the right role for you >>>Individuals work on small virtual teams (1-5 people) to build out a single data warehouse and state of the art analytics platform. At Con-way Freight, BI unlocks new insights every day.

Team members expect each other to continuously improve both their own skills and the team’s capabilities. We have a simple process to make sure individuals get the time and resources to support this goal.

>>> connect today! We’re always hiring great people.

To view and apply for specific openings, search for “BI” on our jobs site

or send us an email.

about our hiring process >>> Are you excited about Business Intelligence? Can you model data, write ETLs, analyze data, or build maps? We want to hear from you.The first step is for you to get in touch with us. We're happy to talk about what we do and where you might fit. Our best team members have come from all types of backgrounds and didn't always wait for a position to apply for.

Our interviewing process goes roughly like this:

1. We’ll get on the phone and talk to you about Con-way, our team, and what our work looks like. At the end of this call, you should have a good idea of what we do, how our hiring process goes, and where you might fit in.

2. We’ll do 1-3 technical phone screens. If you’re local, we’ll have you stop by in person. You’ll speak with senior team members who will ask about your technical background and talk you through scenarios and use cases from our day to day work. If you've been doing BI for awhile, you’ll get a chance to talk about your past projects; if you’re a developer, we’ll be interested in hearing about your approach and about your code.

3. If things seem like a fit so far, then we’ll have you visit the team in person for a group interview focusing on your experience and style. We may throw you a case study problem to give you a feel for the type of challenges we run into everyday.

4. We’ve talked, we’ve answered questions, and we’ve learned about what each of us wants in this job. By now we should have a pretty good idea of whether we’ll be happy working with each other. If things are a fit, then we’ll work with you through the final few steps to bring you onto our team.

questions ??? 1. How long does this take? We work hard to minimize the amount of time we demand from candidates,

but we also strive to make sure opportunities are the best fit possible for everyone. We’ll be as transparent as possible about where you are in the process, and it’s generally possible to wrap things up inside a few weeks.

2. Is there a list of current openings? You can check our jobs site by visitinghttp://con-way.referrals.selectminds.com/ and searching for “BI”. If you don't see something you want, then email us. We’re always hiring :)

3. How much industry experience do I need to join Con-way BI? Although some job openings list specific experience requirements, we consider candidates with all levels of experience, and we’ll work to align available positions accordingly. We’re almost always hiring both junior and senior team members.

4. Do I need to know ERwin, Informatica, Netezza, or MicroStrategy? These are our teams’ core platforms, but it’s not mandatory for a candidate to be fluent with the one(s) associated with a particular job opportunity. Platform experience (and good habits) may give you a leg up, but we’re really more interested in how you think and whether you like to learn. If you don’t know something, we’ll have resources ready to help you pick it up. Actually no one arrives knowing everything, so you’ll need to expect drink from at least a few firehoses when you first come on board.

5. Can I work remotely? We’d love to find a way to work with you, and we’d still like to talk with you. However, the majority of our positions do require team members to work from one of our offices. We are happy to relocate candidates.

6. Do you do internships? Yes! Although they may not be posted on our jobs site, we consider paid internships year round for BI-focused candidates both with experience and without. Interns work alongside other team members, but due to time limitations, their roles may have easier learning curves and special focus on well-scoped development or research projects. Like all roles, our internships are in Portland, OR, and Ann Arbor, MI.

want more? >>> here are at least ten great reasons to join Con-way BI:

1. Business Commitment2. Strategic Importance3. Strong Team4. Empowered Individuals5. Learning & Growth6. Advanced Technology7. Technical Excellence8. Maximum Performance9. Recognized Success

10. Vision & Leadership

1Business CommitmentCon-way Freight’s BI organization is fully supported by all members of the leadership team, and we’re actively engaged with all functions of the company.

The biggest reason for success or failure of any Data Warehouse or Business Intelligence program is the top level business executive support and adoption, so we keep our partnership strong.

2Strategic ImportanceEvery strategic project that the company pursues includes BI as a key input, key output, or both.

BI team members work directly with our business teams on hundreds of new projects every year—identifying new opportunities, delivering results, and maintaining value.

High quality data and strong analytics are recognized as key drivers for the success of all company initiatives and processes.

3Strong TeamOur BI team has over 50 members, and it’s one of the fastest-growing parts of the company.

We have a single BI organization with teams in Portland, OR and Ann Arbor, MI, who focus on Data Warehousing, Business Analytics, GIS, and Data Management.

We seek out and hire only the best and brightest in the field because we believe the most rewarding teams to work on are filled with individuals who complement and stimulate each others’ expertise and potential.

4Empowered IndividualsA flat org structure gives team members the independence and opportunity to chart new courses for BI both within the company and in the industry at large. If you can dream it, you’re able to do it.

Team members expect one another to continually seek out and lead new ways to improve the group, its processes and patterns, and each others’ individual jobs. Everyone in BI is a change agent.

5Learning & GrowthThere are constantly new things to learn and explore in BI, and sometimes we invest faster than we can keep up (but we think that’s a good challenge :).

To make sure we maximize BI’s potential at Con-way, we place special emphasis on training and skill development via every avenue available, including formal learning, peer mentoring, and on the job experience.

6Advanced TechnologyWe use leading edge BI and Data Warehouse technology, and we always keep it fresh. Our current core stack consists of Netezza, Informatica, Erwin, Microstrategy, and Esri.

We don't stay satisfied for long, though, and we constantly evaluate and integrate new platforms and technology.

Our partnerships with business leadership enable us to maintain the resources and support needed to keep up with—and drive—the state of the art.

7Technical ExcellenceBy leveraging best in class tools, patterns, and methodologies, we’re able to optimize BI investments and achieve high levels of consistency and quality.

Our data warehousing team has a very mature data modeling practice, which is rare in groups as large as ours, and our analytics team regularly develops new approaches to delivering insights that can be repeated, scaled out, and supported easily.

8Maximum PerformanceOur architecture and patterns are geared towards a very high performance implementation. We adopt and develop unique approaches to leverage the power of MPP databases and other new technology that can't be fully exploited by traditional approaches like dimensional modeling.

We enjoy pushing the limits, breaking technology, and working with our vendor partners to make the impossible possible.

9Recognized SuccessIn recent years we've received multiple TDWI BI Best Practices awards and Informatica and MicroStrategy customer innovation awards.

Our team members frequently present on our successes and innovations at ERwin ERworld, MicroStrategy World, Esri UC, DAMA, and the ATA ITLC.

Within Con-way, BI team members receive company-wide recognition every quarter for their contributions and leadership.

10Vision & LeadershipOur BI management team is passionate about business intelligence, data warehousing, and analytics.

The team’s focus is not only on succeeding with what we're doing today and what we will do tomorrow, but also on charting the course for how we'll continue to set the standard for Enterprise BI for years to come.

This translates to unmatched commitment to BI team members, tremendous support and partnership with our sponsors, and continuity and momentum for BI success.
