This may also berelevant to David Robinson's and CordonHolmes' pages (Under Deve|opment andCybercop, 5hopper 330) and to one of thepromotions advertised for this issue:'Unleash your router with DD-WRT'.Ny ADSL router was hacked. The |Paddress was changed from its 'Fixed'seuing to 'Dynamic', and the router'sDNS lookup addresses changed from the|SP's defaults (with which | have neverhad any problems) to a pair of 'foreign'ones. These turned out to be hosted by ahrm in Bulgaria owned by a companyregistered in Belize with a user accountowned by a person in Khartoum - at least,that's what WHO|S said. None of thesemight be real, of course.The ehect was a redirection of all weblookups to a rogue site. All page clicksresulted in a number of adverts in front of(popups) or behind (pop-unders) thewanted web page, which did usuallyeventually appear aher closing all theunwanted windows.The process was clearly unwanted|avaScript added to the wanted page,because disabling |avaScript stopped it.Right-clicking to a new tab also avoided theproblem - mostly. |t seems that the extra|avaScript was only set to respond to'ordinary' clicks. However, many sites workby |avaScript these days and that isn't apractical option for my family.|t took me a couple of days to discoverthe cause. | tried hve or six Windowsmachines (including one that hadn't beenupdated for a year or so to see if a recentdownload was responsible), two Linuxmachines and two Android tablets usingFirefox and Chrome on all machines andsome other Linux browsers. All were thesame, so that really ruled out viruses ormalware. | hrst suspected my |SP's server,but very quickly discovered that wasn't theproblem. Using a substitute old router curedthe problem, except for short-lived DNScache issues, which were easily overcome('ipconhg /ushdns' in Windows.)Aher much internet searching, | nowknow that this form of hacking is notuncommon.
