Thank you for the time away last week. It was a time of refreshing for us. Thank you to Craig Johnson and Marie Cole for leading worship in the Early Service and to Craig and the Praise Team for leading in the Late Service

Our 2012 Christmas musical is entitled, “Beyond the Manger” and the Celebration Choir is hard at work preparing for this much anticipated event. The Praise Band and some of our student singers will be involved as well this year. I’m excited about it and I hope you will make plans to attend on December 9th. Please pray for us as we continue in our preparations.

Sunday evening, December 16th, is our annual Christmas Praise event featuring King’Z

KidZ, Kid’Z PraiZe, the Symphonic Band, and Breakaway. Please mark your calendars for this date and bring your friends and family to support all these groups. I believe you will be blessed.

Before Christmas gets here, we look forward to our annual Thanksgiving Feast to be held

Sunday evening, November 18th. We will enjoy great church-wide fellowship, a wonderful meal, a musical presentation by the Symphonic Band, congregational singing, and testimonies of praise and thanksgiving from you.

Shakespeare once wrote…

To treat or not to treat that is the question. Well maybe it didn’t go exactly like that, but what’s important is that so far we’ve had fourteen families/classes/groups say that on October 31st they’ll be treating the families of our community to a little hospitality here at Hays Hill Baptist Church in the name of Jesus Christ.

On Wednesday, October 31st, we’ll be hosting Trunk or Treat here at HHBC from 6-8pm complete with games, jumpers, hot dogs, snow cones, and plenty of candy! All the activities are free corresponding to the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Currently we have 14 trunks committed to pass out candy to children and 8 games planned. I’d love to add to that number! If you would like to bring your trunk, decorate it, and pass out candy to children or run a children’s carnival type game or do both please email me via [email protected] so that I can reserve your spot and map out the event as best as possible. Trunk or Treat FAQ

Q1. What can I do to help? If you are available on the evening of the 31st you can bring your trunk and/or sponsor a game. If you’re not available that evening but would like to help there will be a box in the foyer this Sunday (October 28th) where we will be receiving candy donations to supply those who are bringing trunks and running games with plenty of goodies for the kids. Pray that God would give us good weather so that the event can be held outdoors as planned. Pray that God would send families our way who need to hear the gospel. Pray for those passing out candy and running games that they would “be wise in the way they treat outsiders, making the best use of the time. And their speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that they may know how they ought to answer each person” (Col. 4:5-6). Invite your friends, neighbors, coworkers. Q2. What do I do if I’m bringing a trunk or running a game? Ideally everyone will arrive around 5:30pm so that we can get you parked in your designated spot and your trunk/game setup before the public starts streaming in around 6pm. Our faithful cook crew will have dinner prepared (hot dogs, chips, drinks, etc.) for you and your family if you’d like a chance to eat before the event begins. Once the event begins we want you to greet everyone with a smile, pass out candy, and converse with the children and their families. If anyone would like more information about the church, would like focused prayer or has questions about faith in Christ you can point them to the table where the evangelism committee will be setup. Q3. What if it rains? We’ll be going ahead with the event but relocating inside Bldg. D. We’ll do our best to translate your trunk décor to tables and run as many of the games as possible.

Administration

Hi all.

The 2013 proposed budget and summary have been presented to the church and two forums have been held to answer questions. The reviews are positive and supportive. We will vote on the 2013 budget on Sunday morning November 11. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me. I will be happy to talk with you.

The new Web Site for Hays Hills Baptist Church has been launched. Check it out! I think you will like it. Hayshills.com. A special thank you to Emily Kimbro for her work on this special project.

