WORD OF THE MAYORDear residents,
The heavy rains that fell on theLaurentians on June 12th and 13th causedheavy damage to private property as wellas municipal infrastructure; mainly ourroads. In our region, Gore (and Mille-Isles and Wentworth) was particularlyaffected because of its geologicalformation: as we are literally built onrock, the water runoff is facilitated, evenwhen the water hits an obstacle.Fortunately, we did not have more seriousconsequences.
We obviously wish we could providematerial and financial assistance to thosewhose properties were damaged.Unfortunately, neither the law nor ourfinancial capacity allows us to do so,because it is a case of "force majeure" forwhich the municipality is not responsible. On Monday, June 16th, we inquired withthe Quebec government to determine ifthere are programs to assist residentswhen such disasters happen. The Ministryof Public Safety offers a financial aidprogram for real and eminent disasters. I would ask all taxpayers affected bythese rains to send their contactinformation to the municipality; we willforward them ourselves to the Ministrywith our request for a specific financialassistance program.
I suggest you also consult your insurancecompany as soon as possible to determineif you are covered for such damage.
These violent storms have damaged ourmunicipal road network, while too often, ditches, gutters and culverts were notenough to deal with the downpour, causing severe cases of deterioration ofroads and culverts. As these phenomenaseem to reproduce at an accelerated pace,it goes without saying that this willdrastically change our priorities when itcomes to roads. We will need to ensurethat the ditches are all able to cope withsuch storms and that culverts have anadequate water discharge capacity. Good
drainage requires reshaping ditches, blasting rock and redoing road beds insome places. This work represents asignificant investment. This program willtake priority over our municipal roads’paving projects: it is useless to pave aroad that can be destroyed in the firststorm!
In collaboration with our member of theNational Assembly, Mr. Yves St-Denis,we will of course apply for financialassistance to update our municipalinfrastructure.
I also want to thank our emergencyteams; the roads’ department and the firedepartment for their efforts in keeping ussafe. As usual, you can send me yourcomments, suggestions or questions byemail at [email protected] orcall me at 514 941-2224. I will be happyto answer you. Thank you.
Your Mayor,Scott Pearce
