WHY ARE WE HERE?

• It is our goal to ensure a positive educational athletics experience for all participants: student athletes, parents, staff, officials and spectators.

• In order to achieve that goal, we need everyone involved to understand the expectations and commit to supporting the athletic program at CPHS.

OUR VISION

We are concerned with the physical, social, emotional and educational development of

young people through athletics. We feel that a properly controlled, well-organized athletic program meets the students’ needs for self-expression, mental alertness, and physical

growth. It is our hope to maintain a program that is sound in purpose and that will enhance

our students’ educational experience.

OUR VISION

As a parent of a student-athlete, we expect that you will understand and support the policies set forth in the

Comstock Park Athletics Handbook and all policies established for students at Comstock Park Public

Schools.

As an adult member of this community, you are a role model for our students. Students will emulate your behavior. It is,

therefore, very important that you lead by positive example. We expect parents to display good sportsmanship at all

times and to adhere to program, school, conference, and state guidelines at all events.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The mission of the Comstock Park Athletic Program is to nurture student athletes through their high school years to:

1. Develop a positive mental attitude and a strong sense of self.

2. Establish and enhance life skills necessary to be successful and productive in the adult world.

3. Encourage participation, fair play, good sportsmanship and teamwork.

4. Promote a healthy, physically fit individual.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

To provide a quality program and experience for our student-athletes, we must have a team approach - THE TRIANGLE OF SUCCESS:

We are most likely to be successful when everyone involved knows their role, embraces their role and works as hard as possible to fulfill their role!

PARENT/COACH RELATIONS

*Athletes should be encouraged to address issues and/or concerns directly with their coach. The high

school years are a period of developing maturity and independence. We want to teach our student-athletes to take responsibility for their own life situations. As

your son or daughter becomes involved in the athletic programs at Comstock Park, they will experience some

of the most rewarding moments of their lives. It is important to understand that there also may be times when things do not go the way you or your student-athlete wishes. Athletes are encouraged to discuss concerns with their coach especially at these times.

9

Page 10: COMSTOCK PARK ATHLETICS 2015-16 Winter Parent Meeting

PARENT/COACH RELATIONS

Procedure for resolving concerns:

1. The athlete should address the concern with the coach.

2. If the concern is unresolved, the parent should address the concern with the coach.

3. If the concern is still unresolved, the athlete and parent should request a conference with the

administration.

4. The administration will not, in most cases, hear grievances in the absence of either party.

PARENT/COACH RELATIONS

If you have a concern to discuss with a coach, you should follow this procedure:

• Call the coach to set up an appointment. Never approach a coach before or after practice or a game to discuss a concern. These can be emotional times for both parent and coach. Meetings of this nature do not promote resolution.

• If the coach cannot be reached, contact the Administration and the meeting will be set up for you.

• Plan to discuss appropriate concerns only. Coaches are instructed that they should not discuss those issues listed on the previous slide.

SPORTSMANSHIP

You can help us establish an outstanding reputation for good sportsmanship.

We must all work hard in conducting ourselves in a commendable manner.

A display of unsportsmanlike conduct can result in sanctions against the offending school, team, or

athlete.

Always observe the following guidelines for good sportsmanship:

14

Page 15: COMSTOCK PARK ATHLETICS 2015-16 Winter Parent Meeting

SPORTSMANSHIP

1. The good name of our school is more important than any contest won or lost by fair or unfair play.

2. Accept decisions of officials without dispute (especially if you have not read the current rule book). Officials are seldom responsible for our success, so do not blame them for our failures.

3. Recognize and show appreciation for the performance of your opponent.

4. Be proud of our school’s reputation and work hard to protect it.

5. Remember, as a member of our athletic program you represent more than yourself. Never conduct yourself in way that brings discredit to the Comstock Park Athletic Program.

15

Page 16: COMSTOCK PARK ATHLETICS 2015-16 Winter Parent Meeting

SPORTSMANSHIP

As adults, we are role models – student will see what we do as acceptable and they are likely to engage in the same

behaviors.

It isn’t easy to find officials or coaches!!

If you are interested in either role, please contact Tony Petkus.

• Changes to MHSAA Concussion Policy:“Any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion

(such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion, or balance problems) shall be immediately removed from the contest and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health care professional.”

• CHANGES INCLUDE:✕ 3b. Only an M.D., D.O., Physician’s Assistant or Nurse

✕ 3d. Individual schools, districts, and leagues may have more stringent requirements and protocols including but not limited to mandatory periods of inactivity, screening and post-concussion testing prior to the written clearance for return to activity.

BASELINE TESTING WITH IMPACT

• ImPACT (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) software is intended for use as a computer-based neurocognitive assessment tool.

• Indicated for use and interpretation by trained or qualified healthcare professionals.

• Does not provide treatment recommendations or medical diagnosis with respect to any particular individual.

• Recommended use of the ImPACT is as a compliment to other information known about the test taker to help guide the medical professional to make a data based decision regarding progress and return to daily activity.

• Baseline testing is conducted at the beginning of each season in order to have a starting point to compare to in case a head injury/concussion occurs. Each year, incoming freshman and juniors are tested to keep the baseline tests current.

Page 25: COMSTOCK PARK ATHLETICS 2015-16 Winter Parent Meeting

MEDICAL RELEASE FORMS

• ATHLETIC HANDBOOK“The Comstock Park athletic department requires all student-athlete illness or injury issues be communicated directly to the athletic trainer on staff to ensure appropriate management and documentation. This includes injuries/illnesses that are directly related to athletic participation, any condition that may affect participation status within school activities, and those that occur outside of organized school activities.

All injuries/illnesses that are treated by a physician for any reason require the athlete or parent/guardian of the athlete produce documentation from their physician regarding injury status, return to play guidelines, and clearance before returning to their sport.

The athletic trainer is empowered by the Comstock Park athletic department to determine participation status until sufficient documentation is produced, or, in the event the health, safety, and well-being of the student-athlete may be compromised.”