The 5 Star Stewardship program sponsored by the Southern Baptists of Texas foundation will be introduced in both services on Sunday. The Budget committee and Pastor feel that this will be a great focus for our church. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this multi-year program which will highlight the missions and ministry efforts of our church! We have some new posts protecting our sidewalks leading to Bldg D from vehicular traffic. Special thanks to Ken Moore for his help with this project. Men, please mark your calendars for Saturday – November 10. We have several projects that need to be done around the church. If we have a good number of helpers, we can get them knocked out

quickly. This will follow the men’s breakfast that morning. Thanks in advance for your help! May God be glorified in all we do for Him! In His service,

Acts 12:16 (KJV)

16

But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and

saw him, they were astonished.

Ok, a little background on the above scripture in the Book of Acts. Peter had been arrested for

preaching about Jesus. A group of believers had gathered in the home of John Mark and were praying

for Peter’s release and safety. While they were praying, an angel appeared to Peter and together the

walked out of prison and Peter is now joining the prayer group. What’s wrong with this picture?

They are praying for Peter’s release and God answers their prayer. Why are they astonished????

Well before we get too critical of them we better take a very close look at ourselves. When we pray

do we really, I mean really, expect God to answer our prayer or do we just hope He will answer it.

Way too often I’m afraid it is the latter. Here is a very good example.

As we were preparing for the men’s work day on Saturday October 13th, we were praying that we

would have enough work to do and enough men to do it. Why is it then that I was surprised when

God showed us His Glory by sending just the right number of men with exactly the right skill sets to

accomplish all the work?

Now before any of you start thinking that I did a good job of planning and organizing the work day,

let me assure you that is far, far, really far from the truth. I didn’t have the slightest idea of how many

men would be there or what they were capable of doing. For the past three years God has been

faithful to provide every time we have a men’s work day, and every year I am surprised at how

everything works out just right. Oh Ye of little Faith!!!

In closing I want to say a special word of thanks to the following men who listened to the calling of

God’s Spirit and showed up to serve on Saturday morning.

Clay Dover and son Eli, James Reynolds, Brian Lester, Mitch Bordeno, Aaron Kahler, Carl Fraiser, Ken Rector, Jim Plant, Claude Green, Bill Taylor, Donny McDonald, Buddy Salas and son Gavin, and David Sweet.

Cooks for Breakfast: John Ambrose, Ernie West, and Billy Rose

Last comment, when you pray, pray with the expectation that God will answer your prayer. Maybe

not the way you expect it, but He will answer it.

Use it or lose it That could be said of the right to vote. (So be sure—Christian citizen—that you exercise your right to vote!) It could also be used of spiritual realities. Last Sunday I raised the issue of the Year of Jubilee in which God prescribed rest for the land and for the people every 50th year. It was not observed and so the people of God lost the benefits and privileges it promised. In Ezekiel 20, not keeping the Sabbath rest, resulted in the nation suffering an agonizing time with no rest.

COULD PRAYER BE LOST? I don’t know the mind of God, but it is true in Scripture that there were times that God warns that He will not hear prayers. Isaiah 59:2 is one and Ezekiel 20:2-3: “Then the word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Have you come to inquire of me? As surely as I live, I will not let you inquire of me, declares the Sovereign LORD.’”

The writers of the Old Testament did not take God’s hearing of their prayers for granted. They did not presume that He would always decide to hear or respond. (Go to blueletterbible.org and type in “hear” and see how many times the writers were concerned about God’s decision to hear their prayers.)

In the new covenant, we have a guarantee that He hears us since we bear His name. However, the Bible warns that the lessons from the old covenant do apply to us in the new covenant—to some extent, since the character of God does not change. “These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.” (1 Corinthians 10:11)

Could it be the effectiveness of prayer is affected by the faithfulness in prayer? (James 5 says so) Could we lose our voice with God by not using it? James 4:2 says “You have not because you ask not.” And Jesus taught that we should ask, seek and knock.

Let’s ENJOY WHAT WE HAVE AND NOT PRESUME THAT IT WILL ALWAYS BE THERE. Come to the Concert of Prayer Sunday night! And pray daily for great things for God’s people and for the gospel. If we pray only for limited things or personal things, then we may lose our ability to ask for the great things we should long for.
