Notes from a letter by Janet Anderson. Meredith is a long shot but I do believe he ties in the family somewhere. He appears mostly in the records of Spotsylvania County, VA and later Goochland County, VA and then I lose him. He married Catherine Ammon and had at least, Lawrence, Rhonda and Lucy Anderson.…^Thomas Anderson – b. ca. 1766/1771, Cumberland Co., VA – md Mary…#M. Jesse Anderson – b. ca. 1751, Cumberland Co., VA – d. ca. 1815 md ca. 1771/7, Mary Holland – (sister of Anna Holland – w/o John Anderson) - d/o Mary (Meador) & James Holland Little is known of Jesse and his family even though he spent most, if not all of his adult years in Cumberland, VA. He married about 1777 when he bought his first land of 200 acres from Joseph Calland. …John Anderson – John grew up and disappeared, information not known. …William Anderson – Was blind and never married. …Lucy Anderson – Lucy married three times and had children by two men. *Note: Marriage Records 1749 – 1840, Cumberland Co., VA, pg.10. Jesse Anderson and Mary his wife, both of Cumberland Co., VA sell to John Anderson for $300.00 all right and claim of Jesse Anderson and Mary Anderson as legatees to the estate of James Holland, deceased, late of Cumberland County, after the death of Mary Holland, widow of James Holland, who lives on the land and has a life right in the said land.

Lawrence was probably the oldest of the Anderson brothers because he appears to have received the biggest share of the 400 acres.

It would appear that when he wrote his will in February of 1781 he was “sound of body and mind” yet three months later in May he was dead, probably about 35 years old. From the tone of the will I would suspect he either went off to war, knew someone was gunning for him, or there was a sickness about and he was afraid he might catch it. Anyway, apparently when he wrote his will he was fearful for his life. Rhonda his wife never married but raised her children and did some fine property wheeling and dealing. She was able at her own death in 1833 to leave her children not only their share of their grandfather’s estate, but some other prime land. Her daughter Nancy never married; Fanny married her cousin John Anderson, son of William and Catherine(Shirley) Anderson, and Lawrence died shortly after his mother. * See Will of Lawrence Anderson – Will Book 2, pg. 272. …Lawrence Anderson – md Elizabeth Meador –

George had at his death an estate worth over $2,700 which included 8 slaves but most of them were children. involved in a poker game one night and one of the player at the table got mad at him. They had a argument and each left their separate ways. The next day the man attacked Houston on the street with a knife. They fought each other and Houston ended up shooting the man. He died. His brother was in the county jail and heard about his brother being killed by Houston. He said “I’m gonna kill Houston when I get out of here. When he got out of jail he went looking for Houston. Houston was riding his horse down the street, unaware of the lurking danger. Sidney S. Stanton. In April 1862 Riley’s first cousinPrettyman Jones became commander of Co. F. At the Battle of Fishing Creek,KY on 19 January Riley was wounded. On 4 July 1863 at Cumberland Mountain,TN he deserted. After the war he purchased a farm near Boma, TN, and livedthere until his death.After the Battle of Fishing Creek, Puliski Co., KY Prettyman Jones became theCompany Commander of F company. His brother, Wade, was made First Sgt.Prettyman and Wade and several others left the confederate army, and laterjoined the Union Army. Riley did not join the Union Army, but his brotherThomas A. Anderson did. The Jones family opposed slavery and supported theUnion. Starting in 1862 large numbers of confederate soldiers started deserting.One of reasons was the plantation class had sold them on the idea that theywould take care of their families and they never did. Another reason is whensoldiers got into camp they saw sons of plantation owners come to camp inbuggies with wagons and personal slaves and getting the best leadershippositions. In the fallof 1885 there was a flux epidemic in Mine Lick Creek area of Putnam Co.that took the lives of the young girls & Riley Anderson.Later the graves were moved to Smellage Cemetery, Boma, TN. Riley’sremains stayed buried on the farm, only his tombstone was movedto Smellage Cemetery.
