desire tohelp people of all sociocultural backgrounds, youwill have a fulfilling career in this field. Graduatescan work as a junior licensed funeral director, fu-neral pre-planner, transfer service sales represen-tative and in other roles. Graduates are alsoprepared for ownership and management oppor-tunities. Our graduate employment rate is approx-imately 85 per cent.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION AND RECOGNITIONHumber is recognized as one of two programs(the only English program) in Ontario approvedby the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO).After completing the program and placement,graduates must complete an exam in order to belicensed.
